Close Reading • Main Selection • Paired Selection • Retell Cards • Ten Important Sentences

Close Reading is an instructional practice that makes complex texts accessible using repeated reading, cognitive scaffolding and discussion. The following three questions guide teachers to develop text dependent questions that access multiple Reading Standards during a close read. • What does the text say? Standards RI & RL 1-3 • How does the text work? Standards RI & RL 4-6 • What does the text mean? Standards RI & RL 7-9 (Fisher & Frey 2014) Phonological Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the smallest segment of sound in words and is the foundation for learning phonics and spelling. (Moats, 2009) Phonics is the system that directly teaches students to use print patterns that represent sounds, syllable patterns, and meaningful word parts. (Moats 2009) Grammar rules explain how words can be used in sentences and which words can be combined. Grammar can also refer to conventions of written language. Vocabulary knowledge is highly correlated with reading comprehension and accounts for 50 + % of the variance in reading comprehension (Stahl & Nagy; 2006) Speaking and Listening standards are used to gain automaticity with the academic language needed to respond verbally and in writing. Classroom discussions allow students to engage in purposeful talk, and manage their use of academic and domain-specific language and concepts. In addition, it provides opportunities for students to learn about themselves, each other; and the world. (Fisher & Frey 2014) Close Reading and Writing: Close reading is a purposeful repeated reading targeting a reading standard, and contains discussion which engages students to change thinking and build schema. Students are then ready to respond to a well-crafted writing prompt. Close reading and writing give students purpose in reading text, discussing text and writing about text. Consequently, standards-based writing assignments are ELA performance assessments.
