Student Interest: Have students work in pairs to tell a story about objects that interest them. One partner begins with 6 in his or her story. Use sentences to scaffold “I have 6 _____.” “Some are ______ and some are ______.” Then the other partner chooses how many of each type there are:“ _______ are _______ and ______ are ________.” Next, the second partner begins his or her story, this time with 7 objects. The frst partner chooses how many of each type there are. Have the students move objects as they create the story.
