but rather rolling their sleeves up and taking care of business. It has been very difficult for clubs to stay positive and look at the glass half full when most of them had just finished up or in some cases were still working on reconstructing trails that were devastated from storms earlier this year. We all saw many areas within the State that had seen total devastation to the trail system, one of which was the Western mountains and surrounding region.I mention this because I witnessed firsthand clubs come together. On December 28th an outdoor recreational conservation group from the Farmington area, along with several prominent area club members quickly put together an emergency meeting to discuss immediate club issues and to form a plan of direction to rebuild their trail system. This meeting brought to a small town hall in Strong, Maine close to 100 people, 20 plus clubs, members from the Maine Legislatures, the Dept. of ACF, and several members of the MSA including our MSA state house lobbyist. I witnessed 20 clubs come together, share each one’s issues facing them, offer up materials, machinery and labor to one another. I saw our legislators that night vow to do everything in their power to get more money back in the hands of the clubs. I can tell you for certain that the Snowmobile Division of the Dept. of ACF is pulling all strings to try and do the same. The MSA has put a letter on the Governor’s desk pleading the case for the clubs and getting our place in the front of the line, should there be any disaster relief money. Our lobbyist is trying hard to set up the MSA for a face to face with the governor; our hope is that by the time you are reading this it will On the positive side of the MSA, the Super Raffle prizes were all delivered and Liz mailed out the gift certificates. Many happy folks, its a great feeling seeing their faces light up with joy. The club’s once again came through selling a great amount of tickets. The Western Region Fryeburg Area Snowmobile Association #came in first place selling the most tickets. Also, in the Western Region The Pleasant Mountain SC came in second and the Bouncing Bogies came in third! The Northern Region: Washburn Trail Runner’s #1 Caribou #2 and The Easton Trailbreakers #3 The Eastern Region was lead by the Wassookeag Sc 2nd Were the Moosehead Riders SC and #3 Quad County Central Region Lexington Highlanders came in 1st Anson North Anson was second and Town and Country SC was 3rd Coastal: Southern Maine Sno-Goers came in first, Ossipee Mountaineers was second and a tie for 3rd Moonlite Snow Skimmers and The Saco Pathriders. Thanks to every club who made this another successful super raffle. to be brought in front of the 2025 ses sion to better finance our clubs trail maintenance & equipment funding. In late December, we met and put together a letter to the Governor, Com missioners & legislators in a plea for funding and support for our clubs after the devastating storm Dec 17 th & 18 th . This fast-forwarded a planned conver sation with them and have heard back preliminary statements from them as of the time of my writing this article. The committee has had three virtual meetings and one in person meeting since beginning. An e-mail blast has been sent out to clubs asking for ideas. We need all your help to get ideas from folks who are in the trenches working everyday to keep the clubs going. We have gathered information from neighboring provinces & states. We have received information from Joe at the Snowmobile Program office on past years reported club expenses, grant payouts & registration numbers. know it’s hard to be patient but that’s what he suggested he’s a professional with these situations so I take his comments and wisdom with great respect.
