A warm welcome to the latest issue of Tube Products International magazine. Inside you will find all of the latest news and product information on companies in the tube products industry – from giant global companies to smaller, more specialised regional stockists. You will find everything you need to know to keep up to date and find the right product. This issue we also have a feature on plastic and composite tubes and take a look at three huge industry shows – Tube India 2014 in Mumbai, EuroBLECH 2014 in Hanover, Germany, and FABTECH in Atlanta, USA. The magazine will, of course, be represented at all of these shows so come and visit members of our team at their booths. The magazine will be freely distributed to the many thousands of visitors. I will be travelling to Atlanta, USA, in November for FABTECH. It will be my second visit to the city, which I found a very welcoming destination. Even in the two years since I last visited, the US, and the southern States in particular, have experienced a growing boom in energy-related industries such as oil and shale, so I expect the tube industry to be in a very positive mood following an up and down few years since the global financial crisis. The editorial deadline date for our November issue is 25 August with the advertising deadline on 5 September. That magazine will be distributed at Tube Arabia 2015 and

The roof of the Maracanã stadium

Duplex stainless steels in World Cup Final stadium

Sandvik was able to prioritise the production and delivery of 10,000kg of 80 x 60mm hollow bars. They were manufactured and then delivered to Hightex’s subcontractor in Poland, with prompt delivery that proved crucial to the project’s success and on-time completion. “We were the only supplier able to deliver within six weeks,” explained Dennis Ruh, Sandvik Materials Technology’s regional product manager based in Düsseldorf, Germany. “Sandvik is very proud to have provided its support, delivery and quality control to the Maracanã Stadium roof construction project.” Sandvik Materials Technology – Sweden www.smt.sandvik.com

but also at a competitive price. We selected Sandvik on that basis and they were able to deliver on time as promised,” explained Vladimir Renner, purchasing manager at Hightex. Hightex required the Duplex material for 60 cupolas, small light structures that encircle the highest point of the stadium’s roof and hold the radio cable girders in place. The cupolas must withstand extreme wind and rain pressures and handle a minimum loading of 220kN, corresponding to approximately 22 metric tonnes. Sanmac 2205 was used for the construction of the 60 cupolas, due in part to its capacity to handle pressures of 460kN, which provides the roof with a safety margin greater than two. The grade’s welding properties enabled strong welding to another stainless steel, while other elements included glass fabric material coated with Teflon for the roof itself.

Ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, crucial roof construction work at the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho stadium in Maracanã, Brazil, was completed successfully and on time, due to fast delivery of Duplex stainless steels by Sandvik Materials Technology. Hightex GmbH, a designer of roofing and façade membranes, required Duplex materials for a specific part of the World Cup Final venue. The stadium, just outside Rio de Janeiro, will also host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Olympics. With a tight construction deadline to meet, Hightex opted for hollow bars made from Sanmac ® 2205 Duplex stainless steel – a machinability- improved version of Sandvik SAF 2205 TM .

fabrication and installation of an eight- inch, 18km flowline between the Rolf A and Gorm E platforms; pipeline trenching and protection operations; fabrication and installation of 34 spools; and offshore commissioning. Technip’s operating centre in Oslo, Norway, will execute this project. Vessels from the group fleet, including the Wellservicer diving and multi support vessel, will perform the offshore installation in summer 2015. The flowline will be fabricated at Technip’s spoolbase in Orkanger, Norway, and will be installed by the Apache II , from Technip’s fleet.

