IPA Friendship Weekend at Exmouth 2018 Combatting winter woes in the west of England

Was the weekend enjoyable - absolutely! We were treated to entertainment each evening and during the day small groups went their own way to discover the delights of South Devon. There is something wonderful about getting fresh air in beautiful countryside and meeting up with friends old and new to discuss the day’s exploits over dinner and make plans for the morrow. 94 members and family attended this event and it was generally agreed that, notwithstanding the trials and tribulations of external influences, it was the best yet and we’ll certainly come back for more!

Graham Bulford Secretary, Devon Branch For those who for many years have been coming to join in the Devon Branch Friendship weekends, they know that a little break in February with good friends in a warm atmosphere is the best way to make the most of winter. Or is it? We know that roads can cause a few problems; well this time it wasn’t the weather but the traffic on day one. There was a nasty prang on the M5 motorway going west and adventurers were halted in their tracks within sniffing distance of their destination. Many tried to avoid it and the A303 was then duly overloaded as well. There was no escape! After 11 hours of travel, Ken Heap and his family arrived from York. It was nice to be greeted by numerous old friends and settle into a relaxing weekend but was that to be the end of his woes? Fat chance. The following evening the electricity failed and his daughter was stuck in the lift. Press the emergency button and what do you get? Nothing! It was electrically operated. Thank heavens for mobile phones. They were rescued by staff between floors. We could not blame the hotel, the whole area and 7,000 homes were blacked out along with several other areas from Norwich to the west country.
