From the Editor…

This month’s cover displays the beautiful Balloon launch last year, symbolic of our freedom to fly, in front of the club and artistically centered on our full complement of Club Flags with Old Glory flying proud from our foremast. The center photo of course denotes the club we all come to support and enjoy. In honor of our opening ceremonies being Memorial Day we reflect upon those who’ve guaranteed our freedoms to fly balloons and to come and enjoy a place such as the North Channel Yacht Club. Very few things symbolize the cost of our freedoms more than Arlington Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It’s hard to imagine in our hyper-connected world that until recently a young man could join or be drafted or even pressed into military service, go off to fight a war, and never be heard from again. Yet less than a century ago more than one hundred thousand did precisely that in WWI, as have many more since. Congress commissioned the Tomb of the Unknowns to honor those lost and unidentified men. Memorial Day has origins going back to the Civil War. Like so many other veterans, my dad told me he did it so I wouldn’t have to, and I strive to never forget that. The following pages are full of club activities for the rest of the summer. The Schedule of Events is packed with things to do and enjoy. The Rendezvous Schedule is completed and please do make plans to join in the fun. The Beacon has several flyers for various events, and in keeping with the Memorial Day theme, I’ve included one for the Boat-4-Vets day. Most Importantly; the Secretary has finalized the OD Work Weekend Schedule for the year. Be sure to look yourself up and arrange your time accordingly. The OD’s will be contacting you to set up your times and duties. REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE A CONFLICT IT’S UP TO YOU TO FIND A REPLACEMENT. So on Memorial Day, come, Eat, Drink, and Be Merry! Let’s spend a summer enjoying our postage stamp of paradise, and when the bell tolls, remember the words inscribed on the end of the Tomb of the Unknowns: HERE RESTS IN

May is here already and this year’s projects are nearing completion. The new bar and granite top is installed and the drywall in the bar area is up and ready for paint. The new door for the walk in cooler egress is installed and is ready to be trimmed and the new walkway between the seawall and clubhouse is roughly 50 percent complete. The First Mates project providing air conditioning and heat to the upstairs rooms is complete. The turnout for the Elite Brigade work parties has been excellent and the amount of work that has been accomplished is amazing. We will be able to use the two spring work parties on May 13th and 20th to concentrate on polishing up the clubhouse and grounds for the opening weekend. We have two open weeks on the Weekday Manager’s schedule left to fill, June 25-30, and July 23-28. Please step forward and volunteer to take a week. If you have been considering it, grab some friends and take a week. It really is not that difficult and you will enjoy it. In just three short weeks the club will be open. Nancy and I are looking forward to this year and all of the planned events. We hope you will choose to share them with us. Commodore Pat Carroll

Rear Commodores Comments…

At the time of writing this article we have three Elite Brigade weekends under our belt and 23 days until opening weekend. If you have not made it out for a work party you will be impressed when you see what has taken place! The bar has been reinstalled and the back door, walkway, and the First Mates air conditioning project on the upper floor are also nearing completion. It always amazes me how we perform major improvements to our Island treasure in such a short period of time. Now that our Elite Brigade teams are almost done with these improvements, it will be impressing to watch the membership come together and ready the island for the summer. Thank you to those who have participated to make this happen. Also a huge thank you to Jill Romatz and her team for once again organizing the First Mates Fashion show event. A huge amount of prep work goes into making this a successful fundraiser for our Club. The First Mates contribution plays a major part in our ability to finance the Elite Brigade Projects. As stated above, Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner. This is a very special weekend at NCYC. It kicks off Friday night welcoming “Little Camille’s ” to the island to serve our Friday night dinner. Saturday morning starts with a First Mates General Membership Meeting and then they host their Annual First Mates Patio Party for all NCYC membership to attend. Shortly afterwards the General Membership Meeting is held where the new members of NCYC are introduced. We finish off the day with the Fitting out dinner and live entertainment. Sunday, the Pride of Michigan arrives and we have the official flag raising ceremony paying honor and remembrance to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Ceremonies are followed by the Commodore’s luncheon and Blessing of the NCYC fleet. Along with being steeped in tradition this is a fun packed weekend.

