UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO v s , OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE THE MATCH- UP: The Toreros carry a 3- 2 record into the contest tonight after they beat Whittier College last weekend 21-6 , The Oxy Tigers ran their record to 4- 1 on the season after destroying Pomona-Pitzer College 70- 16. THE COACHES: USD head coach Brian Fogarty i s now in his sixth season at San Diego, and he has compiled a 24- 29-2 record to date. Dale Widol ff is in his seventh season at Occidental and he carries a 47-16- 2 record into tonight's fray. THE SERIES : The USD- OXY overall series is tied at 7-7-1 with the tie coming last season (13-13). USD ' s last victory over the Tigers came in 1981 when the Toreros bested Oxy 38-13 . USD coach Brian Fogarty will be searching for his first victory against the Tigers. THE TOREROS : Upped their record to 3- 2 with a convincing 21-6 vic t ory at Whittier College this past Saturday • . . USD scored on their first possession in the fir st quarter as QB Doug Piper found WR Ken Jones open in the endzone for a 5- yard TD reception • .. prior t o the TD , USD ' s good field position was set up when Torero l inebacker Fr ank Love pounced on a Whit tier fumble at the Torero 14-yard line . .. San Diego ' s second TD came in the 2nd quarter as TB Virgil Enriquez completed a 10- pl ay, 83-yard drive with a 3- yard TD rush at the 6 : 44 mark (it was Virgil's first TD rush of the season) • . . the Toreros fina l score also came in the 2nd quarter as Ty Barksdale threw to Mike Hintze for a 19- yard TD with 1: 50 to go in the half (the TD pass was the r esult of a s u ccessful faked 47-yard FG by kicker Jim Morrison as Barksdale took the snap and rolled to the right and found Hintze wide open up the right sideline) • . . kicker Jim Morrison was 3-for-3 in PAT's on the evening . . . Whittier f inally got on the scoreboard at the 8 : 36 mark of the final quarter as QB Michael Haney found WR Michael Hernandez for a 26- yard TD completion .. . the Torero defense was outstanding again as they held Whittier to - 18 yards rushing on 42 attempts •.. USD sacked Whi ttier quarterbacks twelve times for - 91 yards (led by NG Dave Dunn' s 3 sacks for -25 yards ) •.. Whittier finished with 91 yards of total offense on 70 plays •.. ILB Frank Love took over the lead in tackl es for the season (44) as he totaled 10 against the Poe ts . . . besides hi s 3 QB sacks, Dave Dunn a l so totaled 10 tackles for the game • .. ILB Shawn Rezai an had his best game of the season as he finished with 9 t ackles, 1 sack (-13 yards) , 1 deflected pass and 1 QB hurry . .. after five games the Toreros rushing def·ense i s allowing jus t 60. 2 yar ds per game •.. offensively for the Toreros QB Doug Piper finished 7-for-10 for 88 yards and 1 TD • . . Sam McDermott (23 yards), Dave Nottoli (29 yards) and Mike Hintze (45 yards) all had two receptions .. . TB Ty Barksdale was the leading ground gainer with 43 yards on 9 carries •.. the Toreros held Whittier to 20 yards of offense in the first half i n taking their 21-0 lead into the locker room . THE TI GERS : Off to a 4-1 start this season . . . opened season with a 13-17 loss to Azusa Pacific ... since then have won four straight with wins over Redlands (10-0) , Claremont (29-0) , La Verne (19-13) , and Pomona (70-16) •.. before the Pomona game the Tigers were ranked 6th in the western region for NCAA Division III football teams . . . the Tigers totaled 527 yards of offense against Pomona , including 451 yds on the ground .. . RB Kevin Vegas carried the ball 20 times for 203 yds and 4 TD ' s (he went into the game with 202 yds on 41 rushes) • . . QB Tony Werbelow was 6-for-6 for 72 yds and 2 TD ' s against Pomona and his season totals include 31-of-44 passing for 407 yds , 5 TD 's and O intercepions . .. FB George Conahey carried the ball 14 times against Pomona for 105 yds and 1 TD and his season totals include 343 yds and 3 TD's on 24 carries ... the defense is anchored by a trio of linebackers, sophomore Larry Schatz, iunior David Hodges a nd senior Tim Swanson , NEXT WEEK : The Toreros travel to La Verne for a 1:30 kickoff on Sat . , Oc t ober 29th.
