A Decade on the Green: 10 th Annual MSA Golf Scramble

T he Maine Snowmobile Association celebrated a major milestone on June 27, 2026, as golf ers gathered at Hermon Meadow Golf Club in Hermon for the 10th Annual MSA Golf Scramble. For ten years, this popular summer event has brought together snowmobilers, club members, business partners and friends for a day filled with friendly competition, plenty of laughs and the shared camaraderie that makes Maine’s snow mobiling community so special. While snow and groomed trails may have been months away, the enthusiasm and competitive spirit of the snowmobiling community were on full display throughout the tournament. Teams took to the course ready to compete for top honors in both the Open Division and the Club Cup Division. With just a few strokes sep arating the leading teams, every drive, chip and putt mattered.

Open Division The competition in the Open Division was espe cially close, with only two strokes separating the top three teams. Capturing first place with an impressive score of 57 were Cooper Marden, Steve Marden, Colby Snell and Brandon Solek. Their strong perfor mance earned them the top spot by just one stroke. Finishing close behind in second place with a score of 58 were Andy Pierce, John Penner, Brady Hurd and Anthony Moore. Rounding out the top three was the team of Jason Peasley, John Wickenden, Wes Butler and Kyle Peterson, who finished with a score of 59. Congratulations to all three teams on an out standing showing and an exciting finish!

Continued on Page 2

Club Cup Division The Club Cup Division also featured a great day of competition as teams competed for bragging rights and the honor of taking home the Club Cup title. Claiming first place with a score of 67 were Keith Dean, Glen Dean, Pete Albert and Dave Dionne.Their teamwork and steady play carried them to the top of the Club Cup standings. Finishing in second place with a score of 69 were Paul McCarty, Mark Blanchett, Dylan Blanchett and Phil Wacome. The team of Corey MacDonald, Bernard Howlett, Josh Howlett and Jake Howlett secured third place with a score of 72. The Club Cup competition is always a highlight of the tournament, offering another opportunity for snowmobile club members to come together, repre sent their clubs and enjoy some good-natured com petition away from the trails.

Contest Winners In addition to the team competition, golfers had the opportunity to test their individual skills in special contests held during the day. Keith Stoddard earned the Most Accurate Shot award, demonstrating that precision can be just as important on the golf course as it is when navigating a snowmobile trail. Tyler Shanklin claimed the Putting Contest victory and took home the $100 prize. The contest added even more excitement to an already action-packed day.

ThankYou to Our Sponsors An event like the MSA Golf Scramble would not be possible without the businesses and organizations that generously support the Maine Snowmobile Association and Maine’s snowmobiling community. The MSA extends a very special thank-you to the Hole-In-One sponsors of the 10th Annual Golf Scramble: • Darling’s • Bangor Motorsports • ChaseToys • Coop’sTruck Equipment Their generosity and continued support helped make this milestone tournament a success. We encourage MSA members and snowmobilers throughout Maine to support the businesses that support our associa tion and our sport.

The MSA would also like to thank Hermon Meadow Golf Club for hosting the tournament, along with the volunteers, organizers, golfers and supporters who contributed their time and energy to the event. The annual Golf Scramble is about much more than scores and trophies. It provides an opportunity for people from across the snowmobiling community to reconnect during the off-season, strengthen friend ships and celebrate the volunteers and businesses that keep snowmobiling moving forward in Maine. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, and thank you to everyone who helped make the 10th Annual MSA Golf Scramble a memorable celebra tion. After a decade of great golf, spirited competi tion and lasting friendships, we are already looking forward to the next one!

