TOTALLY UNIQUE

One of London’s leading hotels has just upped its already stellar game. A stone’s throw from Harrods and Harvey Nichols, The Berkeley has unveiled elegant new designs by Robert Angell. Clean lines, marble flooring and veneered eucalyptus wood paneling with polished nickel inlays set a tone of cool opulence in the lobby. While the place to be seen, bijou cocktail salon the Blue Bar, has reopened after a sympathetic six-month refurbishment by Angell (the man behind the update of the American Bar at The Savoy) and his team. Bespoke furniture, upholstered in sumptuous fabrics by Irish textiles designer Jude Cassidy, and bold blue and red rugs introduce a welcome touch of modernity to the space. If cake, not cocktails, is in order, head to the Collins Room (pictured right). Chic lavender and blue tones, and custom-designed de Gournay wallpaper with a whimsical cherry blossom motif, are the perfect foil for the exquisite patisserie, artfully displayed on a striking marble counter. It’s here that guests can enjoy Prêt-à-Portea, the award-winning afternoon tea inspired by the fashion world. Other gastronomic highlights at The Berkeley include Marcus Wareing’s eponymous two-Michelin-starred restaurant and Pierre Koffmann’s informal brasserie, which specializes in seafood. But at this time of year, a visit to the hotel’s intimate rooftop winter cinema is a must. Overlooking Hyde Park, the temporarily transformed health club and spa screens seasonal classics such as Miracle on 34th Street or Santa Claus: The Movie accompanied by blankets, hot chocolate and mince pies. Watches

Left The Patek Philippe Ref. 5711/1P celebrates its anniversary with a solid platinum case and bracelet as well as perfect baguette diamond hour markers

Nautilus resurfaces Collectors have been waiting for the anniversary edition of the iconic Patek Philippe Nautilus watch, and the limited edition Ref. 5711/1P is worth the wait

Originally launched back in 1976, the steel Patek Philippe Nautilus shook up the watch world. Patek Philippe was a storied manufacturer of elegant gold dress watches, not of steel sport watches. Creating one of the first timepieces to be worn, as the vintage ads claimed, with “both a wet suit and a dinner suit,” the luxury steel timepiece had a hefty price as well as look. Ref. 5711/1P closely heels to the original piece, with only a time and date function. However, instead of steel, it has luxuriously evolved into a solid platinum case and bracelet. Showcasing the artisans’ finissage , the watch has many types of finishes, including chamfering, satin finishing, sandblasting and mirror polishing,

which all combine to bring out the beauty of the platinum. The iconic dial is 18K yellow gold with a blue PVD coating in a bright/dark gradation, then a discreet anniversary embossing above six o’clock and flawless baguette diamond hour markers. The familiar automatic caliber 324 S C movement powers the watch, which is so precise it exceeds the official standards for a chronometer. Limited to 700 pieces worldwide, the timepiece comes in a cork anniversary box, which is an authentic replica of the original presentation box from 1976. BRAND PROFILE MAÎTRE DU TEMPS

While watchmaking has always been a collaborative industry, founder Steven Holtzman takes this to new heights. He brings together groups of master watchmakers to develop new timepieces, allowing them to create pieces they could not have produced alone. This unique atelier has crafted some of the most complicated and interesting watches in recent history. Available at Cellini in New York, Stephen Gindi, stephen@cellinijewelers.com, +1 212 751 9824, maitredutemps.com 1. Chapter One Peter Speake-Marin and Christophe Claret launched the first timepiece, or chapter, in 2008. It is a world-first combination of complications including monopusher column wheel chronograph, retrograde date, retrograde GMT, plus rolling bars showing moon phase and day. $558,000 in 18K yellow gold, limited to 11 pieces Chapter One, Speake-Marin worked with Daniel Roth and created a brilliant Art Deco timepiece. Keeping the rollers, but making them instantaneous, the movement is even more efficient. $98,800 in 18K red gold 3. Chapter Three Reveal Kari Voutilainen and Andreas Strehler designed a complicated, but beautifully elegant, watch thanks to innovative hidden panels. A click of a pusher opens or closes to reveal a second time zone and a day/night indicator, powered by the marque’s signature rollers. $107,600 in 18K red gold 2. Chapter Two Drawing on his experience with