have happened. Everyone that night walked into that room with their heads held high, it was a positive and constructive meeting and I can say that I was proud to be in the room. I know that a lot of you may be thinking that we are fighting an uphill battle and that with time we will fall on the back burner but I would disagree with that. We need to keep fighting and keep letting our voices be heard. Snowmobiling is one of the biggest recreational industries in the State of Maine and a huge asset to its economy and is respected for it. My hope moving forward is that there are more meetings like this one in other affected areas; if our sport is going to continue to thrive, we are all going to have to work together with our neighbors and use each other’s resources. Positive things that I have seen come out of this is the amount of support from Joe Snowmobiler that might not have helped ordinarily. By and large clubs have used social media to share to the snowmobiling community what they are dealing with in terms of the amount of devastation and work that needs to happen before any of us can ride. The thousands of pictures that I have seen on social media has to pull on the heart strings of everyone and how can anyone with a clear conscience not help in some way, sit back, not be a part of the solution and expect to ride the trails once the work is done and the trails are flat! As always, if anyone would like to talk about anything snowmobile related or would like me to attend an event or meeting, please reach out to me, my door is always open! Thank You, Mark We have a great team but the success of a great team is that we have to stick together. I’ve been around long enough now to see what happens when folks go out on their own. Unfortunately, they fail. Communication and being transparent is vital to be successful, we have been. I will do whatever it takes to make sure the MSA clubs get what is coming to them. We work hard to protect the club’s with a new Lobbyist to keep us informed what of what is happening in Augusta. We have lots of respect from the IF&W folks that work with us and protect are well-being. Please let me know how I/we can help. I know it’s a challenge with new landowners and folks with new ideas but we will succeed. You made snowmobiling in Maine the third best destination point in the USA! The whole state not just a little corner of it, you did it! We have the best supporting business, the best landowners and the best volunteers! Hopefully this month the weather will change, we have lots of events coming up. Hang in there! AL Sifting through the data to make sure we completely understand it will take some time. There is a lot of data to work though & understand! We still need ideas from our mem bership so we can begin to sort them into categories to deep dive into how they could/would work. Work through your club at the next meeting to have this as an agenda topic then get your ideas to us. H ello everyone, I am hoping that you all had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year! With that being said, I know that most of us did not get a whole lot of seat time on our sleds but instead found other activities to occupy our time, most of which were not expected. This holiday season Mother Nature threw us a curveball and instead of setting out to find that first ride of the year most of you headed out to look for blow downs, washed out bridges and missing culverts, not exactly what we had in mind but that was our reality for most. As this all unfolded I was reminded what a resilient, resourceful and passionate group Snowmobilers really are when facing diversity, not throwing their hands up in the air

to cross their property. My priorities are 100% MSA club support. If a club is all MSA I’ll be backing you all the way. If you’re not all MSA then you’re at the bottom of the list. Executive Vice-President: Mark Chinnock There are a lot of clubs tonight. It’s great. Nice job everybody. All the clubs have worked your tails off all month. Northern Region Vice-President: Matt Stedmen - Don’t want to spend a lot of time talking, had snow and then rain. We’ve been out putting up signs and working on getting the trails up and going. Hope to see a lot of you throughout the winter. Western Region Vice-President: Jerry Major: January 16 th meeting at the Norway Fire Station, on Danforth Street. Turkey potpie. 5 PM social, 6 PM dinner, 7 PM meeting! Central Region Vice-President: Jack Lord: Bingham is not all set. I apologize for misinformation. The railroad issue has not been solved. But the club has landowner permission from EVERY landowner for us to use. STACKS of permissions. ITS87 goes around the town, if you go straight you’ll go through town and then back to 87. Coastal Region Vice-President: Dave Watson: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!! Glad you’re all here. We had rain, and then washed away all our snow. Let’s get dancing again!! Eastern Region Vice-President: Eileen Lafland: Same as everyone. Most trails are 4 to 18 inches under water. Everyone is working hard hoping it gets cold fast or we’ll need pontoons! Executive Vice-President: Mark Chinnock: It’s good to see a lot of clubs posting pictures of young people working in the clubs. Safety Al Swett - When he goes to schools, he takes the displays and promotes safety. Helped IF&W with their safety course. ern and central regions were hit particularly hard. Entire