From The Executive Board

From the President

I am starting this piece by sending my condolences to Al Swett and his family. Al’s mother passed away in late August. The MSA family wants you to know we are here for you. Welcome to the 2026-2027 season everyone! I am excited and a little nervous to be in this new position. After 20 plus years as the Eastern VP, moving up the Executive VP is a big step for me. I want to thank Matt Stedman for having the confidence in me to ask if I would be willing to take on a new role. I also want to thank everyone who encouraged me to do this and expressed their support to me. It means a great deal to me to know I have your support. As I adjust to new responsibilities as well as new duties I will continue to be available to clubs as need be. I want ALL CLUBS statewide to know I am here to listen to what you have to say as well as suggestions from you. If your club would like to have me attend a meeting, function, event or whatever, please There is a lot to our sport that goes unnoticed. So many people work throughout the year to make the limited season happen for the 80,000 or so registered snowmobilers every year. To the thousands of us who are involved in local clubs and/or the MSA we understand the dedication it takes. When you have the opportunity, let someone who is not as involved know what it takes. There is a great need across Maine for additional volunteer hours in all aspects of club work. Make sure to highlight that as you talk to businesses, snowmobilers & community members. I would ask that you bring someone who is not as involved as you are to the next gins retired on July 31, 2026. Joe was a stead fast, passionate supporter of what we do. We wish him the best in his next chapter. The hir ing process is underway, and we should soon find out who his replacement will be. We worked through the summer on our MSA Trails app to further enhance the platform and correct some minor issues, and our second sea son should be better than ever. We are focused on continuous improvement and education. Our vendor was extremely impressed with our first-year numbers. The app was downloaded more than 14,000 times, with about 5,500 users opting for the PRO version. We hope to collect the remaining club data this year. We have approximately 2,500 miles of trails to incorporate into the app. Also, remember that we can add your local gas stations, lodging properties, clubhouses, and restaurants—we just need the information. Club and municipal grant packets should have reached your mailboxes by now. While they are not due until December it’s always an advantage to submit them in early, espe cially this year with a new director at the State Snowmobile Office. The sooner you get approved the earlier you can start your actual work hours and projects. I know conditions were very dry last September and made for easy bush hogging which worked well with my Sept 23 rd grant date. Enjoy the last days of summer and embrace the cooler air of fall. Brent into action. I would urge clubs to look on the MSA website or Facebook page for the links to our monthly Director’s Meetings. You can join via zoom through your phone or computer, either by dialing in or connecting through the web. It is a way to have your voice heard. Club directors can bring up new business and vote on motions brought forward. If you are not currently a club director, you can still attend the meetings and listen to what’s going on across the state. Until 5 years ago you would have had to travel across the state to participate – But not anymore. We tend to have the same group on the call & in person. I know there are clubs that have needs or concerns, this is your opportunity. We also hold regional directors’ meetings around the State throughout the season. Please see the schedule of events for the planned dates, locations and regions the meetings will be. If a meeting is not how you would like to connect with MSA folks, reach out to your regional director or regional VP to get connected locally.

club, regional or directors meeting. Show people the community of riders & volunteers we have and see if they want to join this great team. The leadership team at MSA looks forward to working with your club through the coming season. We have a great team of volunteer’s, regional directors & VP’s spread around the State. We also have a great office manager & director of operations based in Augusta. All of them are dedicated to helping you and your club navigate the business of running your club. We are always looking to add to our volunteer team in events, committees, regional directors or trail inspectors. If you are interested, please reach out and we’ll connect you with the right person. If you are not currently a club or MSA member, we need you! Please reach out where you live or ride and connect with a club today. The future of our sport relies on passionate snowmobilers like you to take on some part of what a handful in each community does today. Our clubs have volunteers, many of them built the clubs we see & recognize today and are still making it happen. They need your help, they need your time, they need your energy, they need your knowledge, they need you to take action. If there is something you are looking for that has not been answered, reach out and ask. Start locally by contacting your regional MSA director or vice president. It is very likely that no one person will have every answer, but we have a great network from which we can gather information. feel free to contact me and I will make every effort possible to attend. I realize I will not be able to make everything, but I also admit there are places in the state I have not been to. There are some exciting changes coming this year. With a tremendous amount of work from Bob Flagg and Lori Hemmerdinger, MSA is implementing a new online membership program. This is something many clubs have asked for and now it is available. It will be a learning curve for all of us, but one that will make membership submission easier for everyone, clubs and members. We ask that you be patient with the system as we all learn how it works and know we are all learning at the same time. Since April I have attended a meeting in Rangeley with Matt. It was good to meet people in the area, as I haven’t spent time in Western Maine. I have been involved in the reorganization of the MSA Scholarship Fund committee, worked with Bob, Lori and Matt on the new MSA Connect membership

