McGraw Hill Grade 4 Unit 2: Using Energy Module: Natural Resources in the Environment

TOTAL TIME: 400 MIN About 2 Weeks

Lesson 1: Energy from Nonrenewable Resources Lesson 2: Energy from Renewable Resources

Lesson 3: Impact of Energy Use Lesson 4: Design Energy Solutions

STRAND: CYCLING OF MATTER IN AN ECOSYSTEM Matter cycles within ecosystems and can be traced from organism to organism. Plants use energy from the Sun to change air and water into matter needed for growth. Animals and decomposers consume matter for their life functions, continuing the cycling of matter. Human behavior can affect the cycling of matter. Scientists and engineers design solutions to conserve Earth’s environments and resources. STANDARD 5.3.4 Evaluate design solutions whose primary function is to conserve Earth’s environments and resources. Defne the problem, identify criteria and constraints, analyze available data on proposed solutions, and determine an optimal solution. Emphasize how humans can balance everyday needs (agriculture, industry, and energy) while conserving Earth’s environments and resources. (ESS3.A, ESS3.C, ETS1.A, ETS1.B, ETS1.C) CONCEPTS SKILLS ● Conserve Earth’s environments and resources. ● Evaluate ● Design solutions LEARNING PROGRESSIONS 1. Explore what happens to natural resources when they are not replaced. 2. Investigate the daily costs of using a variety of electric appliances. 3. Explore how renewable resources can be replenished over time. 4. Investigate ways to clean up an oil spill. 5. Investigate whether the number of blades on a windmill has an effect on how fast a windmill can lift an object. VOCABULARY