MONSIEUR DE CHANEL When Chanel does something, you can be assured it will be big and bold. Its first man’s watch does not disappoint; it has Chanel’s first in-house movement, called Calibre 1, which is also the first integrated movement with double complication for the house. The elegant yet masculine watch has a 40mm 18K beige gold round case designed specifically for the Monsieur, with a custom-designed font. There are three displays; an extra-wide retrograde minute hand, a seconds subdial and an octagonal window – echoing the shape of Place Vendôme in Paris – which shows the instant jumping hour. The back of the watch is almost a different timepiece; heavy-duty watchmaking is visible through a transparent black cover. The movement is black; a mix of glossy and matte ADLC carbon. This took Chanel five years to develop and it will only ever be used in the Monsieur – a significant investment for one timepiece. This project launched a partnership between Chanel and Romain Gauthier, one of Switzerland’s most talented independent watchmakers. This manual movement has a three-day power reserve and a retrograde minute bidirectional corrector. Chanel is initially releasing 300 pieces, 150 in 18K white gold, and 150 in 18K beige gold.

CONCEPT WATCH: THE TREZOR The Renault Trezor is an alarmingly exciting electric car that does away with doors, and yet still somehow seems to make perfect sense. It is without doubt the sort of French concept car we will all drool over, but which rarely (if ever) makes it into production.

A REVOLUTION ONWHEELS

Although we hear so much about “the car of the future,” with self-driving cars already on the road it seems tomorrow is here. Cars are semi-autonomous entertainment carriages, stacked with gadgets to keep passengers entertained while the car drives. Carrying out intelligent interactions with other vehicles and road infrastructure, cars can drive themselves safely to a desired destination, avoid traffic jams and drop passengers off before finding themselves somewhere to park. At a recent showcase in Munich, Audi showed off much of this technology on models currently available, such as the Audi Q7 eTron Quattro and next year’s A8. Download the Audi app and you can use your phone to control the car remotely, locking and unlocking the car wherever you are, plan journeys and share them with the sat nav and control heating or air conditioning to prepare the car before a drive. With electric or hybrid models, you can monitor the charge in the battery. And Audi is pioneering the use of “swarm intelligence,” where data from cars is aggregated and shared with all drivers, offering detailed live maps showing traffic levels and accidents. It allows the car to automatically plan a better journey. Specialist map business, Here – which is jointly owned by Audi, Daimler and BMW – has developed the Live Map to share such driving pattern data from all connected cars. It can also learn and predict likely traffic build-ups. In the US, Audi also offers its Traffic Light Information system, which links to local traffic lights, informing the car of the best speed to drive to avoid hitting a red light. Next year Audi will launch PIA (personal information assistant), which turns the car into an intelligent mobile hub, selecting favorite songs or radio stations for the journey, telling you when to leave for a meeting and prompting you to call the people you are meeting if you hit a delay on the way. It means fewer traffic jams and less time waiting at red lights. It means a car that is more enjoyable to drive and even more entertaining to be in. All that and it will park itself. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough. audi.com

In the not too distant future you will be able to control your car by a tap on an app

