THE SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego, along with the USD campus, trace their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. ACADEMICS
USD enrolls more than 7,400 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College ofArts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law, Nursing and Peace Studies. Class size generally averages between 15-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university consistantly ranks among the top schools in the United States. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach par– ties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The in– tramural program is also an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USD community partaking in intramural sports.
ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for
nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAADivision I level. The football team just completed its 13th season in the Pioneer Football League. Women's sports include basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990, USD teams have made 45 NCAA post-season appearances; garnered 50 All-America selections; had 37 Conference Coaches of the Year; 30 Conference Players of the Year; 15 Conference Freshman of the Year; won 15 conference championships; and 4 WCC Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

In 1961, the Most I Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, an– I nounced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with I the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego I and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero I comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring I are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a I bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. 2 USD SOFTBALL LOOKS TO SENIOR LEADERSHIP IN 2006 Coming off a personal-best 18 win season , head coach Melissa McElvain returns for her 5th season with San Diego. The Toreros set some milestones last season , including defeating San Diego State for the first time in school history and a record number of athletes received conference honors in the Pacific Coast Conference. USO took on their cross-town rivals at SDSU's softball stadium on March 9. The Toreros sealed the 2-0 victory when Christina Haake (Goleta, CA) struck out SDSU's Megan McDonald to end the game marking USD's first victory over San Diego State in their 40-game rivalry. San Diego then went on to begin conference play with a 4-game sweep of St. Mary's (April 2-3). At the conclusion of the 2005 season , six USO athletes were honored by the conference, more than any other school in the league. Juniors Gina McFarland (P/OF, Santa Rosa, CA) and Ashlee Nunes (SS, Roseville, CA) and sophomores Alicia Massei (1 B, Chino Hills, CA) and Danielle Treiber (2B, Orange, CA) were all honored with fi rst-team awards. Junior Sara Mason (C, Santa Rosa, CA) and freshman Kathleen Bonja (3B, San Dimas, CA) earned honorable mention . The

all-conference in 2005 . Toreros also had eight athletes earn All-Academic Conference Honors (K. Delpit, Ramos, McFarland, Mason, Merchain, Hightower, McClelland, and Pujol). The Toreros lost only four athletes last season ( two seniors, two juniors) and have nine players returning to their line-up (6 position players, 3 pitchers), including their six All-Conference athletes from 2005. "We have tremendous leadership and experience on this year's team," McElvain said. "Our seniors are very special as well as terrific models of the ideal student-athlete." The 2006 schedule includes tough non-conference opponents such as #12 Oregon State, #13 University of Wash– ington, #14 Fresno State, and #17 DePaul , all of whom will be participating in the Fresno State Tournament. "Our challenging pre-season and tournament schedule should sufficiently prepare us for our conference season ," McElvain said . "Our schedule is extremely challenging and very exciting ." USO will also take on cross-town rival San Diego State, another tough opponent, once at home and once at SDSU . Seniors Gina McFarland (P/OF, Santa Rosa, CA) and Erin Harmonson (P, San Diego, CA) have been named team captains this spring and look to lead the Toreros to a winning season. Sen iors Ashlee Nunes (SS, Roseville, CA), Marissa Merchain (C/1 B, La Mirada, CA) and Sara Mason (C/3B, Santa Rosa, CA) will also provide leadership to the team as well. "This senior class has the skill and ability to lead the team to a very successful season ," McElvain said . Sophomore Kathleen Bonja (3B, San Dimas, CA),
the 2005 USO Team Rookie of the Year and co-MVP, returns after a stellar season in which she made 41 starts in 42 ap– pearances with 16 runs, 14 RBI, 14 doubles, and a .336 batting average. San Diego travels to two tournaments this season at UC Riverside (February 10-12) and Fresno State (March 9-12). The annual USO Invitational takes place on February 25-26 and includes UC Riverside, Utah State University and University of Nevada-Reno for the eight game event. The Toreros will also take on cross-town rival San Diego State on February 15 (away) at 6 pm and again on March 1 (home) at 6 pm. They begin conference play at home with a double header against Santa Clara on April 8 at noon.

Melissa McElvain enters her fifth year as USD's Head Softball Coach. In her first 4 seasons as head coach, 11 athletes have earned All-Conference honors, 29 were All-Academic student-athletes, and eight were awarded with the PCSC Commissioner's Honor Roll. In 2005, McElvain led the Toreros to the program's first victory over cross-town rival San Diego State on March 9, defeating the Aztecs 2-0 in extra innings. Another first was the four-game sweep of a PCSC opponent, St. Mary's (Mar. 2-3). In their first season as a member of the PCSC in 2004, the Toreros defeated BYU 4-3 in an extra inning contest. The 2003 campaign was highlighted by their 7-3 win over 20th-ranked Oregon State. The 2002 season was highlighted by the team's upset of 10th-ranked Cal State Fullerton. Also in 2002, 12 Toreros were named to the Western Intercollegiate All-Academic squad, and two earned All-WISL Tourney honors.

A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, McElvain (formerly Turley) earned All-Big XII honors while playing catcher and second base. She ranks in the Top 20 all-tme at OSU in several categories, including games played, hits, total bases, doubles, RBI and stolen bases. McElvain led the Cowgirls to three post-season appearances and a third place finish in the 1998 Women's College World Series. While at Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big XII academic honors while attaining a Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Additionally, she earned the OSU Community Service Contribution Award ( 1997-98); the NCAA Leader– ship Award (1998); and was a four-year SAAC Representative, serving as SAAC President in her senior year. No stranger to USO, prior to her appointment as softball coach
she was Assistant Sports Information Director for a year-and-a-half. A native San Diegan, McElvain attended nearby Patrick Henry HS. Melissa, her husband Ryan and their daughter Mia reside in San Carlos.
Jennifer Bridges begins her third season on the USD coaching staff and second as the top assistant. She will work with all aspects of the team, also contributing to recruiting, scheduling and fundraising. Last season, Jennifer worked as a second assistant for the Toreros. A 2001 USD graduate, Bridges earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, along with a minor in Business Administration. While playing for the Torero softball program Bridges played catcher, third base and first base. She earned her Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University in 2003. Her previous coaching experience includes assisting the softball programs at the University of San Diego High School and Whittier College. She is from Downey, California in the Los Angeles County area.

Kim Aggabao begins her second season on the Torero staff as the second assistant/ volunteer coach. As the second assistant, she will work primarily with the infield and hitting. Aggabao comes to USD from UC San Diego, where she graduated in 2004 as a Biology major. She was a four-year starter as a middle infielder for the Triton softball team and was named team captain both her junior and senior year. Aggabao was also named first-team All California Collegiate Athletic Association three times, and was the CCAA MVP her senior season after leading the league with a .411 batting average. Originally from Walnut, California, Aggabao finished her career at UCSD hitting .312 and ranks in the top six all-time in six different categories. Last year, she also set the Triton record for most doubles in a season with 23.

Francesca Ramos steps up her role from player to volunteer coach for the Toreros after four years as a member of the team. A graduate of USD last year, she majored in Sociol– ogy and minored in Leadership & American Humanics. She finished with a career 110 appearances with 69 starts, 127 at bats and 18 runs for San Diego. A local from San Diego, Ramos attended Point Loma High School where she played four years of varsity softball, team winning a league championship in 1999. As a Torero, Ramos continued her career and was named PCSC All-Academic in 2004 and 2005. Currently, Ramos is working as an Account Executive Assistant for Orion Internation– al where she assists former military personnel find employment when they are finished serving. She is also pursuing a Masters Degree in Leadership Studies at USD as well.
