Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics The University of San Diego athletic department has a new Director. Tom Iannacone as- sumed the position Septmber 1, 1988 after a nation-wide search for a successor to Rev. Patrick Cahill. The 47-year-old Iannacone comes to the Un iversity of San Diego with an impressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercolleg iate athletics. He spent the past three years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania as the Director of Athletics. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholar- sh ips for both men and women , improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilit ies, the hiring of add itional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual develop- ment of athletics. He served on several ECAC Metro Conference committees, most notably the committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and im- plemented the position for a full-time commissioner.

Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his admin istrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach fo r the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Atlantic Ath letic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Ridgefield , Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coach ing debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children : Tom Jr. , Jennifer and Eric.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean . The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i .e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural , residential , and recreational areas, as well as the rail , bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3,400, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5,600. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration , Education , Nursing , and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing , crew, yoga, karate, surfing , modern dance, backpacking , and ballet. USD 's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball , football , basketball , cross-country, golf, soccer, crew and tennis. In women's intercollegiate sports, USO fields programs in basketball , cross-country, crew, softball , swimming , tennis, and volleyball.

Head Coach Brian Fogarty The 1988 season will mark the sixth year for Brian Fogarty at USO. There have been many positive changes during that time. The most important being a shift to primarily high school recruiting. The past five recruiting years have included the largest and most talented freshman classes in 15 years of Division Ill football at USO. Brian and his staff feel this provides for a more consistent program. Last year's squad finished with a record of 6-3-1 and a national ranking of 20th in NCAA Division Ill football. With approximately 40 returning let- termen for the 1988 season, the immediate future of Torero football looks very bright. Brian's five year record at USO is 21-27-2. Before coming to USO, Brian coached at St. Francis High School in La Canada, California where he was head coach for four years and an assistant coach for nine years prior. As head coach his record was 28-18-2 and his teams made the playoffs all four years. This season Brian will also coordinate the special teams and coach the quarterbacks. Brian and his wife Vicki have four children, Bridgit, Joe, Colleen and Megan.

USD Football Profile Five years ago, we set a goal to develop a football program that would be consistently competitive and also reflect the values of the University of San Diego. In order to reach this goal, we must attract student athletes who are truly interested in an outstanding education and have the ability and desire to continue their football career. Most of our recruiting efforts have been at the high school level. We feel that the ma- jority of our players should be four year players if we are to develop the consistency we hope to achieve. It has taken some time, but we feel our youth move- ment is about to pay off. Our 1988 roster includes 40 lettermen and 14 starters. The majority of these starters have been starting for two and three years. We have also done well on the academic side. Our team GPA over the past two years has been approx- imately a 2.8. Last season we had a First Team Academic All-American. We are an NCAA Division Ill independent. Division Ill football provides an opportunity for the many outstanding athletes who may not have what the "major" colleges are looking for. They still can't measure a player's desire. At USO, your education is the top priority. We work hard, but do not require an unreasonable amount of time. This provides you with the fun and satisfaction of playing football and the opportunity to do well academically. We are very proud of our program at USO and we are looking forward to many successful years.

INTRODUCING THE FOOTBALL STAFF KEVIN McGARRY Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs LARRY CAUDILLO Offensive Coordinator and Running Backs

Kevin begins his 11th season on the USD staff. This will be his 7th as the defensive coordinator. In addition to his on the field duties, Kevin is also responsible for re- cruiting and is the liaison for the Alumni Club. Kevin was a standout player at

Larry begins his 14th year on the USD football staff. He will be returning to the offensive coordi- nator position after four years as special teams coordinator. In ad- dition to his on the field duties, Larry is responsible for all equip- ment purchases and supervision of equipment personnel. In the spring, Larry is the women's softball coach . Larry is also an alumnus of USD and played both football and baseball in the early 1970s.

MIKE RISH Wide Receivers

Tim returns for his 3rd season on the USD defensive staff. After coaching the linebackers for a season , Tim moved to the defen- sive line last year. A graduate of Northern Arizona University, Tim coached at the high school and college level prior to coming to USD.

Mike is beginn ing his 5th season as the receiver coach for the Toreros. Mike played for USD from 1979-83 and is the all-time career leader in receptions, touchdowns and receiving yardage. Mike graduated from USD with an accounting degree and is work- ing full time as a mortgage bank- ing executive. GEORGE HARTMAN Linebackers George begins his 2nd season as the Torero linebacker coach . Prior to USD, George was the founder and head coach of the Saddleback College football pro- gram where he compiled a record of 58-10-4. He is still on the faculty at Sad- dleback College and teaches health education . DAVE SMOLA Offensive Line Dave returns for his 2nd year as a student coach at USD. He played offensive line at USD du r- ing the 1984 and 1985 seasons. Dave will assist with the offensive line as well as running the scout teams. Dave is a graduate assistant working on his master's degree in history. CARLOS LEON

Jack is in his 4th season at USD. A very good teacher of fun- damentals, Jack will be working with the outside linebackers.

