Советский модернизм

Sanatorium “Druzhba” (Friendship), Yalta, Ukraine, 1985 . This structure seems to be more complicated than the space shuttle. In spring 1985, I was invited by its architect to stay at “Druzhba” for three days. What is there to say? It cannot be described in words alone, without plans and sections. Simply to say “the outer ring with residential quarters rises in tiers facing the sea, while the central multilevel space contains the conference hall and swimming pool” seems insufficient. This ex- perimental building incorporates so many novelties that it should be ranked in the architectural fantasy genre. And the Friendship is perhaps the only example in all of Soviet architecture that represents this. F. Novikov architects – I. Vasilevsky, Y. Stefanchuk, V. Divnov, L. Kesler, engineers –   N.
