Waterproofing our fabric

We apply a Durable Water Repellent (DWR), which ensures the water rolls up and beads off the fabric, avoiding water build up.

We prevent water penetration by one of two methods; applying a durable water repellent membrane or a double coating of polyurethane (PU). Both methods ensure the garment is waterproof and breathable.

WATER REPELLENT FINISH Texpel™ Eco is an extremely water resistant fabric finish which ensures water beads up and rolls off the fabric surface. This premium eco-conscious fabric finish also repels dirt and helps prevent stains to keep your garment looking cleaner for longer.

Portwest extreme TM uses a waterproof and breathable membrane, a durable water repellent (DWR) finish on face fabric and a breathable backing fabric. These combined technologies allow moisture to escape, while preventing water penetration.

Our 300D fabrics use a double coating of polyurethane (PU) for guaranteed waterproofness. Our application process creates microscopic holes which let perspiration out but doesn’t allow water droplets in.

WATERPROOF COATINGS EXPLAINED

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a very elastic and flexible material. It is smooth to the touch and is extremely durable and strong. TPU is bonded using heat rather than chemicals. It is the toxin free choice. It has breathable options and can be used a laminate or as a coating.

Polyurethane (PU) is waterproof, strong, durable and flexible, with breathable options. It can be used as a laminate or as a coating.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is waterproof, strong and durable and is generally only used as a coating.
