RE: Gabriel Giancaspro, Ph.D., Candidate for OMB Membership

I am writing in support of Dr. Giancaspro’s application for membership to the AOAC Official Methods Board (OMB). I have worked with Dr. Giancaspro in dietary supplements and herbal medicines (DSHM) standards at the United States Pharmacopoeial Convention (USP) and have seen firsthand how USP’s progress and success there has occurred under his expert guidance. Not only has Dr. Giancaspro overseen USP’s engagement in DSHM, but in my view he is directly responsible for the organization having made meaningful strides there due to his command of the subject matter, recognition of organizational requirements, and a calm measured manner in dealing with differing points of view. Dr. Giancaspro understands the science and technical aspects of complex DSHMs as well as organizational structure. He consistently advances original ideas, clarifies complex situations, and effectively leads volunteer efforts. The identical 501(c)(3) categorizations of AOAC and USP, including a reliance on volunteers, provide additional assurance of Dr. Giancaspro’s promise as an effective OMB member. He has also been engaged with the Stakeholder Panel on Dietary Supplements (SPDS) and the Editorial Board that I chaired at AOAC, consistently showing up and participating. I have also witnessed his active work with other DSHM stakeholder organizations, such as the NSF-ANSI Joint Committee and the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA). This relevant experience should be well received by the OMB. You have my strongest recommendation for Dr. Giancaspro for membership to the AOAC OMB. I am confident that he will prove to be an extremely valuable asset to the OMB both professionally and personally.
