Number Talks High Quality Implementation Checklist *Number Talks should occur 5-10 minutes of every day to build number sense.

Number Talks build numbers sense which is an awareness and understanding about what numbers are, their relationships, their magnitude, the relative effect of operating on numbers, including the use of mental mathematics and estimation. (Fennell and Landis 1994) Before the Number Talk: □ Teacher builds a cohesive classroom environment built on mutual respect where students feel safe to offer responses for discussion □ Teacher purposefully plans Number Talks to include number strings, a series of problems, focused on specific mathematical relationships, skills or concepts During the Number Talk: □ Students have think time (no more than 1 minute) to determine their own solution □ Students use a hand signal to show they are ready to share with the whole group □ Students discuss with a partner their solution: Partner A first, then Partner B and vice versa using a sentence frame prepared by the teacher □ Teacher facilitates a share out, asking students to individually share different strategies □ The share out begins with the opportunity for students to decide whether the proposed solution is reasonable □ Student shares the strategy as it is documented visually on the board □ Teacher asks questions to help students make connections between the different solutions and strategies □ Repeat the process with 1-2 connected number strings After the Number Talks: □ Teacher creates anchor charts to hang in the classroom that display the various student strategies that hit the specific target of the Number Talk □ Students are sitting on the carpet □ Teacher poses number talk problem
