Sometimes I seem to get lucky and love the painting that comes out. This is one of them. I wanted her noble, strong, focused, and a little bit wild. She isn’t mean, she isn’t sassy, she stands up for herself and for those she loves. She stands quietly, with that beautiful and wild stoicism.

I had a horse named Roulette who was my wonderful friend and partner. She gleamed like a new copper penny in the sunlight. With an athletic partner you get glimmers of perfection, then moments and then full performances like the perfect song you play when your horse is fully engaged with you. You have understanding and unity. You get a perfect performance on that day, at that hour, in that place. In the next moment you are out of control.

We all wear masks. Sometimes our masks are transpar- ent but sometimes they are not. We don’t knowwhat lies under the mask so we either want to discover or we avoid looking. She is named for Venice because that is where the most glorious masks are worn.

I went on a boat trip with some of my family to Anaca- pa Island which is off the coast of Santa Barbara. It was a spectacular day. On the way there the crewwarned us of heavy spray at the front of the boat so my brother stood right up front and got soaked....

I love fashion. I think many women do. When a woman puts on a great outfit she feels like a superhero. She loves her power, she be- lieves in herself. She may not be in a position of power over anything except herself, but she is in control. And she joyously interacts with her world.

There are times in our lives that are scary and we take comfort in things we know, patterns, art, people. Those are times when we go forward alone. Sometimes we are lucky to have a helping hand along the way if we need it.

This is based on a cactus type of plant. The actual plant in full light is a grayish, bluish pink. But in the early morning light it is warm pink. Because I couldn’t get that wonderful and gentle pink out of my mind I painted it this way.

I bought some new paint from a new vendor. I love to play with new colors to see how it behaves, how can I get the best out of it. The goal was to give pleasure to someone who views it.

I love trees. I love the majesty of trees, and I love the sci- ence of trees. They clean up our air, provide us with shade and help us appreciate another world outside of ourselves. They allow us to smell them, touch them, and bless us by just living. The way light comes through the trees and a branch fascinates me. If I could be a fairy I would dance in the early morning sunlight to celebrate the day. This paint- ing was conceived after a visit Kings Canyon Park.