bridges gone and severe washouts in many areas. Southern, northern, and east ern regions faired much better but still had to deal with downed trees, a few bridge resets, and culverts here and there. Clubs were out even though the Christmas holiday weekend to access and clear trails. Riders from out of state have offered heavy equipment, materials, and manpower to repair the worst destruction and most poorly timed event we have seen in a very long time. We have had some ice storms in recent memory but nothing like this. The efforts made by our loyal dedicated volunteers to reconnect our system has been nothing short of amazing! They have rallied to overcome like they always do! THANK YOU ALL! Despite all the time and effort spent, riders should expect detours this season where bridges cannot be replaced or major washouts cannot be repaired in time. Be vig ilant of signage and check locally when plan ning a trip. You may not be able to navigate your desired route. All for Now……… Brent
They want to get more involved with safety checks. The ice is NOT safe yet, two went in and one came out. DO NOT GO ON THE ICE YET!!! Membership Report: Eileen Lafland: I’m not going to give you totals tonight, but over the last week over 1,000 memberships have been entered into the system. The totals will come next month. Trail Committee Chair: Brent Spalding - Most of the regional meetings are done, going to meet tomorrow afternoon with Joe to revamp the inspection worksheet for points towards the signage. Funding: Matt Stedmen: still in the solicitation stage reaching out to clubs and members for feedback ideas for what to do to close the funding gap. So that we can fund you to 70% like the grants say we’ll do. We have 30-40 ideas right now. It would be nice to get an idea from at least half the clubs. Hopefully in January and February we will start looking at some of the ideas and working on some of them. Really wants more ideas. Steering Committee Chairman: John Monk - two things, abandoned and discontinued roads on the 6th. Usually go to the town to ask permission, GO TO THE LANDOWNERS. Make friends with the landowners. Going to try to get snowmobiles and atvs to get unfettered access to abandoned roads. Going to start looking for an executive director again. We would like to know what you thinking the responsibilities of an executive director should do. Hospitality - Gail Ryan - would like to know who has her last snowball! Read a joke. Chris Gamauch from Polaris Ride Command - If your club wants to get involved there are pamphlets on the back table. His job is to correct the trailmaps. Thanks for letting me come up. If there are ANY issues with the
trails and Ride Command please let me know so I can fix it. Scholarship Committee: Harvey Chesley - Barry Ryan stood in for Harvey. Good meal tonight. We are doing very well. There is an article in the December paper. Eileen and Lori did a great job. Hall of Fame Chair: Aleta Rioux no report. Old Business: Didn’t bring the sleds down because of all the rain. We purchased a new desk and good chair for the Office Manager, Brent has a new projector, Pine Tree camp ride in on February 2 nd . Anyone that wants to can come along. New Business: Mark Chinnock fixed the drum for the raffle. Off trail Riding - can we have a warden come in to explain the penalties to us? Pot of Gold - Big Valley Sno-Club, Island Falls PRESENT. Will have a $400. Check mailed. 50/50 Raffle-Mike Sikorski $275. SUPER RAFFLE TICKET Sales Lucky Dog - competition between the top three clubs in each region Central Region - Lexington Highlanders-$1,369, Anson-North Anson- $983, Town and Country Trail Riders-$753. Meeting adjourned 7:50 safe on the trails to the High School and Mid dle School kids. We are planning now with the Greenville and Rangeley Schools. It’s a good time to visit with the students. IF&W has been teaching courses for both ATV’s and Snowmo biles. It is an all-day activity and at the end of the day, the kids and parents earn a certificate. Look for upcoming dates on their website I try to get to them when time is available. We have new Safety signs made of water proof material that were donated by Ham mond Lumber. Their generosity saved us lots of money, which is much appreciated. BIW will also be making new signs for us similar to what we gave out a while ago. Supporting business that make it happen! I will be bring these signs to the upcoming directors meetings and other events. Let me know if you would like some. With all the destruction of the trials, it is important to be safe out there. Wear your PPE to protect your eyes, hands, feet, hearing and other body parts. Watch out for the other guy. Be careful under foot. It’s going to freeze up soon, be careful of black ice. Speaking of ice. The lakes and ponds are not safe. We have not had enough cold weather for a freeze up. Wear the right gear when you ride new material make you very comfortable while rid ing layering is a must tops and bottoms, mid layers, windproof waterproof outer layers, a good pair of gloves and boots along with a good helmet will make your trip an enjoyable one. Safety necessities: most important a flash light, fire starter, spare batteries, extra sled key, spare belt, extra gas, small shovel and saw. How about a spare quart of oil? Hand warmers, tow strap, Leatherman, spare food and water, duct tape, a trip can start on a blue sky day but end in a snowstorm, be ready for the changing weather. Be safe out there AL