H ello, fellow snowmobile club members! I hope you have all had a good summer, were able to spend time with family and friends, and maybe thought about the work of snowmobiling a bit less than you do during the fall & winter months. I am humbled and excited to be in the president’s role and am looking forward to meeting more of you over the coming season. MSA folks have been busy throughout the summer. Updating documents, meeting to discuss ideas, putting together the super raffle (early), prepping for the fall show, talking with state officials, working on the new digital membership platform, planning events…the list goes on. If you talk to someone this winter who says they wish the season lasted all year long, let them know it can be - they just need to become more involved! Put your passion

Clubs received their club packets, Super Raffle tickets, and other information. With the Powersports Show coming up quickly we are looking for volunteers to assist at the Show. If you would like to donate a few hours, please contact the MSA office. The expansion of the show to the outside means we need more volunteers to cover that area. With the State House quiet, I’m working with MSA leadership to continue developing our advocacy goals with partner organiza tions, on issues like the Land Use Planning Commission’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan, on staffing changes at the state snow mobile program, and the implementation of snowmobile registration fee changes that will become effective next summer. There is no question that lots of issues are heading our way once the Legislature begins their work in earnest starting in January. We will have brand new committees of jurisdic tion on the IFW and ACF Committees, and we will be sure to build strong relationships with members of legislative leadership and the Appropriations Committee as well! If you have ideas for new legislation, or any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself or MSA leadership any time so that we have time to discuss in advance of the legisla tive session. Every year, we look for nominations from clubs that believe they have someone who rep resents the spirit of snowmobiling in the state of Maine—someone who has helped your club get where it is today. Nominees may be recognized for trail work, building community relations, or completing an extraordinary snowmobiling adventure, such as the Alaska-to-Maine trio nominated last year. Consider what your members have accomplished throughout your club’s history and whether their contributions make them worthy of recognition in the Hall of Fame. Send your nominations to the MSA office, and the committee will review them and make its recommendations for induction into the Hall of Fame. Thank you for your support, Gail Ryan, Chairperson H i everyone,

