Alcalá 1987

SOCCER The USD men's soccer team ended their 1986 season with a decisive win over Loyola Marymount University, climaxing thebest season ever in thehis tory of USD soccer. This year saw the Toreros improve beyond a l l ex pectations, uppingtheir record to an impressive19-4-1 (as compared with last year's 8-11-2).This season also saw USD upset such nationally ranked teams as UNLV (USD won championshiphonors at the Rebel's own tournament). Besides talent and determination,a major factor in helping to turnUSDinto a top-notch winnerwas experience, with many of the outstanding players return ing from last year, notablygoalkeeper Scott Huckleberry, defenders Mike Bisch, Sterling Pelosa. Arto Faro and Mike Histon, and forwardsBo Kaemerle and Jim Kyle. Hard recruitingpaidoff thisyear when the team acquired the best backup players seen in Torero uniforms. These are the players of next year whoalready played a large role this year. Last but not least, USDwas a winner because of the coaching. The long hours of practice and strategy em ployed by Seamus McFadden and assistant coaches Tony Daluz andHans Van de Vrugt paid off brilliantly. USDmust unfortunately sayfarewell to seniorsMike Histon, BoKaemerle, Ryan Blain, ArtFaro andMike Bisch. Thanks to all of you for a great season! Gabe Martinez
