(Man is continually trying to reach God through good works, church membership, baptism, sacraments, etc.)

No matter how hard man tries to reach God, he cannot do it himself. We are sinners, and our SIN separates us from God. It takes someone who is perfect, without sin, and completely righteous to save us, because we are sinners.
