37 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

of mature and self-assured rugby continued – not just in the opening game but in the subsequent two games, too, where all players made significant contributions on the pitch. Rugby Club Checco Camposampiero were astonishingly good hosts, and even provided a line of young mascots to lead our players out in a flag-bearing ceremony before the game and a speech from the local Mayor (despite the comprehension skills of even our best linguists on the pitch, most of it went over their heads!). The two-match test between these two sides was fought out in wonderful spirit, and we will certainly have fond memories of playing such champagne rugby in such tough conditions. Onwards to Rugby Lumezzane - a beautiful spot in the foothills of the Italian Alps and an incredible pitch. This team were very well drilled, and the physical challenge was a wake- up call to the demands of the long season ahead of the 1st XV. Teddies adapted well to the pressure, and soon we were dominant once more thanks to some outstanding marshalling by Mike Denvir at fly half and the industrious work of Will James who finished as the top try-scorer on tour. The Players’ Player award went to Gabriel Munroe for his powerful running and supreme strength in the contact area, whilst the Coaches’ Player award went to Charlie Keen for his turnovers and work at the breakdown.

Fergus Flory, James Churchman, Sam Cave and Ferdi van der Heiden are joined by mascots as they lead the team out to play v Checco Camposampiero.