S ecretary’s report accepted as corrected M/S/C. The treasurer’s report was read and placed on file at the office. President’s opening comments: MSA is 55 years strong with the same mission as when it started. Club members throughout Maine work locally, regionally and at the state level to promote snowmobiling in Maine as a safe, fun, family oriented winter sport. Over 2,100 businesses support the trails effort through their membership. Members of local clubs accept responsibility for trail clearing, bridge building, maintenance, signing and grooming that help to keep the Maine trail system open. One of the clubs’ most important duties is obtaining landowner permission for access, and maintaining contact with the generous people who allow snowmobile trails

All the preseason work trail crews did before this last storm seems to be gone in most of the state. The devastation around the state is tremendous. Large bridges washed away or destroyed, trails under water, trees down every where and so much more. Clubs work so hard to make the trails safe and hen hope for snow. At this point in a season that could begin soon, clubs are not sure what they can do to open some trails backup. There are sure to be “Trail Closed” signs in areas where you may ride, so please, please be careful and obey the signs. If you see people out there trying to get trails open, STOP and give them a hand. Better yet, contact your local club and offer your help. It is usually just a handful of club trail crew people that do the work and they are tired! ALL CLUBS can use all the help they can get. Instead of asking, “When are the trails going to be open?” why not ask, “What can I do to help?” Even if it is just a few hours many hands make the work go faster. January and Early February mean clubs are holding events across the state. Ride-Ins, cook outs, groomer rodeos, club suppers are just some ways for clubs to raise money or show case themselves. Check out the calendars, Facebook pages and other social media sites, then plan to attend. You will meet some great people and have a chance to thank them for all they do and who knows, you may find another club to join! That’s all for now. Please remember to ride safe and watch for the trail changes. Until February, let’s hope the winds and rain are gone and Mother Nature has decided to give us cold, cold weather and snow. Eileen and send them in to Joe Higgins. The sooner the state has this information the better, they can then send it to the Feds and then they can go through and decide what is needed to come from the feds to help cover this kind of damage. It is important that you get this information together as soon as possible and get it to Joe. The weather being what it is, who knows what kind of a winter we will have. However, I’m hoping it will be better than the last one. We are due a good one. But before we can enjoy one we will have to clean up MOTHER NATURE’S MESS and looking around she has left us with heavy and sometimes dangerous work to do. Just make sure when you go out, Take someone with you and someone at home or at the club has your plan for the day. Remember you don’t do all this work for everybody else go often and enjoy your work. Pray for more snow and less rain. Stay Safe, Keep Smiling and call me if I can help you home 207-672-3951 cell 207-717-7131. Jack 2 024 a new year.... Our season is off to a very slow start. Warm temperatures, incredible rain, damage to trails, bridges across the state destroyed. I’m still doing the snow dance. Asking Old man winter and Mother Nature to give us our season. Of course, we write these articles a couple weeks before they are published. It is my hope we can be riding. The one thing that does not change is. All the clubs. All the volunteers, all the contractors who donate their time, their equipment, are still the best in the world. I personally want to thank all of you for the work, the pride you put into making MAINE “the best in the East”. Without your dedication to our sport, we might not have a season this year. THANK YOU!!! I hope to be on trails soon, ride right, and ride safe. Dave

watch the signage, as some intersections and stretches of trail won’t be where they were last season. The digital or paper map you are using may not be up to date so please follow signs. These re-routes are very time consuming and can be expensive. Kudos to all those involved (club volunteers, landowners & contractors/ equipment operators), making sure the trail system stays connected for the thousands of riders who frequent the County. Please heed signage along the trails, the club members who install & maintain them put them up for a reason, to direct you or share information with you. This is especially true of “Caution plowed road/logging”. Clubs gather information from landowners on where they can be, where landowners do not want us and following that signage make the difference of keeping that trail open. Where snowmobilers interact with logging & trucking operations the landowner & clubs have worked together to allow us to continue access through the active job. WE MUST BE RESPECTFUL of the workers there. We (snowmobilers) are out having fun, recreating, but those folks are working. We must follow signage, wait for operators to motion us past, right slow & to the right, yield to vehicles, etc. If we don’t, access could be lost not