Europe invests to boost the uptake of robotic technologies by start-ups and SMEs

There is a clear need to stimulate European start-ups and SMEs in the robotics sector to develop novel and innovative technology with the potential to open new markets at the international level. The aim of the Robot Union acceleration program is to discover, support and fund innovative projects in the robotics industry. Robot Union will address the two major barriers that hinder the development and market uptake of robotics technologies for entrepreneurs and start-ups: the elevated setup costs and the lack of awareness of potential benefits of robotics.

This is a unique opportunity for the SMEs to use robotics and enter the world of artificial intelligence. “The Robot Union accelerator will bring the top researchers and entrepreneurs together to stimulate new robotics innovations in Europe”, says the Technical Coordinator of the project Ali Muhammad at VTT. The 20 start-ups and SMEs, selected in each of the 2 open calls, to be launched by Robot Union, will enter into an acceleration program of 6 to 12 months. Each selected company will receive up to 223,000 euros equity free for its initial funding stages.

Photonics Innovation Hub Secures €10 million To Create 750 New Hi-Tech Jobs

An innovation hub designed to help SMEs become intelligent digital businesses by taking advantage of photonics-based technologies looks set to create 750 new hi- tech jobs over the next 4 years, having secured €10 million from the EU’s H2020 programme. Aiming to support over 100 new product innovations based on photonics over the next 4 years,

products, as well as those that are already established within the photonics industry, with bespoke prototyping solutions, tailoring their new product innovation to be fit for purpose in the modern digital economy. While photonics technologies are essential to new Industry 4.0 applications like the Internet of Things (IoT), Factories of the

ACTPHAST 4.0 will leverage the R&I spend of the companies involved by 2.8 times, generate over €700 million in increased company revenues and create 750 new jobs all across Europe. The ‘one-stop-shop’ for photonics innovation support, ACTPHAST 4.0, centrally coordinated by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (University of Brussels), has secured €10 million to help drive the digitization of European industry following the success of its predecessor ACTPHAST. Short for ‘Accelerating photonics innovation for SME’s: a one stop- shop-incubator’, ACTPHAST 4.0 provides companies that are first- time users who would not normally use optics or photonics in their

Future (FoF), Smart Cities, Autonomous Vehicles, and with the need for sensors, optical fibers, special lenses, LEDs, and quantum technology, ACTPHAST 4.0 can deliver these highly specialized technologies and the critical expertise for their deployment that are often out of reach to a small to medium sized business. ACTPHAST 4.0 will continue the work of its predecessor which supported more than 100 companies and created over 700 new jobs since 2013 by providing advanced light-based solutions to knowledge-intensive companies such as Holoxica, (medical hologram imaging), LazerSport (Augmented Reality bike helmets) and TOMRA (food sorting machines).

Looking to go further by creating 750 jobs over the next four years as a direct result of their intervention, ACTPHAST 4.0 will make the transition from its current state as an access center for photonics technologies, to a full-service photonics innovation incubator for European SMEs. Game Changer ACTPHAST 4.0 differs from its predecessor in that it is an incubator for rapid prototyping of an already developed product concept that offers parallel progression of financing and business go-to- market planning. Project coordinator and managing director of the Brussels Photonics Team (BPHOT) at VUB, Professor Hugo Thienpont explains: “ACTPHAST 4.0 is a game-changer in revitalizing European manufacturing, and as one of the vital catalysts to the digitization of European industry. ACTPHAST 4.0 offers new opportunities to boost photonics innovation in Europe at a scale and with a leveraging factor that is unprecedented.” “The coaching support services for SMEs we offer are a vital complementary action running alongside the deep innovation interventions. We make sure that the companies are fully “primed” before, during and after they engage with ACTPHAST 4.0 on innovation projects related to their product so they can accelerate on all fronts towards commercial success,” Professor Thienpont said. Breaking Down Barriers The ACTPHAST 4.0 model is unique in a European context in that it is set up to provide a single entry point into a fully integrated prototyping supply chain across the broad spectrum of photonics technology platforms. In order to develop photonic-enhanced products, a complex

process requiring one or more expensive technology supply chains, including design, prototyping, characterization, manufacturing and testing, packaging and integration needs to be followed. Access to scaling-up facilities such as pilot lines, or companies who will take up the low-cost mass manufacturing of the new product can be difficult to find. “The majority of SMEs today,” central outreach coordinator, Peter Doyle said, “do not have access to experts in the business and technical aspects of innovating with photonics that can work continuously with them to incubate their particular innovation.” “The highly-skilled people that support the execution of the innovation with the most advanced photonics technology platforms are often out of reach to a small business. SMEs may not be able to take the financial risk to recruit these experts or invest in diverse technological facilities that are crucial in photonics-driven innovation processes,” said Doyle. ACTPHAST makes this cutting-edge technology and expertise available in a subsidized format to any European company – with a particular emphasis on SMEs – for the purposes of collaborating on photonics innovation projects which will have a substantial impact on the companies’ business growth in terms of new revenues and job creation. A successful SME having gone through the ACTPHAST process is HOLOXICA, a hi-tech company specializing in holographic 3D static images and video displays. CEO Dr Javid Khan explains: “ACTPHAST provided us with expertise in the development of our key component which is a holographic optical element. We needed support and ways to develop our next gen display. ACTPHAST enabled us through their network to access this technology.” “The major benefits are partnerships: I would recommend it to high tech SMEs who need to solve very specific problems in optics and photonics,” Dr Khan said. revolutionary transition to 5G.” “Cree is a strong new owner for this portion of our RF business and has an excellent reputation in the industry,” said Reinhard Ploss, CEO of Infineon. “We are excited about the business rationale and the prospects for the combined businesses. Honda to supply Power Manager units for UK energy management demonstration project