Odd Strømsnes, managing director at Technip in Norway, commented, “This award confirms our leading position as contractor for diving operations in the North Sea. This project will be the second one awarded to Technip for the extension of the existing infrastructure on the Alvheim field, the first one having been executed in 2012 and 2013. We are looking forward to continuing and consolidating our collaboration with Marathon through this project.” Technip has also been awarded two contracts by Maersk Oil for the Valdemar and Roar Gas Lift project, as well as the Rolf Replacement Pipeline project, located on the Danish Continental Shelf, approximately 250km offshore Esbjerg, Denmark. The scope of work includes fabrication and installation of two riser caissons on the Valdemar and Roar platforms;

Three years ago, Inland Pipe Rehabilitation (IPR), in conjunction with Milliken Infrastructure Solutions, developed the EcoCast advanced geopolymer relining system to provide sewer infrastructure repair and rehabilitation. According to the American Society of Civil engineers, capital investment needs for the USA’s wastewater and stormwater systems are estimated to total $298bn over two decades. “Finding more cost-effective sewer rehabilitation solutions is the only way this country will be able to afford to have these very necessary repairs done,” stated Joe Cutillo, IPR’s CEO. “We spent two years perfecting the application process, while Milliken, our development partner, refined the GeoSpray material, because when it comes to introducing new sewer rehabilitation technologies, there is really no margin for error.” Keen to prove the effectiveness of EcoCast as a viable solution for large diameter sewer pipe rehabilitation, IPR The scope of work includes installation engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and tie-in of spools and protection covers, as well as installation of one manifold. The subsea operations will mainly be performed with divers at a water-depth of approximately 120m. The company’s operating centre in Stavanger, Norway, will administrate and execute the project, which is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2016. The offshore campaigns will take place in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and will utilise Technip’s Skandi Arctic diving support vessel, capable of working efficiently through winter in both construction and diving mode.

Fabrication of the caissons and spools will be locally performed in Denmark.

Premium line pipe solutions for Ghana offshore project

The TEN fields (Tweneboa, Enyenra and Ntomme) lie in the deepwater Tano block, around 60km offshore Ghana. The reservoirs are spread over 800km 2 , in water depths of between 1,000 and 1,800m. The development plan was approved by the government of Ghana in May 2013, and requires the drilling and completion of up to 24 development wells. These will be connected through subsea infrastructure to a floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel currently under construction in Singapore. First oil from the TEN fields is scheduled for mid-2016, and the nominal production capacity of the FPSO is 80,000 barrels of oil per day.

activities, commented, “Vallourec’s involvement in several parts of the TEN project demonstrates our ability to generate added value for our clients through flexibility, synergies and close cooperation. By providing an important number of non-standard pipe dimensions we help Subsea 7 facilitate the pipe-in-pipe design optimisation, and thus reduce total costs. Moreover, thanks to our lean logistics, our performing welding services, as well as our strong execution team, we offer a full support to our client to efficiently conduct this offshore project in Ghana.” Vallourec is a key supplier for Subsea 7 and has maintained this position through the delivery of line pipe products for the BG Knarr Project in Norway. The new contract for the TEN project reinforces the existing cooperation between the two parties.

Vallourec has been selected to supply premium line pipes and welding services for the TEN ultra-deepwater oil and gas project, operated by Tullow Oil plc in Ghana, and executed by a consortium of Subsea 7 and Technip. The company will provide Subsea 7 with seamless offshore line-pipe including anti-corrosion coating for a total of 15,000 tonnes. The pipes will be dedicated to production flowlines (pipe- in-pipe system by ITP InTerPipe) and gas export lines. Vallourec’s subsidiary, Serimax, an international welding company, will provide associated welding services for the double jointing operations related to the production pipe-in-pipe and the gas export lines.

US demand for water and wastewater pipe to exceed $18bn in 2018

High density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe will continue to gain ground on copper and other competing pipe materials. This is particularly true for cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe, which will continue to displace copper pipe in water distribution applications. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will remain the leading resin used in plastic pipe production due to its dominant position in large diameter applications. Despite the erosion of their market share to plastics, concrete and ductile iron pipe demand will retain significant market share due to widespread use in sewer, drainage and water transmission applications.

successfully increase end user water and sewer fees over the forecast period, enabling them to more easily fund repair and replacement projects.” In the building construction market, demand for water distribution and service pipe was severely constrained as new housing construction declined from 2006 to 2009, and non-residential building activity contracted at double- digit rates in 2009 and 2010. A strong recovery will occur in the housing market, with the number of housing starts expected to post double-digit gains to 2018, spurring demand for water pipe, particularly distribution and service pipe. Among pipe materials, metal will lose market share to plastic, continuing a long-term systemic trend. Demand for each type of metal pipe – ductile iron, copper and steel – is forecast to be less in 2018 than it was in 2008, reflecting increased use of plastic pipe in both small and large diameter applications.