The weekend of June 2-4, NCYC will be hosting the ABYA Spring Dinner Dance. As the host club, please try to attend and support ABYA. Also on that weekend there will be pontoon demo’s provided by Crest Pontoon’s. If you are in the market or would like to test drive a pontoon, this will be a great opportunity for no cost!!

Put the beer down and join us on the weekend of June 9-11 when the cigar, whiskey and wine tasting event is taking place. Who knows, you may acquire a passion for cigars and whiskey if you don’t already…… Like my buddy Jimmy says, “show me the way to the next whiskey bar”.

As you can see, there are many events planned and many more to come. So, let’s get the work done to prepare our Club so the fun may begin. I hope you plan to attend as many events as you can, as this is where memories and friendships are made.

AMessage From ChaplainArtBrooks…

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN ART BROOKS The month of April started with Sue Reiss being hospitalized in Florida. I am happy to let you know that she is back in Michigan as of April 19th. She is at Heartland Health Care Center, 38200 Schoenherr, Sterling Heights, 48312 for rehab. She is registered as Linda Sue Reiss. Sue, we are continuing our prayers for your speedy recovery.

For Mothers Day, I have included the following word picture. “ What is a Mother ” A mother can be almost any size or age, but she won’t admit to anything over thirty. A mother has soft hands and smells good. A mother likes new dresses, music, a clean house, her children’s kisses, an automatic dishwasher. A mother doesn’t like having her children sick, muddy feet, temper tantrums, or bad report cards. A mother can read a thermometer…and like magic, can kiss a hurt away. A mother can bake good cakes and pies but likes to see her children eat vegetables. A mother can stuff a fat baby into a snowsuit in seconds and kiss little sad faces and make them smile. A mother is underpaid, has long hours, and gets very little rest. She worries too much about her children, but says she doesn’t mind at all. No matter how old her children are, she likes to think of them as her little babies. She is the guardian angel of the family, the queen, the tender hand of love. A mother is the best friend anyone has ever had ! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

First Mates of North Channel Yacht Club

Dear First Mates,

I have been appointed by our President Linda Pagel to chair the 2017 First Mates By-Law Committee. The Purpose of the Committee will be to review the current First Mates By-Laws and ensure they are inline with the new NCYC By-Laws. I would like to invite any current First Mates to join our committee who are interested in helping with our 2017 By-Law “review”. I am hoping to form a committee of four. The plan would be to set up monthly “Skype” meetings throughout the winter and hold in person meetings during the summer. To join the committee, you would need to have access to Skype, as this will be the medium used during the winter months .

If you have interested, please contact me at mariejospepin@gmail.com

Again thank you, I truly look forward to working with you.

About Us Our group is dedicated to thanking our veterans for their service protecting the many freedoms that we enjoy everyday. How we have grown We started in 2009 with our first outing that hosted 60 people. In 2012 we added a second chapter on Lake Fenton based out of “Skipper Buds’” and we hosted over 150 people. We expanded again in 2014 adding our Blue Water Chapter. In 2016 our Lake St. Clair chapter hosted over 160 people with the help of numerous volun- teers and the staff of “The Idle Hour Yacht Club”. In 2017 we look to make the event even better than 2016 because we can simply not do enough to show our gratitude for those who served.

