Start your cheesy visit to Monroe with a stop at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. Check out the original one-kettle factory where giant Swiss wheels were made. Local tour guides share local flavor, with many having backgrounds in cheesemaking and agriculture. In the early years, factories in the area churned out Limburger, Brick, Block Swiss, and Wheel Swiss. Today you’ll find more than 100 different kinds, including those of Hispanic, Greek, Dutch, and Danish origin. Monroe’s Chalet Cheese Cooperative stands as the only Limburger producing factory in the entire US (try it in a sandwich at Suisse Haus or Baumgartner’s Cheese Store – both downtown). Alp & Dell Cheese Store is a showcase for award-winning cheese (like World Champion Grand Cru) from the adjacent Emmi Roth factory. Maple Leaf Cheese Store also stocks local favorites, like Odyssey Feta from Klondike Cheese.

Visit Minhas Craft Brewery to stock up on beer and gear, and to see the giant collection of brewery memorabilia. Across the street is Minhas Distillery; tasteclassiccocktailsmade fromVodka, Tequila, Rum, and even Moonshine. The Minhas Family also invites you to dine at Minhas Kitchen and Winery. Another beer experience is Bullquarian Brewhouse, a two-barrel nano brewery downtown. Bullquarian often has live bands or accoustic entertainers.

For the best of the area’s music, visual, and performing arts – it’s Monroe Arts Center. Stop in and check out the gallery exhibits. MAC also hosts a popular outdoor summer concert series. Enjoy “wine with a view” from the tasting room, lawn or pavilion at Hawk’s Mill Winery. Having a vineyard next to Cadiz Springs State Rec Area (map on page 18) means there’s lots of green space to enjoy. If you’re looking to “embrace the green space” in the Monroe area, see the Trails Map (bike, ATV, UTV) on page 37. Monroe is home to 110 acres of parkland offering a variety of features: pool, skater’s ramps, disc golf, and the specially designed handicap accessible playground at the Rec Park. Stay awhile: motels, VRBO, B&B, camping at the Green County Fairgrounds, and even a unique farm-stay adventure with a friendly herd of Brown Swiss cows.

“We’ve successfully managed to bridge the convenience of online shopping to the in-person shopping experience. You can meet the owners, get to know the owners, but not leave your house.” And the money coming in made a difference. “We’re talking about some businesses that are a husband and wife, no other employees, so that money helped them pay rent and keep their doors open,” Nordby said. Not to mention, a way to reach a wider audience and engage new people. “We’ve got such a good depth of businesses here. Home goods, clothing, jewelry, toys, confectioneries, it’s a wonderful snapshot of the variety we have in Monroe.” The Art of Main Street Monroe Keeping a historic district thriving takes creative thinking. Main Street has a reputation statewide for using public art installations to drive traffic downtown. The tradition continues this year with a new mural and new summer art theme. “Creating murals is just as important as anything else we do,” Nordby said. “It’s been an investment. It’s about placemaking, community pride, and making sure that public art is accessible to everybody.” From a series of small “Alley Cats” painted in the alleys, to an Andy Warhol-inspired pop- art cow, the murals are playful and meaningful. A new mural planned for 2022 (underwritten by the Forrest and Mildred Kubly Fund through the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin) will be designed by local artists Kathy King and Lauren Burkey. Not only do the murals give local artists a chance to express themselves, Nordby said public art can also be used strategically for marketing. “We’ve had the murals placed appropriately to expand the field of the downtown, it’s not just the downtown Square, we have wonderful businesses two or three blocks off of it. We’ve placed murals where people least expect them.” Summer on the Square Art in downtown Monroe isn’t just on the buildings. For 12 years Main Street has taken it to the streets with a summer theme. From zoo animals to superheroes, local artists have carved or painted pieces to place along the sidewalks. “We always want to keep it family and children friendly,” Nordby said, adding “we never take it too seriously because we always want it to be fun.” This year’s theme is the cheesiest yet: “Cheese, Glorious Cheese.” Artists will paint 5-foot tall cheese wedges featuring scenes and elements iconic to Wisconsin. The theme coincides perfectly with the September return of the Cheese Days Festival after a 4-year hiatus.
It takes a creative spark to fire up a community. Downtown Monroe is on fire. When COVID-19 lockdowns hit, Main Street Monroe Executive Director Jordan Nordby knew he had one job: help the dozens of small businesses in the historic district survive. Two years after the first lockdown, the businesses are still there, and new ones opened. Leveraging the power of social media through a series of LIVE shopping nights, Main Street generated over $100,000 in sales for small businesses. “It’s been a lifesaver and phenomenal response for the last two years,” Nordby said. “The number of people who have shopped has blown past expectations.” The popular Facebook events also offered people at home a way to connect to their community. Small town charm. A warm and welcoming main street. A public
garden and a spring-fed artesian lake with the catch of the day. That’s the short list of what makes Monticello a great place to live, work, and visit.
The Monticello Chamber of Commerce works diligently to promote local businesses and organizations. Members meet monthly to network, share expertise, develop ideas to put the spotlight on businesses and community initiatives, and keep everyone connected with area events. The chamber actively partners with the Monticello Community Club, the school district, and other community organizations. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Montesian Gardens. Stroll through to enjoy this community garden which is planted and maintained by volunteers. Picnic tables, benches, and a gazebo add to the welcoming atmosphere. The Monticello Veterans Memorial is also located here. Lake Montesian offers scenic beauty and recreation for all seasons. Visit in early to mid-May to see the splendor of more than 100 crab apple trees blooming by the lake. All summer you’ll see people paddling