A San Diego native, Jack grad- uated from USD in 1979 with a B.A. in Social Science. He has an extensive background in high school coaching in both football and baseball. He presently works full time at General Dynamics.

RANDY MASTIN Offensive Line

We are very fortunate to add Randy to our offensive staff. He has been a line coach at Walla Walla Community College for the last three years. Randy was a two-time WAC defensive player of the week as a San Diego State gridiron performer. He will be as- sisted by Dave Smola, a former

1988 TORERO FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

Optimism reigns at Alcala Park as the 1988 Toreros, coming off their best season since 1981, prepare for another successful season. Last year's squad completed the '87 season with a 6-3-1 record and finished ranked 20th nationally among Division Ill foot- ball teams. Out of the approximately 40 returning players from last season, 16 of those are returning starters and 8 have been starting for at least two years. This coupled with a great recruiting year should provide the Toreros with enough depth to maintain their position as one of the top programs in Division Ill football. The 1988 offense returns a good nucleus to pick up where they left off last season. The offensive line was hit hardest by graduation; however, those returning from last year are ready to step in and take over. Leading the way will be senior guard Mike Cassady (6-1 , 225) and junior tackle Mark Garcia (6-1, 260). These two returning starters will be joined by sophomore Ray Smith (6-2, 255), junior Neal Curry (6-3, 235), junior Jeff Carpenter (5-10, 236) and senior David King (6-1 , 220). The receiving corps returns a lot of experience. Ken Zampese (5-7, 190) has been one of the Toreros' best receivers over the last

three seasons. He is also a very dangerous punt/kick return specialist. Pushing for more playing time this campaign will be junior Sam McDermott (5-11, 185), sophomore Ken Jones (6-1, 185) and junior Marvin Harrison (5-10, 175). All saw plenty of action last year. The tight end position looks strong again with David Nottoli (6-2, 220) returning for his senior year, and newcomers Greg Fox (€-3, 195) and Brad Leonard (6-3, 180) battling for playing time. Several running backs played last year and all will be coming back. The tailback position returns senior Virgil Enriquez (5-9, 170) and sophomore Ty Barksdale (5-8, 175). Both started at different times last year and are expected to carry the load again this season. The fullback position will be anchored down by junior Todd Jackson (5-11, 200). Todd was the leading ground gainer for USD last season with 405 yards and 4 touchdowns. He will be pushed by sophomore Pat Hefler (5-10, 185) and newcomer Charlie Taumoepeau (5-10, 212). The quarterback position will be handled by sophomore Brendan Murphy (6-1, 185). This quick footed quarterback won the starting position half way through his freshman year and hopes to improve on last year's numbers (52 of 109 for 769 yards and 8 TD's). The Torero defense returns 9 starters from last year's nationally ranked defensive unit. From the first to the last game the USD defense was ranked in the nation's top 10. The defense will be spearheaded by All-America candidate Bryan Day (5-11, 185). Day, who garnered First Team Academic All-America honors in 1987, returns for his senior campaign after leading the defense in six categories last year from his free safety position, including tackles (91) and interceptions (6). He will be joined by sophomores Chris King (5-10, 175) and Darryl Jackson (5-10, 175), both of whom started at corner last year. Looking to round out the secondary will be Mark Crisci (5-10, 185), Matt Scholl (5-10, 189), Pat St. Peter (5-10, 180) and Scott Bradley (5-11, 165).

The linebacker group will have a new look this season. A key loss is senior Jeff Merlino due to a back injury. Top returners include inside backers Frank Love (6-3, 220) and Shawn Rezaian (5-11 , 205); outside backer Matt Haniger (6-1 , 195); and newcomers to the position, former quarterback Braulio Castillo (6-1, 216) and former running back Don Macinnes (6-1 , 210). The strongest area of the defense will be the defensive line. Three starters return from the '87 squad. Seniors John Gomez (6-1 , 223) and David Gilmore (6-3, 240), along with junior Dave Dunn (6-0, 237), will be the mainstay of the Torero front five. They will be spelled by two sophomores who saw plenty of time as fresh- men, Leroy Hughes (6-0, 245) and Rory Aitken (6-0, 215), as well as junior Scott Slykas (5-11 , 205). The punting and kicking chores will be handled by two sophomores. John Gillis will return for his second season as the starting punter after setting a single season Torero record for most punts with 65 (33.4 yard average). Jim Morrison wi ll handle the field goal and kicking duties. It has been a successful off season with all the players working hard to get ready for the 1988 campaign. That along with ex- perience and attitude combine for great opportunity in the upcom- ing 1988 season.

