At St. Jo· seph's Cathedral, Third Ave. and Beech St., parishoners filled the Church to overflowing, when Most Rev. Charles Francis Buddy, D.D., Bishop of the San Diego Diocese, and five priests distributed ashes at a noon Mas-s. Ashes also were distributed throughout the n,1orning and at two afternoon services in the Cathedral. Similar rites were conducted a other parishes and in some Epis• copal churches. The ashes. ob• tained by burning the palms of the previous Palm Sunday, were con,.ecrated early in the day by priests and rectors.
