I I The University of San Diego, which sponsors I sixteen NCAADivision I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname of Toreros. In 1961, the Most I Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, an– I nounced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with I the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego I and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero I comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring I are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a I bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USD I student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in a time of competition and accept the I challenge. I The 2005-2006 school year marks the 45th an– niversary with Toreros as the official nickname for USD l athletic teams.
