5th Grade Math Scope & Sequence Topic 2 Add and Subtract Decimals to Hundredths
FLEXIBLE PACING STANDARDS
REPORTING STANDARDS
KEY LANGUAGE USE
● Model and calculate decimals to the hundredths place using the four operations
Standard of Mathematical Practice #4: Model with mathematics. Content Standards: Standard 5.NBT.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. In this standard, dividing decimals is limited to a whole number dividend with a decimal divisor or a decimal dividend with a whole number divisor. Compare the value of the quotient on the basis of the values of the dividend and divisor.

End of Unit Competency
By the end of Topic 2 students will be able to explain how sums and differences of decimals can be estimated and found mentally, as well as common procedures for adding and subtracting decimals. Language Functions & Features Describe data and/or steps to solve problems using ● Observations ( notice, it appears, looks like ) and comparative language ( different from, similar to, the same ) to share results ( I notice this model has more… ) ● Mathematical terms ( compatible numbers, properties of addition, compensation, partial sums, partial differences ) ● Visuals (models) to support approach and/or solution ● Declarative statements to state conclusion ( This estimate is closer because… )
