Chebeague Island Council Calendar September 2025 Issue #9
Christine Auffant
The deadline for submissions for the October issue is noon on September 20. Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $80, ½ page, $40; ¼ page, $20; 4-line classified, $10; 6 to 8 line classified, $15. Each submission should include the intended publication date, size wanted, and the number of months the ad should run. All ads must be paid for at the time of submission. School House Seconds had a particularly good season. So many really great do nations and happy shoppers. Christine Auffant, the Council’s Program Manager, is quick to say that such success is thanks to Caroline Schultz and her team of hardworking, faithful, volunteers who show up every week to sort and fold and fold and sort, offer fashion tips, and answer all the questions - how does this work? can I use this in the oven?, do you have change for a 50? can you hold this for me until next week? – with a smile! And we are sure, knowing the mon ey earned will help with the Fuel Fund, all their hard work will bring smiles all winter long. Thank You! Chebeague Transportation Company Newsletter September 2025
Back to School Labor Day Weekend is right around the corner. It may seem like the unofficial end of summer, but September is a summer month in Maine. This means the ferry can be just as busy with visitors, summer residents and year round residents. However, our schedule does change when school is back in session. CTC actually runs more trips during the school year to accommodate the students in the Yarmouth School District. If your child is headed off to the mainland for school this year please remember the following: Contact the Chebeague Island School to make sure they are on the list to get a Student Ferry Pass The CTC bus does not meet the morning or afternoon school boats. The CTC Bus provides a late but service to the High School for the 6:00pm and 7:45pm bus trips.
Barging is not done yet! September can be one of our busiest months of barging with contractors working to get projects done before winter. We plan to barge through through November. However, weather has more and more of an impact as the seasons start to change. After Indigenous Peoples’ Day Weekend we do have more flexibility on what days we can barge as it is considered our “shoulder season”. We are currently running trips from Cousins Island and Yankee Marina, so call the Office for all of your barging needs!
The school boat is back September 2nd!

THANK YOU!
I want to thank the island community for the generous support you have given me since Bruce’s passing. I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of kindness from so many of you from near and far. The hugs, flowers, baked goods, kind words and finan cial support have helped me through the very hard days. He missed so much. I would like to give a special thank you to the Chebeague Fire & Rescue and to CTC. Thank you, Cindy
A BIG THANK YOU to all who attended our annual meeting last month! And, a special thanks to all who have helped bring the new year round housing duplex to completion at 553 South Road. Renters have been selected by an independent committee, and will be moving in by the time you read this article. Many Chebeaguers have donated dollars, volunteer hours, and support in general, and we really appreciate it!

Selectboard News - September 2025
The Parking and traffic Conversation Saturday 8/9/25 was well attended by over 45 people. Many concerns regarding parking issues at Cousins, Stone pier, The Hook, Jenks, and Bennett’s Cove were discussed and recommendations offered. A summary of the meeting is forthcoming and will be posted on the Town website. Thanks to Jamie Garvin of GPCOG for facilitating the meeting! In July, the Selectboard approved parking plans completed by GEI for The Hook and Jenks Road which are designed to move the parking out of the dune area. GEI is completing the applications to the Planning Board on behalf of the Town and both projects are expected to be on the Planning Board agenda at their September meeting. Notices will be sent to abutting property owners and the meeting agenda will posted on the Town website, the boat and at the store.
A long overdue replacement for the Public Works utility truck has been identified and is currently being purchased and readied for service. Thanks go out to our Island Fellow, Ellie Hughes for organizing the Energy Collective Audit and Purchasing meeting held 8/14/25 for property owners interested in residential energy audits, insulation, and heat pump installation services. If you missed the meeting, you may still contact Ellie at ehughes@gpcog.org to sign up for an assessment and estimate of work to be performed. Heat pump rebates are expiring at the end of the year so don’t delay! Our next Selectboard meetings are scheduled for 09/3/25 and 9/17/25. Feel free to reach out to members of the Selectboard for any ideas or concerns you may have.

Energy sustainability and affordability
SUMMER 2025
Municipal Electrification
Heating the school, town office, and public safety building with expensive fuel oil produces 40% of our municipal greenhouse gas emissions. CCAT secured over $90,000 in state funding for a full transition to heat pumps in these buildings.
Wildfire Mitigation
CCAT is exploring alternative wood waste management strategies at the Transfer Station for wildfire mitigation, cost reduction, and energy resilience. We hosted our partner scientists for an island visit in July full of sight-seeing, data collection, and conversation with community members. Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project The Town and CCAT hosted 13 volunteers from Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster response organization, for a weekend of wildfire mitigation work in June. Team Rubicon Coastal Resilience CCAT worked with FB Environmental to host a coastal resilience workshop, identifying community challenges and priorities in the face of sea level rise and severe storms. Next, we’ll work with the Town to incorporate coastal resilience into our ordinances and new comprehensive plan.
Collective Purchasing
CCAT negotiated bulk discounts on energy audits, insulation, and heat pumps to make more than 20 participating island homes more comfortable, sustainable, and affordable in the heating season to come. CCAT’s new program provides free, one-on-one guidance to residents interested in energy efficiency and electrification upgrades. We can help with project planning, quote review, incentives, and more!