Water and wastewater pipe demand in the USA will grow 7.7 per cent per year, to $18.1 billion in 2018, according to ‘Water & Wastewater Pipe’, a new study from The Freedonia Group, a USA- based industry market research firm. Gains will rebound from declines experienced during the 2008-2013 period, during which pipe markets were negatively impacted by decreases in construction spending. Strong increases in construction activity will fuel gains in the building construction market. The continued need to upgrade and repair ageing sewer and water pipe networks will spur gains in the municipal market, where the majority of pipe demand is attributable to the repair and replacement of a large existing infrastructure. According to analyst Mike Deneen, “There is a pressing need for repairs and replacement; however, they are often deferred until a burst pipe requires immediate action. It is anticipated that water utilities will

At the concurrent WPC Exhibition the world’s largest oil and gas companies, as well as oil and energy ministries from various countries, showcased their latest products and technology.

Dmitry Pumpyanskiy, chairman of TMK’s board of directors, delivered an opening address stressing the importance of the event for the global oil and gas industry, and highlighting the role TMK plays in this industry. The petroleum congress was attended by over 5,000 delegates from more than 60 countries. TMK is a global manufacturer and supplier of steel pipes for the oil and gas industry, operating 28 production sites in the USA, Russia, Canada, Romania, Oman, UAE and Kazakhstan, and two R&D centres in Russia and the USA. In 2013 the company’s pipe shipments totalled 4.3mn tonnes. The largest share of TMK’s sales belongs to high margin oil country tubular goods, shipped to customers in over 80 countries.

As a sponsor of the congress, TMK took an active part in the forum. The company’s executives and experts participated in the WPC discussions, round tables and presentations, while its exhibition stand showcased samples of the company’s technology, such as proprietary TMK UP premium connections, stainless pipe, large diameter pipe and vacuum insulated tubing. The company also contributed with a wide range of product catalogues and video presentations. Among the visitors to the exhibition stand were Alexander Novak, Russia’s energy minister, and Renato Bertani, the WPC president.

“Saudi Aramco is the major tubular products consumer in the Middle East, and its requirements for the quality of pipe go far beyond the industry average levels,” said Alexander Shiryaev, TMK’s CEO. “Selection of our products by the leading oil producer following the audit affirms that the quality of TMK’s pipe produced using the state-of-the-art technologies is in line with the highest world standards and shows that the company has a deep insight into the needs of its customers and markets.”

Sandvik SAF 2205 Duplex stainless steel tubes were specified for the project due to the fact they are suitable for use in applications involving highly corrosive conditions. The material offers mechanical strength as well as high levels of resistance to general corrosion and other types such as stress corrosion cracking, and pitting and crevice corrosion.

Key to Sandvik being awarded the contract was a site visit and audit undertaken by the customer’s project team, who were impressed with the quality of operations, facilities and staff at the mill, which was subsequently named as the preferred mill to handle the project. In addition, Sandvik built good relationships with the key fabricators and those responsible for engineering procurement construction (EPC). Daniel Zhao, regional sales manager, Great China, for Sandvik Materials Technology, said, “Winning this contract is the result of many months of hard work and discussion involving our technical and sales teams as well as our global project manager, who all contributed to our success in securing this business. In addition to the high standard of our mill and its facilities, the high resistance to corrosion offered by the Sandvik SAF 2205 was a major factor.
