Reflections on a Rummage Sale I t was a bright, beautiful day in the city of San Jose, California: certainly ideal for the bustling activity in our church parking lot. Rummage Sale! Our church people were excited, and neighborhood folks were stop- ping by. Truthfully, these events do not particularly excite me, but I usually put in my token pastoral appearance. (I always feel, somehow, church people just transfer rum- mage from one family’s garage to another hapless fami- ly’s carport.) I strolled with interest from one table to another. I like the tables that have used books. Stopping at one, I skimmed over the titles. My eyes fell on a certain book, and I knew instantly I must have the book! The title bore the name of a man who has become synonymous with prayer and faith. Next to Paul and other biblical person- ages, this man is probably referred to in Christian period- icals, books, and sermons more than any other person. I