Let’s be reminded of my board expectations from the January meeting. Please be prepared for the meeting, and speak only when you are acknowledged. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Randy Pagel With Spring only 11 days away, we are excited about getting the Club ready for opening day. The Commodore will be starting his project of the new walkway and door project. We also have to re- assemble the bar and rough in the air conditioning/electrical service for the upstairs apartments and rooms. Let’s start to “talk up” the amount of work we need to do this spring and promote large membership turn out and make the Club ready for summer. We also have to focus on obtaining new members; we’ve lost quite a few this year. I emailed to all of you an article regarding Yacht club membership and how to change our current way of thinking. We will have a tough time sustaining our income if our membership continues to drop. We need to continue to discuss new strategies. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Ian Blackburn I know over the past few months, some of the board members have had their hands full; I would like to thank them for their efforts and devotion to the club. That being said, it is time for the rest of us to move into high gear. Opening weekend will be here before we know it, and we want to make it as smooth as possible. If you need any help with your individual duties, please make sure you reach out to a fellow board or flag member. We are a team, and we should conduct ourselves as such, by supporting one another. Financial Report Commodore Pat Carroll for Treasurer, Brian Fringer The financial report was distributed via e-mail prior to the meeting and summarized. Revenue for February 2017 was $45,275 and $103,375 Year to Date (YTD). Membership revenue was $43,928 and boat well fees were $1,350 for February. The YTD revenue is down compared to 2016 by $6,675; the majority of the difference is Membership Dues. The net Profit for February is $36,471. Our cash position is $188,682 as of 28 February 2017; that includes $47,821 in the Emergency Fund. Member Notes Update: To date, we have redeemed 9 out of the 12 promissory notes. One member has requested to donate their principal and interest payment, less their 2017 dues, back to the club. Updated paperwork was sent, and we are awaiting its return. 2016 Review and Tax Return Update: All information was sent to David Bultynck to start the process. They are having a difficult time opening the QuickBooks back-up, so they will be provided with a thumb drive with the QuickBooks file or remote into the Treasurer’s computer. Bank Account Update: All bank accounts have been funded, and the majority of the direct debits have been switched to the new bank accounts. The First Merit/Huntington accounts will remain open until there is confirmation that everything transferred properly. If there are any issues with the new debit cards, please inform the Treasurer. Tax Exempt Status: There has been conversation regarding NCYC tax exempt status; we file as a 501(c)7 organization. However, after discussion with David Bultynck, NCYC is not tax exempt. If anyone has information to the contrary, please inform the Treasurer.

MOTION: Moved by Scott Greenfelder and seconded by Dale Hall to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried ABYA Report P/C Chuck Stroh The ABYA is working with the Coast Guard to put lights or reflectors on the expressway buoys out of the North Channel into Lake St. Clair. ABYA has contributed funding to the MacArthur Park canoe/kayak launch in Mt. Clemens. They are also The Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC) presented at the last ABYA meeting. The ABYA will not be participating in the Clinton River Clean-up this year due to concerns regarding the health and safety of its members given the condition of the river. P/C Chuck Stroh distributed copies of the ABYA Marine Safety Statues books to the board and flag. He will place additional copies in the clubhouse for the membership. Correspondence All A letter was received from P/C McEvoy recognizing that the paying the member notes off in 12 months was a significant accomplishment and recommended that the participants be acknowledged. Commodore Pat Carroll will prepare an article for the Beacon or a Fan-Out to acknowledge those who participated. Kim Miedema received a letter from the Inter-Lakes Yachting Association (ILYA) inquiring about the club’s interest in advertising in the ILYA annual yearbook for $150. NCYC has participated for annually. MOTION: Moved by Kim Miedema and seconded by V/C Randy Pagel to advertise in the ILYA Yearbook. Motion Carried Glenn Nixon has not been seeing all of the correspondence, and should be filing a paper record of that information as Secretary. Commodore, Pat Carroll, will forward the correspondence to date to working with the Macomb County Sherriff to establish a safe-zone around the park. Sailing Singles mentioned that many of their members are looking for a club to join. Activities – Tom Martin An email was sent to Jr. Members inquiring their interest to participate as paid bartenders. As a reminder, working as a paid bartender does not count toward work hours. Club House – Scott Greenfelder Spider Control is currently scheduled to spray the club one week before Opening Weekend. There was discussion that it may be better to schedule application a couple weeks earlier and on a weekday. Scott will check into it and report back at the next meeting. Window and door quotes have been received for the walkway to the cooler; Don Shepperson will be heading up that project. V/C Randy Pagel will be heading up the air conditioning installation, and Scott Greenfelder will direct the installation of the bar and countertop. Commodore Pat Carroll will verify that the bar and countertop will be ready to install the 1 ST or 2 ND weekend of April. Scott is collecting items to rebuild the ventilation system under the clubhouse. He will also will line- up the cleaning crew from last year to strip and wax the floors. Brett Kahl is scheduled to service the septic system on the 1 ST of May. Secretary, Glenn Nixon. I. CURRENT BUSINESS