FERRARI LAFERRARI APERTA Unveiled at September’s Paris Motor Show, this drop-top version of the awesome LaFerrari is one of the most exclusive Ferraris ever made and marks the company’s 70th birthday. It comes with the same fierce hybrid combo as the hardtop LaFerrari, meaning a 6-liter V12 petrol engine and a 120Kw electric motor, sending it from a standstill to 60mph in under three seconds. There’s now the added appeal of the wind in your hair (if you have some). Thanks to a clever wind-stop system you can even have a conversation at high speed. $1.7million, ferrari.com PORSCHE 918 SPYDER Arguably the hybrid hypercar that sparked a whole new sector, and still one of the most fun to drive, the 918 combines a high-revving 4.6-liter V8 engine with two electric motors that produce a combined 210Kw of

extra power. The result is a quick, well-balanced and great fun package. If you want to boast of its racing credentials, theWeissach design package combines the Martini Racing heritage with the classic Porsche red and white. $929,000 (no longer produced so available from collectors only), 956.porsche.com/microsite/918 KOENIGSEGG REGERA Named after the Swedish for “reign,” Koenigsegg’s Regera aims to rule the road, combining a twin-turbo, 5-liter V8 engine with three electric motors. Throw in some cutting-edge new technology the firm calls Koenigsegg Direct Drive, which has allowed them to chuck out the gearbox, and you have a terrifyingly quick hybrid hypercar. Rather than dwell on the 0-60mph time, Koenigsegg’s boast is 0-250mph in under 20 seconds. Gulp! $1.9million, koenigsegg.com/regera

FORCES FOR FASHION Amilitary-inspired overcoat is the easiest and possibly the most classic way to incorporate one of the season’s biggest trends into your wardrobe. Whether a heavy greatcoat, or a modern cut covered with decorative regalia, there’s a cover up for every man. Dries Van Noten’s collection was full of militaria, ranging from dramatic to utilitarian. Tassels, regalia, gold embroidery and olive-colored jackets with sleeves covered in patches all made an appearance, but our standout piece is a chevron-printed greatcoat, which hits the mark without losing its wearability. Since launching his label in 2011, Belgian-born, New York-based designer Tim Coppens has deftly blended street culture with impeccable craftsmanship and tailoring. Here, his greatcoat has subtle military hints, including shiny gold buttons and exterior pockets. In Milan, Andrea Pompilio pays homage to his grandfather, who served in the military, with a fantastic coat. We love the bold gold stripes on the sleeves, which also feature on a blazer in the collection.

HERE COME THE MEN IN BLACK

Sometimes considering the menswear collections is an exercise in futility, bringing forth exclamations such as: “who is ever going to wear that!” “extremely practical!” and on occasion just a shake of my head with no words at all. A perennial look for well-dressed men is tonal dressing, and this season designers showed a genuinely practical and wearable version. Forget head-to-toe chartreuse; wear black on black. Clothing, accessories, outerwear, mixing fabrics and textures; whatever way you style it, you can actually wear it. I love this casual look from Bottega Veneta – the luxurious fabrics and perfect cuts keep it from skewing gothic. At Berluti, a leather jacket worn over a double-breasted suit and shoes with hidden gold accents is a statement of cool.

FUR SHOW Whether printed, mixed or even gold coated, this season designers brought opulence to new levels with their fur offerings For his first-ever couture collection for J. Mendel, designer Gilles Mendel pulled out all the stops to showcase his prowess with fur and his atelier’s impeccable manufacturing. While the hand-beaded dresses inspired by Keith Haring are stunning, we couldn’t take our eyes off the gold-infused furs. Using a special technique, Gilles mists the furs with liquid gold. The noir 24K-gold-infused, silver fox off-the-shoulder coat, pictured below right, has an invisible bead-encrusted corset and 24K gold-filled button details. At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld showed a collection of fun resort furs. The alternating stripes of fur and sheer fabric won’t keep you as warm as one of Fendi’s classic furs, but it is definitely more fun. Mixing different furs, including mink and fox, this is one of the most playful furs we have seen in quite some time. Always elegant and sophisticated, Carolina Herrera included a beautiful blue mink inlaid with a white floral design, brightening up a classic silhouette. Extremely wearable, we can see this coat flung over an evening gown as well as doing duty during the day.

