The prophet stands elevated above all the other figu res, before the portico o f a temple. The dism ay of the holy messenger is most strikingly blended with the ex­ pression of his prophetic enthusiasm ; but at the sam e time he seem s full o f confidence inspired by his m ission. It is not the dismay of dastardly fear, it is horror m ixed with indignation at the con­ templation o f guilt.
