The title ofAS Relations says it all. The main focus of my position on AS is to "relate" with all of the members of Associated Students. This is done by heading our monthly meetings, which gather us all together to discuss any issues and updates occurring in AS, as well as giving us a chance to spend time together once a month. Another way this position increases relations is by planning our two retreats, in the Spring and Win– ter. These serve to bringAS closer as an organization. My main job is to make sure thatAS members are work– ing well together and happy with their jobs. My main goal this year was to keep up our theme of Commu– nication and help AS to work well together as a team, and I think that this was accomplished. AS has been an important influence on my college years, and a wonderful experience. Through the hardwork of the 1995- 1996 Associated Students, I know that other members had this same experience, and were great examples to new undergraduates of the huge possibilities AS has to offer. AS is a great way to get involved on campus, and it is my hope that students take advantage of this opportunity.

All fathers have a precon– ceived notion about what the perfect son would be like. He'd love to play sports. He would be very intelligent. He'd be respectable. He'd be kind to everyone. He'd get a good job, be successful and raise a family . But first and foremost, the ideal son would to– tally and unconditionally worship his father . That is Eric Carroll, Vice- Presi– dent of Student Issues. Eric always had an extremely close relationship with his father. The key to having that kind of successful relationship is understanding and com– munication. These two things are es– sential elements in carrying out the duties that Eric had to take on this year in his A.S. position. The Vice-Presi– dent of Student Issues does exactly what the name implies. They find out what issues are on the students' mind and, with a committee, they address them. During the year, Eric was faced with several different issues, includ– ing parking and financial problems. since Eric is a person that has no prob– lems seeing things form many differ– ent angles, he was very successful in his job. "My goal is that next year's VP of Student Issues doesn't have to deal wthe same problems that I had to face," said Eric. Hardworking. Open– Minded. Caring. The perfect son. That is Eric Carroll.

He came to turn the tide From the twisted hand of fate Through the loveless night upheld This pillar ofHeaven's gate Though tired and tortured and tested for courage He mustered the strength that few can find This man of a thousand voices with his one heart, one soul one mind And so it was, they held him up the Gilded Image of an eagle against the wind But behind the face I found someone Not a hero, not a leader, just a friend It's funny how in times of need a person unexpectedly comes along to pull things through in such a way that makes any alternative possibilities unthinkable. The truth is it could have turned out another way. Bryan Walsh never planned to be the President of the Associated Students until the last minute of the '95 A.S. Elections. Up to that point Bryan had simply been a transfer student from a community college in Orange County who came to USD to get his degree in Psychology. Along the way he became involved in campus life by joining Campus Connec– tions and Lambda Chi Alpha, and by participating in class activities. It was one of the many- friends that Bryan had at USD who talked him into running on the eve of the election. The rest is history. As President, Bryan acts in the name of the students and is responsible for their welfare. He succeeds because of his dedication to us and because of his own resolution of character. A USD without Bryan Walsh? We can't imagine.
