Connect to Prior Knowledge: Use visuals to show the relationship and distinction between tens and tenths, hundreds and hundredths as well as thousands and thousandths. Students need to understand that -th means a fraction. Money is a great way to make decimals visual and to make connections. One dollar is the whole and then a dime is the tenth while ten dollars represents ten. A penny is one hundredth and one hundred dollars represents one-hundred. Pick a Project: 1C: Research Measurements in Our Solar System. Students could also make their own place value chart using abstract representations of each place value based on a theme. They can annotate their chart with standard form, expanded form, exponential form, and an illustration that represents the relative size. For example: if a basketball represents the tens place, what piece of sports equipment would represent the thousands? Tenths?

Strand: Cycling of Matter in Ecosystems Standard 5.2.2 Develop and use a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Emphasize that matter cycles between the air and soil and among plants, animals, and microbes as these organisms live and die. Examples could include simple food chains from ecosystems such as deserts or oceans or diagrams of decomposers returning matter to the environment.
