Skill Building

Connection to Prior Knowledge: Read the Solve & Share with students. Discuss the term intersect. Have students name examples where the term is used, such as where two streets intersect. Connect students’ understanding of representing data on a line plot and locating fractions and decimals on a number line to plotting points on a coordinate grid. This may be the frst time that students have used two perpendicular number lines to locate a point in the plane. Discuss the term origin and explain to students how the origin is the intersection of the horizontal and vertical number lines. Have students explain to partners where the intersections are on a coordinate grid and why they are important in locating a specifc point. 14-4: Pick a Project: Game Time! For an added challenge, students can expand the coordinate grid for the game or change the scale of each plot square.