Harbor & Grounds – Bill Calihan The growing weed population in the harbor has been an issue. We currently have two applications for weed control. One application is done early June for “Asian water mil foil.” The mid-July treatment is for “Lodea weed.” These are invasive species, and the treatments control their growth. While those treatments control June and July weed growth, the “Eel grass” weed appears towards the first of August as it matures. A third application is required to treat the “Eel grass,” but is not covered in our existing contract. These weeds grow and mature at different times according to the weather and cannot be treated with one application. The spray treatment for “Eel grass” sinks when applied and starts working on the weeds in fifteen minutes. Any residual is diluted by the surrounding water and poses very little, if any, harm to surrounding properties. Last fall an increase in the 2017 Budget for harbor weed control was approved; this will cover the additional expense. A new contract, which includes the third application, is in the mail. Plans to repair the electric panel that serves the parking lot are in process. There are a lot of electric supplies in the club house attic that will support that project. The water system will be completed this spring, and another barbecue pad will be installed near the swimming hole. Plans are progressing for the island opening work parties; they are just around the corner. Bill suggested that it would be a good idea to new have members identify any special skills on their application. This would assist board members to identify knowledgeable members when special situations occur. Membership – Kim Miedema Final Membership counts: 135 Boating, 29 Non-Boating, 46 Senior, 24 Junior, 3 Leave of Absence (LOA), and 1 Honorary for 238 total members. Sadly, we lost 19 members including 3 Junior members this year. Last month there was a question regarding number of members exempt from work hours; that number is 18 (162 people have 16-hours, and 30 have the 8-hour requirement). There are 3024 work-hours total including Juniors. Status Changes: • Nick Watson – Junior to Non-boating • Terry Schimke – Resigned • Denise Cox – Resigned – Requires a Thank You • Hanna Clinard – Expired Junior Status – Assume she is quitting • James and Lucretia Sterling – Requested 3 RD year on LOA – “Our Travel Plans for work are incomplete; we would need to continue a leave of absence if allowed” – The board discussed and will not grant a 3 RD year LOA Corrections to last month’s discussion: • Debra Jacott will continue this year as a Boating member; next year she will have Senior status. • Andrew Housey has not sent in the application fee so is not officially on the waiting list.

New Member Interviews: • Scott Goemmel was interviewed by Kim Miedema. MOTION: Moved by Kim Miedema and seconded by Scott Greenfelder to approve Scott Goemmel as a new member. Motion Carried Kim reviewed her notes, emails and tours from last year; she identified and contacted 5 interested parties. Interviews will be assigned to be completed before the next board meeting for any applications that are received. Bill Calihan receive a check and application for Michael Deneve and will be interviewed by Scott Greenfelder Publications – Ron Draper No report. Secretary – Glenn Nixon A draft work schedule was sent out for review prior to the meeting; it is in process of being finalized. A request was received to add P/C Tom McHugh to the By-Law Committee. MOTION: Moved by Glenn Nixon and seconded by Bill Calihan to amend the By-Law Committee membership to add P/C Tom McHugh. Motion Carried Supplies – Dale Hall The back-office Point of Sale (POS) training for last month was cancelled and has been rescheduled. Additional step-by-step user training videos were prepared by R/C Ian Blackburn. Dale will prepare easy quick reference cards for use behind the bar to assist those tending bar. Transportation – Darryl Campbell read by Commodore Pat Carroll Fin Number One’s (workboat) motor is nearing completion having replaced heads, camshaft, pistons and rods along with an updated oil change system and starter. Somehow the rudder had become bent last year and will be replaced with an extended version to facilitate better handling. Fin Number 3 (Stanley) may have to have the thruster sent out for repair due to improper use. A new relay/timed delay will be installed to limit thruster being engaged until the fuse fails. Darryl plans to have a fin in the water in 2 weeks. Fleet Captain – P/C Tom McHugh The dates were reiterated for the 3 rendezvous this year; they are published in the Beacon. Paid bartenders were requested for the Christmas in July so that the workers can participate in the festivities on Saturday night. Also, 11 of 26 available wells have been reserved so far for the Mac Ray rendezvous in August. II. OLD BUSINESS Incoming Rendezvous: Received an email from Ron Felder, representing a small group of boats from various clubs in Lake Erie, requesting to visit NCYC from Monday, 17 July, to Thursday, 20 July. MOTION: Moved by Scott Greenfelder and seconded by Bill Calihan to allow Ron Felder’s group from Lake Erie to visit NCYC from 17-20 July 2017. Motion Carried