just for that section, but for other locations and years as well.Landowners often own more than one woodlot and if shared access doesn’t work in one location, they are likely to say no the next time. You may see many new pieces of grooming equipment around the State this winter, as quite a few clubs have upgraded their power unit, drag or both. Make sure to give the folks running them a big thumbs up when you see them, and please help the clubs by joining &/ or dropping some cash in the trail maintenance jars at clubhouses and convenience stores or the QR code on their signs. The machines are very expensive, and cost of operations always exceed State grant funding. There are many events planned by clubs this winter, check out the calendar in the paper and follow club news where you ride or plan to vacation for information on these events so you can make them part of your winter. I personally love starting my ride days with a club breakfast. If you haven’t been to Northern Aroostook riding, plan to come up and join us for the Northern Region Showcase ride March 16th based out of Easton Snowmobile Club. If you have a question, problem, concern, or idea on snowmobiling in “The County”, get in touch with me. You can contact me at the phone # or email below. Matt Stedman there were over 90 in attendance and Dana did a fantastic job of keeping everything flowing in a timely manner. We heard from 15 clubs about their problems with the great flood of 2023. There was much discussion on how to help one another and share equipment and materials, all in all a very rewarding experience. It was good to see five game wardens there and five Maine legislators, expect more details in other columns. I introduced myself at the end as the NEW VP of the western region, and stressed how much we NEED clubs to be 100% affiliated with the MSA as we struggle to fight for more funds for them, we have to pay our bills and salaries also. Our lobbyist is working hard for us, and as you can imagine that gets expensive. Another plus from the meeting in Strong I asked for volunteers as directors and two men stepped forward and are interested in getting more involved, and a couple more clubs have contacted me with their club meeting dates and locations, still looking to hear from all the rest of the 62 clubs in the western region. Looking forward to seeing a big crowd at the MSA monthly meeting in Norway, (turkey potpie for supper, yum yum). Happy New Year to one and all, get out and do the SNOW DANCE, God Bless. Regards Jerry Major

Eileen Lafland, 207-843-7813 PO Box 733, Holden ME 04429 L.andE.lafland525476@gmail.com W elcome to 2024 Everyone!! Well, the week before Christmas in this state Mother Nature sure threw everything she could at us! Two to seven inches of rain, temperatures in the low 50’s and 60’s and the gale force winds reaching 70 mph gusts and then dropping temperatures and a wind chill reminded all Mainers she is still in charge. I am writing this on day three of no power at our house on Dec. 20th and no hope in sight yet for when it will be back. It feels like when I was a kid many, many years ago with no power, no phone, no cell phone service, and no internet! Thank goodness for a woodstove and a manual generator we can start for a couple hours and then turn off. I sure hope everyone remained safe, enjoyed time with their families over the holiday and that 2024 started much better than 2023 ended.
H appy New Years’ fellow snowmobilers, I hope all of you had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends over the past few weeks and enjoy the Christmas season. This December has been a bit of a challenge for snowmobile clubs and snowmobilers across our State. This has made very clear that both volunteerism & funding for the Maine snowmobile trail system needs help. Make sure to help out clubs where you live &/or ride, it is imperative for their future. I have seen and heard of folks from southern New England come up for a day of trail work, people brining their own heavy equipment to rebuild trails and so on. The snowmobile community is AWESOME, we just need a few more folks to step up and consistently help. You do not need special skills, there are so many ways to help, some you probably haven’t thought of yet. CLUBS: Please respond to offers of help, even if the answer is “not right now”. SNOMOBILERS: Step up, reach out & help. The work to prepare for and make great trails is never ending and getting more expensive. Aroostook County doesn’t seem to have the major issues from the December storm as other areas in the State. Multiple blowdowns, a few washouts but items that can be dealt with. I hope you are as anxious as I am to get out on the trails, but please be safe. The MSA’s “Ride smart today, ride again tomorrow” is how we should all think when firing up the sled & heading out. Take the time to talk to others about snowmobile safety and trail etiquette while stopped along the trail, everyone approaches trail safety differently and we can all learn from other experiences and stories. There are always multiple re-routes so please

As I sit here at the last minute writing this Saturday morning the 30 th it is snowing and oh so pretty out there, however it won’t amount to a hill of beans. I can’t thank Dana Bowman and Brent West enough for the great meeting they pulled together in Strong last Thursday, (I wished they told me about all the closed toads, haha).