establish realistic business models to support the growth of the electric vehicle market and break new ground in helping consumers, businesses and infrastructure providers benefit financially from energy storage in electric vehicles. Evolution of the energy market Renewable energy generation in the UK is increasing, but at present

most surplus power that is generated cannot be stored. The rising uptake of electric vehicles will enable new energy storage possibilities through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems, which could be used to balance power demand across the grid. If stored

effectively, energy stored in electric vehicle batteries could be transferred between the grid, homes and back to electric vehicles when needed. This form of energy storage will have a significant role to play in the evolution of the energy market. Honda has already taken the first step in helping this vision become a reality with the development of the Power Manager unit. The system enables the collection and distribution of electricity between the grid, homes and businesses, and electric vehicles. The Power Manager units will be used to help stabilise the grid at times of either short or surplus supply and will work by aggregating and distributing energy to and from the grid through solar panel- equipped homes or workplaces, and electric vehicles. Participating customers will also have the opportunity to sell electricity back to the grid, or spare capacity in their vehicle battery, creating a financial income. Jørgen Pluym, Project Leader, Electrification & Home Energy Management for Honda Motor Europe, said: “It is exciting for Honda to be a part of the EV-elocity project, which aims to unlock new infrastructure models to support the wider and smarter use of renewable energy. As well as providing a direct benefit to the grid, this initiative will demonstrate value for consumers, as the

technology allows them to earn money from surplus energy put back into the grid. The provision of both electric vehicle and energy management to the customer is an offer unique to Honda.” Tom Harper, EV-elocity consortium lead and Head of UK Utilities for A.T. Kearney commented, “Retaining customers and broadening the range of services offered is central to a lot of energy retail strategies. IC Insights Raises 2018 IC Market Forecast from 8% to 15% IC Insights’ latest market, unit, and average selling price forecasts for 33 major IC product segments for 2018 through 2022 is included in the March Update to the 2018 McClean Report (MR18). The Update also includes an analysis of the major semiconductor suppliers’ capital spending plans for this year. 2018 unit volume growth for these product segments is expected to be up only 1% and 6%, respectively. At $99.6 billion, the DRAM market is forecast to be by far the largest single product category in the IC industry in 2018, exceeding the expected NAND flash market ($62.1

billion) by $37.5 billion. Figure 1 shows that the DRAM market has provided a significant tailwind or headwind for total worldwide IC market growth in four out of the last five years. The DRAM market dropped by 8% in 2016, spurred by a 12% decline in ASP, and the DRAM segment became a headwind to worldwide IC market growth that year instead of the tailwind it had been in 2013 and 2014. As shown, the DRAM market shaved two percentage points off of total IC industry growth in 2016. In contrast, the DRAM segment boosted total IC market growth last year by nine percentage points. For 2018, the expected five point positive impact of the DRAM market on total IC market growth is forecast to be much less significant than it was in 2017.

The biggest adjustments to the original MR18 IC market forecasts were to the memory market; specifically the DRAM and NAND flash segments. The DRAM and NAND flash memory market growth forecasts for 2018 have been adjusted upward to 37% for DRAM (13% shown in MR18) and 17% for NAND flash (10% shown in MR18). The big increase in the DRAM market forecast for 2018 is primarily due to a much stronger ASP expected for this year than was originally forecast. IC Insights now forecasts that the DRAM ASP will register a 36% jump in 2018 as compared to 2017, when the DRAM ASP surged by an amazing 81%. Moreover, the NAND flash ASP is forecast to increase 10% this year, after jumping by 45% in 2017. In contrast to strong DRAM and NAND flash ASP increases,

HARMAN and Daimler Bring the First AR-Capable Infotainment System to Market with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. A look from the inside There’s a new demographic of car buyer that’s gaining prominence. These individuals are becoming increasingly familiar with never- before-seen technology, and are diverse connoisseurs with premium tastes but mindful wallets. This leaves automakers, like Daimler, with the unique problem of innovating entry-level cars with luxurious and future-looking features while still maintaining value. On top of that, these consumers are experiencing the benefits of semi-autonomous driving now and will soon expect even more advancement out of their vehicles. One way to meet this challenge is through scalable, future-

proof technology that offers features to enhance the user experience and prepare drivers for their transition into passengers. As a long-standing strategic development partner and tier one supplier for Daimler, HARMAN, is helping the automaker accomplish this by redefining the modern compact car class with luxury driving experiences – chiefly the first-ever use of augmented reality navigation. Debuting in the next generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class as a part of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), the system combines Daimler and HARMAN technology to provide turn-by-turn directions with AR visuals to transport the navigation user interface into the digital age. “The new MBUX adds a new layer into navigation which will make life easier for the drivers”, said Ohad Akiva, Director computer-vision in

Harman who took part with his team in the development of the application. “The focus of Daimler was always on making the user life easier, so we only add the augmented reality parts in when the context is needed”. The name MBUX – Mercedes- Benz User Experience for the new infotainment system signifies that the user experience (UX) has first priority. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX can be individualised and adapts to suit the user. It thus creates an emotional connection between the vehicle and driver. Moreover, new content can be transmitted "over the air" as updates. “Our new MBUX is incredibly intelligent and tailored to your needs.” Said Daimler AG Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener, at the CES show.