Traditions Committee: An email was sent to the members of the Traditions Committee requesting input. An example of the responses received so far was read by the Commodore. The Commodore will compile the list of responses for review with the board and then send them to the Guidelines & Policy Committee to be documented and to the By-Laws Committee to make updates to eliminate contradictions. III. NEW BUSINESS Member Application Form and Process: Commodore Pat Carroll identified the need to add a 3 RD page to be added to the membership application. That page would expand on some of the information of the 2 ND page and require the applicant’s signature to ensure there is no confusion regarding basic membership expectations. V/C Randy Pagel sent an article to the board and flag regarding the fate of yacht clubs in this day and age. The article contained ideas that might help our club with regards to membership. A couple of the recommendations in the article were: • Allowing initiation fees as a monthly deduction over a period of time to defer the shock of a large up-front expense. • Installing a Pool as an amenity to attract and retain members. The board discussed the article and the recommendations, including some of the actions taken in the past to address new member fees. MOTION: Moved by Scott Greenfelder and seconded by Bill Calihan to amend the policy to allow new members to split their initiation over a two-years. Motion Carried The deadline for the second initiation payment would be February 1 ST of the following year. Further discussion regarding the details of payment method, timing and banking implications identified the need for further clarification. V/C Randy Pagel will draft recommended policy language and prepare an electronic motion to be voted on by the board prior to next meeting. MOTION: An electronic motion was made by V/C Randy Pagel to allow new members to have their Initiation fee auto-deducted from their account by NCYC over 12 equal payments. The purpose of this motion is to alleviate the burden of having to pay both the initiation and membership dues in one payment and make the economic process of joining our club easier. Through discussions with our bank, we can do this without paying fees. This motion was seconded by R/C Ian Blackburn. Motion Carried unanimously via electronic vote. By-Laws and Policy Updates: Commodore Pat Carroll discussed the need to prepare a list of controlled documents and to maintain a revision history and markings on the master documents. Secretary Glenn Nixon is updating the master By-Law document based on the changes (represented in the ballots) approved by the membership last year. The master document was cross-checked to last year’s roster for accuracy prior to editing, and the changes incorporated were reviewed by the By-Law Committee for accuracy. In the review, it was identified that a change to Article IX will be required to remove the reference to the November General Membership Meeting (re., the Forward Planning Plan presentation to the membership). The timing for the presentation of the Forward Planning Plan will take place in the October General Membership Meeting, but a By-Law change will need to be presented on the next ballot. Upon further

discussion, it was identified that there are several additional wording issues in the modifications approved by the membership; those should also be corrected on the next ballot. Additional discussion ensued for the need to establish a Change Management Policy and/or By-Law. Member of the Month None identified. Good of the Order Ron Draper discussed document storage and the need for the need for a responsible individual or committee to maintain the club’s documents. It was suggested that an Information Technology Committee would fill the need. Commodore Pat Carroll commented that a complex system may not be necessary since it is the duty of the Secretary to hold and control the club’s operating documents, and that the paper form is the controlled master. He reiterated that a list of controlled documents with revision history is needed. Ron wrapped up the discussion identifying that the use of a common cloud based storage location would preserve the club’s data and act as a means of ensuring information was transferred to new board members. Ron Draper identified that the Beacon could be shared on Facebook and may be a way to attract new members. Also, an online Roster in the form of a Flipping Book could be placed on the members only side of the website. Kim Miedema further discussed concerns with the use of Club Express, PDF documents and the need for an electronic document management system. Adjournment MOTION: Moved by TomMartin and seconded by Scott Greenfelder to adjourn the meeting. Motion Carried The meeting adjourned at 9:09 p.m. Next Meeting Date and Time: Thursday, 13 April 2017, 7:00 p.m. Location: MacRay’s.