season. Working on another regional director’s meeting in the Dexter Wassookeag club. Standing Committee Reports: Funding- Had bill pass about the tiered registration that will go into effect in 2027. So early registration will stay what it is now and after December 15th will increase. We would like as many clubs to take the survey as possible so changes can be made to get the grant more accessible to motorized clubs. Planning a Q&A session on Friday night at the show in October with several ambassadors available to answer questions and help get maximum funding for the clubs. Don’t forget there are other grants available as well and to put in for as many as possible. Safety: Al not present to give a report. Trails: Brent things are gearing up had first meeting already. Still going to do the paper map and the app. Coburn is down to a one man show and getting some surrounding clubs to help out with grooming. wore many hats throughout his long-standing tenure to the MSA. I am currently seeking two additional MSA Regional Directors to keep the Eastern Region at the top of the MSA structure. Sorry, Jerry M.! Please reach out to me if you are inter ested. I would be happy to answer any ques tions you may have. These positions are both interesting and rewarding. I look forward to attending as many club meetings, functions, and events as possible throughout the season. I am equally excited to meet fellow snowmobilers along the way. A few additional items for your atten tion: MSA packets are starting to be deliv ered to club presidents and trailmasters. It’s very important to open them and review the contents. They contain valuable informa tion, including changes designed to improve efficiency and reduce some of the mundane and tedious tasks clubs face. Please feel free to reach out to your Regional Directors, Regional Vice Presidents, or the MSA office for assistance. Many thanks to Charlie Huntington for organizing a regional meeting at the North ern Maine Timber Cruisers Snowmobile Club in Millinocket on Tuesday, September 22, at 7:00 p.m. Clubs should receive an invitation. Please attend if you can, and bring your ques tions and ideas. Your participation and input are valued by all. Craig Lemieux is working with Andrew Mitchell of the Wassookeag Snowmobile Club in Dexter to host a similar meeting. Details will be announced once they are finalized. We also hope to hold the same type of meet ing in Gary Dowling’s Downeast area. This would provide a great opportunity to meet and connect with more of you. I’m looking for ward to working alongside all of you toward our common goals. Thank you for all that you Doo! Barry Safety rules are there to protect us. Acci dents happen quickly and can be life-chang ing, so please take the time to work safely. Weatherproof safety posters are avail able from the MSA office. Snowmobile and ATV safety course dates will be published in the Maine Snowmobiler and online as they become available. Safety begins with every one of us—on the trails and in the workshop. Al group of guys and gals, ranging from younger members to an old goat like me. We are all there for YOU. Hopefully, you will all have your club packets before you read this. If not, call me or the MSA office. We can help. I am looking for a club in the Western Region to host our January meeting. Please call me if your club would like to volunteer. Hosting would include providing supper and a meeting space for about 50 to 60 folks. My wife, Terri, and I are looking forward to joining your clubs for as many meetings as we can fit into our schedule. Please let me know if you are having any landowner functions, and share the dates, times, and locations of your monthly meetings. Get out and sell those SUPER RAFFLE tickets! If you need posters, sleds, or anything else, give me a call. We can help. And be ready to take a ride to Augusta for the MSA SNOWMOBILE & POWERSPORTS SHOW in October. See you there! Until next time, GOD BLESS. Jerry glasses, hearing protection, sturdy work boots, gloves and a dust mask when needed. Chain saw operators should also wear appropriate protective gear. Inspect chainsaws, trimmers and other equipment before use. Bring the tools, safety supplies and recovery gear needed for chang ing trail conditions. Watch for tripping haz ards, unstable ground and washouts while working or traveling on the trails. Always block and secure drags, groomers and snowmobiles before working underneath them. Never rely solely on a jack or hydraulic system. Pressurized hydraulic lines and elec trical systems can release unexpectedly and cause serious injury.

The newest thing coming is MSA Connect, which will begin rolling out very soon. This new platform will help clubs manage memberships and allow members to join or renew online. I have a lot of information to share and would love to have a Coastal Region meeting to bring everyone up to speed. Our next MSA Directors’ Meeting will be held Tuesday, September 15, hosted by the Crooked River Snowmobile Club at 665 Meadow Road in Casco. A BBQ dinner will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for $15, with the meeting beginning immediately afterward. We are currently monitoring trail access situations in the West Gardiner and Farmingdale areas, where local clubs are working hard to resolve issues, and we are keeping a close eye on a few additional concerns throughout the central region. If your club is interested in hosting a Central Region Directors Meeting, please feel free to reach out to me. We would love to rotate our meeting locations around the region to highlight and showcase as many of our local clubs as possible. Also, don’t forget that the next round of MTP grant applications are officially in! I will continue traveling throughout the Central Region to visit clubs and attend events whenever invited. Most importantly, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the hardworking volunteers who make snowmobiling successful across Maine. As always, feel free to reach out to me anytime with questions, ideas, or concerns—I am always here to help. W ell, my snowmobile friends, our season is getting closer. With warm days and cool nights, I’ve even seen a little color in the trees. The MSA has been a busy bunch this summer. The Golf Tournament was a great success, and Coastal Region clubs put together a booth for the Maine Moose Lottery drawing and did a great job. We had groomers on site, with people from a variety of clubs manning the booth. The Super Raffle Polaris sled and the Nitro trailer were also on display, and volunteers were busy selling raffle tickets.

