Dr. Schanes Named toe., U.S. Post ?¥'; A University of San Diego professor of political science has been named director of the office of program planning in the U.S Department of Com- merce. Dr. Steven W. Schanes, 45, joins the growing contingency- of San Diegans in -the Nixon adminis tration. Sclianes was sworn in to the $36,000 a year post by Secretary of Commerce Maurice H. Stans. Schanes joined the USD faculty in Sep tember, 1966. He was appointed academic dean of the College for Men in December, 1966, but resigned in June, 1968, to return to teaching as professor in the USD political science department. An expert on pension funds, Schanes was a consultant to the California Highway Patrol and the State of Hawaii. He was vice president of a firm of con- sultants and actuaries in New York City before coming to USD. While academic ·dean, Schanes was instrumental in moves toward the unification of the College for Men and College for Women. He was a member of the joint committee on the future structure of the university.