USO TORERO STADIUM USO Torero Stadium was built in 1955, to provide stu- dents the opportunity to play intercollegiate football and other outdoor sports. Set in a natural bowl, the stadium has 4,000 permanent seats located behind the home side of the field. The seats are set in cement and consist of aluminum bleachers. Thanks to the National Football League, USO received a new field in 1987, consisting of Santa Ana Bermuda grass, along with many improvements to the fieldhouse. Torero Stadium was the practice site for the Washington Redskins, the 1988 Super Bowl Champions. There is a four-foot wall surrounding the playing surface that was built in 1976, in order to keep the field free from potential mud slides. At the open end of the stadium is the scoreboard, which was generously donated by the Pepsi Cola Bottling Com- pany of San Diego. Located above the stands are the restrooms, the football office, the men's locker room and the press box. The University of San Diego hopes you enjoy your visit to the USOTorero Stadium and that you will be back soon.

THE COACHES: USD head coach Brian Fogarty i s now in his sixth season at San Diego, and he has compiled a 24- 29-2 record to date. Dale Widol ff is in his seventh season at Occidental and he carries a 47-16- 2 record into tonight's fray. THE SERIES : The USD- OXY overall series is tied at 7-7-1 with the tie coming last season (13-13). USD ' s last victory over the Tigers came in 1981 when the Toreros bested Oxy 38-13 . USD coach Brian Fogarty will be searching for his first victory against the Tigers. THE TOREROS : Upped their record to 3- 2 with a convincing 21-6 vic t ory at Whittier College this past Saturday • . . Football As It Should Be By Wayne Lockwood The San Diego Union Sunday, November 15, 1987

Back there near the dawn of time - before television, in other words - maybe it was all like this. If it wasn't, maybe it should have been. Maybe what college football should be is what it was yesterday when the University ' of San Diego played host to Menlo College in a game promising the winner entry into Maybe it should be bleachers so close to the field you can recognize the players by their faces, not their program numbers. Maybe it should be admission prices of $4 and $2. Maybe it should be seniors hugging their parents at midfield as they are introduced before the final game of their careers. Maybe it should be games that start five minutes early because, hey, everybody's ready, so why not? Maybe it should be business economic majors and English majors knocking the heck out of each other for 60 minutes and then milling around together on the field for a half-hour afterward, along with family, friends and classmates who actually know these people. Maybe those Division Ill folks remember something about college football that the rest of us have forgotten, or never knew. This was college football, make no mistake about that. There was hitting and intensity and a lot of people who wanted to win very badly. the NCAA's Division 111 playoffs. Maybe it should be, well, fun.

There was elation on a Menlo team that did, 17-15, and was probably just that much better. There was dismay on a Toreros club that kept hanging on and hanging on and might have snatched the game away if it could have gotten its hands on the ball one more time. Maybe the players weren't as big or as fast as those at Oklahoma and Miami. But none of them backed off, either, and every one knew his way to the library. " Maybe the people in the stands or in the press might see a difference,'' said USD wide receiver Jeff Mansukhani. " But to the players who are out here playing, it's football, just like the football they play everywhere else. This is like the Super Bowl to us. We play because we love the game." Toreros safety Bryan Day has a world view befitting a business economics major with a 3.9 grade-point average. But that doesn't mean he enjoys losing any more than the next guy. " I'll probably remember this game all my life,'' Day said. " It was a big game for us, a chance to go to the playoffs, and we didn't win. That hurts." Mansukhani and Day are worth studying for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that they were their team's best players, offensively and defensively, in this game. Mansukhani, a senior wide receiver, caught passes of 15 and 26 yards to set up USD's first touchdown and caught consecutive throws of 31 and 21 yards to account for all the yardage on the Toreros' second scoring drive. " He's just a fierce competitor,'' said USD coach Brian Fogarty. "When you need the big catch, he's there." Unfortunately, this year the ball often has not been. Mansukhani, who caught 49 passes for 811 yards and seven touchdowns last year, had only 13 catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns in 1987 before breaking loose yesterday. " For three years, he was the man because we threw the ball a lot,'' Fogarty said. "This year, we just weren't capable of doing that, and he had to take a back seat. But he handled it well." He handled it as well as he handles the books, in other words. Mansukhani, an English major with a business minor, was a second-team Academic All-American last season. " I've thought about what it might have been like to go to a Division I school,'' he said. "There were several bigger schools who offered me a chance to walk on and maybe earn a scholarship." But Mansukhani opted for USD, a $3,290-per-semester decision, not including room, board and books. "This just seemed like a place where I might play and get a good education,'' he said. "It seemed appealing. I've never regretted the decision." Day, a junior safety, was everywhere for the Toreros on defense yesterday, as he has been most of the season. The team's leading tackler also intercepted a pass (his sixth), forced a fumble (his third) and blocked a field-goal attempt. Most impressive, however, is the fact that Day seems likely to join Mansukhani as an Academic All-American. "Some bigger schools were interested in me, but they came and saw my size and decided I wasn't big enough,'' said Day, who is 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds. " I wanted to go on playing, so here I am. I'm glad." After all, there are trade-offs for paying your own way. "You don't have as much pressure to perform,'' Day said. "You're not on scholarship. You know everyone out here wants to play, because there's no other reason to be here. " I think that makes it better. These guys want to play football." They want to win, too, which is why the Toreros were no happier than any other losing team in America yesterday. But the pain will pass, eventually. A good education and good friends will not. 19