I hope everyone has fared well. Now, it is time to start looking ahead—snowmobiling is on the horizon! Trail work and maintenance will soon fill up our schedules, so here we go. As many of you know, ongoing land transactions across the state continue to jeopardize certain trail segments. To all our dedicated members, please remember that our landowners are extremely precious to our sport. Respectfully submitted Judy Alright, enough about potatoes; let’s dis cuss what the area clubs have been up to this summer and what they have planned for the coming weeks. Even though there may not be snow on the ground, clubs are still busy rais ing money and working on projects. In July, the Fort Fairfield Snowmobile Club hosted its annual Potato Blossom Festival breakfast, the Big Valley Snowmobile Club hosted its cook out and pig roast, and the Caribou Snowmo bile Club hosted its annual Groomer Classic golf scramble. During August, the Portage Lakers served lunch during Lake Life Sum mer Days in Portage and the Washburn Trail Runners held their annual breakfast during the Washburn August Fest. Throughout the summer months, Linneus Sno Sports has been MEDUXNEKEAG RAMBLERS sc Meduxnekeag, ME farmers have roadside stands in our commu nities or attend local farmers’ markets, so be sure to get out there, purchase their products, thank them for supporting our sport, working with local clubs, and allowing trails to cross their properties. Without them, Maine wouldn’t have the vast and amazing trail system that we have. Oh, and if you’re a potato chip lover like I am, head over to your local store and pick up a bag of Fox Family Potato Chips or chips from the new Taste of Maine Potato Chip Company to support two great Aroostook County compa nies that support our sport.

clubhouse. Unfortunately, due to the lack of funding needed to complete the project, the club has made the difficult decision to put the project on hold until **2027**. We’re hoping that with some more fundraising and support from our community, we can raise enough money to make this dream become a reality. Our Main fundraiser of the year, the 2nd Annual MTR BASH in the GASH, will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during Colum bus Day weekend! Come join us for an afternoon/evening filled with: A delicious meal featuring BBQ pork and/or chicken with all the fixings Live music once again from the amazing BOOMERANG Band Gun and other great raffles Good food, good music, good people and a whole lot of fun! We are currently selling tickets for a .30-06 Weatherby Vanguard rifle, and (you do NOT have to be present to win!) Tickets can be purchased online through our Facebook page or from any of our active club members. We truly appreciate all the support we’ve received in the past and all the support we con tinue to receive. It means more to our club than we can put into words. We hope to see everyone out on October 10th and help us make the 2nd Annual MTR BASH in the GASH another great one! Let’s work together to make snowmobile sea son 2026–2027 a safe, fun filled and memorable winter! Thank you for supporting the Moosetown Riders! Summer Is Still Here… But We’re Already Thinking SNOW! Well, technically, the snow mobile season hasn’t started yet. But let’s be honest—does that really stop a snowmobiler from thinking about snow, trails, groomers, and where the heck they put their helmet last spring? Absolutely not! We may not have a ton to report just yet, but things are starting to happen behind the scenes, and the Portage Lakers are getting ready for another great season! Lake Life Weekend BBQ Was a Big Suc cess! Our Portage Lake Life Weekend BBQ was a great success! A huge THANK YOU goes out to Coffin’s General Store and Dean’s Motor Lodge for their generous donations and support. We truly appreciate businesses that continue to support our club and our commu nity. Another big thank-you goes to our club officers and volunteers who helped make the event fun and successful. It takes a great crew, as well as hungry people that love burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, chili and nachos, to pull these things together—and luckily, the Portage Lak ers have a pretty great crew! I’d like to take this opportunity to congratu late a few individuals in the Northern Region on awards they have received or positions to which they have been elected to. First, I’d like to congratulate Limestone SnoHawks Pres ident Christopher King and his wife, Kim berly for receiving the Town of Limestone’s Community Service Award. This dynamic duo PORTAGE LAKERS sc Portage Lake, ME hosting bingo nights. Regarding projects, the Moosetown Riders, St. Francis Sno-Angels, Meduxnekeag Ramblers, and Benedicta Snow Gang snowmobile clubs, have all been busy working on groomer garage and clubhouse projects. In the coming weeks, the Easton Snowmobile Club, Madawaska Snowmo bile Club, and Aroostook River Snowmobile Club will host fundraising events. In October, the Moosetown Riders will host their second annual Bash In The Gash, and for those of you who enjoy bowling, the Pleasant Ridge Riders will host their second annual bowling tournament. Be sure to check out all these clubs’ social media pages for up-to-date info. I apologize if I forgot to mention any clubs in the region that held an activity this summer. Also, be on the lookout for Super Raffle tick ets, as clubs throughout the state have started receiving them to sell. This is a great way to support a club because it keeps 50% of their tickets it sells.

