ELA DISTRICT-WIDE WRITING ASSESSMENT Considerations for Educators Gr ades 1-5 take a District-wide Standards-based Writing Assessment (DWSBA). The assessment dates are represented on the table below and on the assessment calendar. All secure prompts can be found in the DWSBA Google Shared Drive for your grade level. Can teachers model and provide further explanation during testing?

Teachers deliver the ELA District-wide Standards-based Assessment (DWSBA) by using the standardized directions [Teacher Administration Manual (TAM)]. Modeling and scaffolding for learners can be done during regular instruction. Can teachers provide word banks, sentence frames, graphic organizers or other supports? The standardized directions (TAM) provide the supports needed to give the assessment. This is a formative assessment to identify how students are progressing with writing and if any additional instruction may be needed. What accommodations should I allow with students on an IEP or ELL? Accommodation decisions for ELL or students on an IEP, are left up to the school site with consultation from the school’s SST or leadership team. The recommended time for the ELA Writing DWSBA is approximately 60-90 minutes. Students may take more or less time to complete the task. Use professional discretion to evaluate if more or less time needs to be given. Students should be allowed to finish to the best of their ability, and should not be pressured to spend more time on the task which may not change the student’s score. If a student requests, teachers may reread portions of the text individually, without emphasis definition or explanation, at any point during the testing session. Should a student make-up the Writing DWSBA if they are absent? The goal is to assess all students and students should have the opportunity to be assessed. If the situation and resources are not available for assessment after the session is missed, the best alternative might be to not assess the student. Please make these decisions at your school site with your school leadership. Where will the data be housed? Teachers will enter the data on Skyward and the data will be accessed on CSD’s Data Dashboard. Do students type or handwrite on the DWSBA? Please see the table below for your grade level specifics and follow the recommendations for CSD keyboarding expectations. The DWSBA is a formative assessment and can be used to support a student as an assessment capable learner. Reviewing the rubric and the score with a student is best practice. However, due to the secure testing, do not send home any prompts or materials, only responses. If you have more questions, please ask your principal.

• Follow the Teacher

Administration (TAM) for standardization.

• Check the assessment

calendar for the ELA DWSBA window.

• Enter data in

Skyward for data to appear on Data Dashboard.

• Use the data formatively to

guide next steps with instruction.

• Using rubrics during instruction, as they are not secure, is best practice. • Grade-level teams should calibrate scores in IPLCs and collaborate for scoring questions.
