The American German Shepherd The first German Shepherd was shown at a U.S. dog show in 1907, and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America was founded in 1913. In 1917, when America entered World War I, all things German became “the enemy.” The American Kennel Club (AKC) changed the name of the breed to the Shepherd Dog and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America became the Shepherd Dog Club of America. In the U.K., the name of the breed was changed to the Alsatian. In 1931, the AKC restored the name to German Shepherd Dog. However, in the U.K., the breed was known as the Alsatian until 1974.