Of course, there may have been a few burgers consumed in the name of “quality control.” We take that responsibility very seriously. Mark Your Calendars! Our first meeting of the season will be: Thursday, October 2 nd at 6:30 PM Portage Lakers Groomer Shed. Our November meeting will be: Thursday, November 5 th at 6:30 PM Portage Lakers Groomer Shed Beginning in December, our meetings w ill move back to Friday nights on the first Fri day of each month at 6:30 PM at the Groomer Shed. We welcome everyone who enjoys the trails and wants to help make our club better! Membership Time! We are currently work ing on our schedule of events for the upcoming season, so stay tuned! Tara will be sending out membership forms soon, so keep an eye out and JOIN OUR FUN CLUB! As always, you can visit portagelakers.org to join the club or make a donation. And remember: FUEL IS EXPENSIVE… WE NEED YOU! Seriously though, keeping our trails main tained, our groomers running, and our club active takes money—and every membership and donation makes a difference. Your support helps keep the Portage Lakers doing what we love: keeping the trails open and the snowmo bile community strong. We are excited to welcome Steve Cornell as our new Grant Writer! Steve and his wife, Jeanenne, are from upstate New York and also spend part of their time here in Portage. We are very happy that Steve decided to join our club officer lineup and put his skills to work for the Portage Lakers. Thank you, Steve, for jumping on board! We’re looking forward to all the good things ahead. New Members Are Always Welcome! Whether you’ve been riding for 40 years or your brand new to the sport, there is a place for you in the Portage Lakers Snowmobile Club. We need members, volunteers, trail sup porters, event helpers, and anyone willing to occasionally talk about snow when there isn’t a single snowflake in sight. In other words… we need snowmobilers! Follow us on Facebook — Portage Lakers for updates, events, trail information, and what ever else we manage to get ourselves into. Until then, enjoy the rest of summer, get those sleds tuned up, and start doing your snow dance! Think Snow! Club Secretary Tammy Kenney Ride. Support. Have Fun. Think Snow! works diligently and passionately to improve and maintain trails, not only during the winter months but also throughout the summer. They also promote snowmobiling and ATV riding in Limestone. This award was well-deserved for these two, a sentiment echoed by many who know them. Secondly, I would like to congratulate Dereck Grivois, President of Van Buren’s Gateway Snowmobile Club, for being elected to the MSA E-Board as the newest Northern Region Director. Congrats, Dereck; I look forward to working with you to support the Northern Region clubs. Lastly, regional vice presidents and direc tors are currently getting membership pack ets out to their area clubs, which means club membership renewals will be arriving in either your mailboxes or email inbox very soon. Be on the lookout for your renewal and submit it as quickly as you can, as every penny helps our clubs operate. Once again, I will host a regional information meeting in November, as I did last year. I’m confirming the date and time right now and will announce both in next month’s newsletter. I hope you all continue to enjoy the late summer, and please do your rain dances, as we all know our lawns and gardens could use a good watering. Nick Morrill
