Born in Chic530, Illinois, Dr. rlayes enjoys life as the middle i ter in a family offour children. Today, she keeps in close contact with family. especially nieces and nephews whomshe cares for as if they were her own children. Dr. rlayes received her Ph.D. in Biolo3ical & iences from orthwestern University and is an accomplished author ofseveral books. 6he has been the recipient ofcountless hono rs includill8 the Women Who Mean Business Award and the Livin3 Le3acy Award fromthe International Women's Council. 6he also serves on the 3ovemill8 boards of several 53encies and is ve ry active in tl1e community. Dr. liayes came to U6D in 1995 and has made innumerous contributions to the campus since her arrival. Particularly notewor– thy are her fund rai in3 efforts that have not only allowed for Lhe completion of the new main ntrance and parkin3 3ara3e, but also resulted in two major 3ifls that will soon be part of th University: the Jenny Crai3 Pavillion and the Joan B. Kroc In titute for Peace and Juslice. Dr. liayes was also an active participant in the or8anization of the Presidential Debate, he ld in 6hiley Theater in October 1996, and Lhe recent M6NBC Town tlall broadcast, in the same venue. 6he he lped to administer the Monsi3nor LB. E53en Memorial fund and works tire lessly to continue his Ethics Across Campus proj ect, initialed in 1996. Dr. liayes also hosts many formal events, such as the tlu3hes Career Achievement Awards that celebrate alumni accomplishments representative ofthe University's various academic disciplines and the Presidents Dinner that reco3nizes the 8ene rosity of U6D's distill8uished benefactors.