JOIN THE ARMY

With the holiday season upon us, the wardrobe woes begin. Can I wear this dress to this party and that party, and who will see me both times? It’s too much! Let Armarium take charge. Its stylists, including celebrity super stylist Michaela Erlanger who dresses Lupita Nyong’o for her red carpet appearances, will plan perfect looks, down to the shoes, jewels and bags. Armarium stocks significant pieces from top designers that perhaps, if you were to purchase them, you’d only wear once. Here’s an eco-friendly fashion company we can get behind. We love the delicate gowns from Alberta Ferretti and embellished dresses from Prabal Gurung. And when the parties are over, take Armarium on vacation. The stylists can pack a suitcase for that too. stylist@armarium.com, armarium.com

Mix it up You’re already mixing up your separates, so take the plunge and buy a cocktail dress that will stand out this season. Marc Jacobs’ riotous patchwork of embellished animal prints and metallics is stunning and ready for a downtown party. We especially love the soda tabs on the neckline. At Christian Dior, an embroidered printed silk dress with a plunging neckline is sure to turn heads. Both can be made more versatile when worn with a long jacket. Take your styling cues from the runway and wear both dresses with ankle boots and a choker.

STARRY SKY Diamonds and star-shaped jewelry are a perfect

match – both twinkling and hypnotic. No wonder modern ewelry designers are enchanted. Brazilian jeweler H.Stern has been inspired by the estrela since its founding over 70 years ago. For its anniversary, H.Stern released the Genesis collection – a modern take on its famous stars. Dior Fine Jewelry designer Victoire de Castellane presented a collection inspired by Versailles. The Salon d’Apollon brooch features over 700 diamonds. Irreverent British jeweler Solange Azagury-Partridge is known for her eclectic collections, and we love the tough spin she puts on the classic star in her Celeste ring. An icon of Chanel, the Comète collection is always chic. The circular swoosh of these earrings is a fresh take on the shooting star. Every piece Lydia Courteille dreams up in her Paris atelier is one-of-a-kind. j

A cut above Some significant and stunning pieces being created today feature large beads or glowing cabochon-cut precious gemstones. This year, Nirav Modi presented a high jewelry collection at La Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris. The highlight of the collection is inspired by jewelry worn by 19th century Indian royals. The Emerald Maharani necklace features over 870 carats emeralds and 146 carats diamonds. Its graduated beads were meticulously sourced to ensure perfect symmetry and color matching. Tiffany & Co. and Takat showcase stunning tanzanites in sugarloaf-cabochon rings with diamond accents. Tiffany & Co.’s 32.27-carat stone is highlighted with an ocean-inspired sapphire and diamond design. Takat’s 43.41-carat tanzanite is surrounded by different cuts of diamonds in a pattern that creates a captivating play of light. Bayco’s Celestial Pyramid necklace from its Imperial Collection features a 60.09-carat sapphire. An unheated Burma sapphire of this size and clarity is rare, so it is cleverly convertible to a ring; the pendant is detachable and can be placed in the accompanying setting. Cabochons also make stunning drop earrings; we love Oscar Heyman’s earrings with perfectly matched emeralds and marquise diamonds. From Cartier’s newest high jewelry collection, Magicien, the Quetzal bracelet is inspired by the feathered serpent Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. The diamonds and black lacquer feather-scales curl around the wrist, topped off by two cabochon rubellites.

TEACHING YOUR COLLAR NEW TRICKS The wearable pet tech revolution has arrived. The Link AKC smart collar is an American Kennel Club-approved device that allows you to track your hound’s activity, keep an eye on his/her whereabouts and even set electronic boundaries (something Link calls “an electrical safe zone”) to limit where they can wander. You can also use it to monitor ambient temperature and there’s even a light to make sure you don’t lose them when you let them out at night. And all this activity can be tracked via a phone app. It even comes in a stylish leather collar. No wonder Link describes it as “beauty and brains.” $199, linkakc.com

But what if it’s your nearest and dearest who irritate you? Thankfully the flexible display experts at Royole have an answer.
