NEWYORK’S FLOATING PARK Suspended over the Hudson River, Pier55 is a 2.7-acre park being constructed between the pile fields of Pier 54 and Pier 56. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick (the British designer whose projects include Al Fayah Park in Abu Dhabi and Moganshan in China), the $130m design is largely being funded by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg and will be built and operated in cooperation with the Hudson River Park Trust. Heatherwick Studio describes Pier55 as a “place of discovery, where visitors can wander and wonder,” and can do so among the lush lawns and undulating pathways, enjoying panoramic views of the Manhattan and northern New Jersey skylines. The design features golf-tee-like stilts that rise from the river to support the topography. The park is also set to be a performance venue for New York’s vibrant music, dance, theater and public art scene. Completion is scheduled for 2020. heatherwick.com
