Inside the Norra Länken tunnel

Alvenius piping systems contribute to fire safety

The company has been working with the Norra Länken installation company for several years and has contracts for a number of other global tunnel projects. Alvenius states that factors including the low weight and wide range of the products, and their availability, are behind it winning such contracts. Alvenius has had a global presence since 1951, and is the supplier of piping systems for complicated projects such as Crossrail in London, Sochi’s snowmaking system, and the Øresund Bridge that links Sweden and Denmark.

energy efficient, durable piping systems with proven low life cycle costs, has been selected to supply thermoplastic- coated piping systems (TP), which will convey water for extinguishing any fires in the tunnels. Alvenius is supplying more than 19,000m of thermoplastic-coated pipes of four different dimensions: Ø 219 x 3.6mm, Ø 161 x 2mm, Ø 107 x 2mm, and Ø 60 x 1.8mm. The company is also supplying couplings and accessories. All pipes, couplings and pipe parts are thermoplastic-coated for maximum corrosion protection.

Northern Europe’s largest road tunnel project, Norra Länken, is currently being built under parts of northern Stockholm, Sweden. Its total length is 13km, of which 9km is rock tunnels and 4km is concrete tunnels. Work began in 2007 and parts of this important road are expected to enter into use during winter 2014-15. As the tunnels will be used by all types of traffic, including vehicles with flammable loads, the Swedish Transport Administration stipulated the tunnels must be built with fire safety systems that comply with C5M (marine environment).
