About Politics
The Catholic Church is not interested in the cam• paign of any particular candidate. Neither the Most Rev• erend Bishop, nor the clergy, have endorsed an aspirant to pubIic office. But the Church is vitally concerned in good govern• ment-politics i"n the right sense. Everyone should take part in promoting honest, efficient government, on which depends the impartial administration of justice, protection of life and property. Failure of a people to interest themselves in the public weal results in the disgraceful compromise of the American tradition of fair play, incompetence, dictator• ship, loss of liberty, virtual enslavement. Hence, it is the citizen's solemn duty to vote intelligently. With good reason, then, this paper commends the recently formed Civic Committee composed of Catholic, nGn-Catholic and Jewish leaders representing every race and color in San Diego County. The organization of this fearless group not only fosters intelligent use of the bal• lot but marks constructive progress for the community. No one can vote intelligently unless acquainted with the _ qualifications-the character, affiliations and record of candidates. The Civic Committee has issued a compre- • hensive and timely questionnaire which together with a fine-comb double check will aid voters in their quest for accurate information regarding the calibre of men who, presenting themselves for a pol itica I office, ask the people to entrust them with mighty responsibilities.