kayaks, and enjoying lakeside picnics. It’s the perfect spot for kids to learn how to cast a line from one of the fishing piers, and the winter freeze brings ice fishermen to the lake. Embrace the green space! The Badger State Trail and Sugar River State Trail intersect just east of Monticello. Uses include biking, hiking, snowmobiling. Learn more on page 37. GREEN CARES: FILLING THE CUPBOARDS
W. Coates Ave P P Embrace the space Lake Montesian & Gardens - Monticello WASHINGTON RD Washington St E. Highland Ave Kennedy St S. Main St 69 PARKING PIER Gazebo Montesian Garden Path
Just outside of Monticello, a small group of volunteers is making a big difference.
But it's a constant push to keep the shelves stocked. Green Cares relies entirely on the generosity of others and aid from federal and national organizations. Meat is purchased (at a very reduced price) from the USDA or Second Harvest. Local farmers with chickens bring in eggs. Perishables are donated by nearby grocery stores and bakeries. Local clubs, schools and churches hold food drives. As fast as the food comes in, it goes out. The need never goes away. Remarkably, the shelves are never empty. Voss and her husband have been there since the beginning, as board members and volunteers. The work has been some of the most fulfilling of her life. “There are some very heartwarming stories from the pantry, where someone actually didn’t have anything in their cupboards and they’ve been able to take home enough to feed their family.” Green Cares is always looking for more volunteers. Learn more by calling 608.938.4238 or emailing greencares@tds.net.
Green Cares Food Pantry opened in 2009 with a mission. Although several food pantries existed in the county, not everyone had access. Most food pantries operated during the day, making it hard for working people to get there. Green Cares is open evenings, mornings, and Saturdays. “People wanted another pantry with more hours and accessibility,” said Marcia Voss, who currently serves as board president. Filling that niche made Green Cares into the largest food pantry in the county, serving about 200 families a month, 600 individuals. About 60 people volunteer at the pantry on a regular basis, with another 100 filling in on special occasions. Volunteers drive trucks to pick up perishables, unload deliveries, and work the pantry hours. Then there’s record keeping, coordinating funding, and maintenance. The dedication and passion of the volunteers never seems to fade. There’s always someone to open the doors and distribute.

Albany’s first settlersweredrawn to the area by the Sugar River, which by the 1850’s was powering flour mills and wool carding machines. Today’s visitors enjoy the water for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing, as well as ice fishing in winter. Hot summer days get a little sweeter with cool float trips down the river. Several outfitters offer tube and canoe rentals and shuttle service. Albany is small in size but big on community pride. Many activities are centered on school and church. Community volunteers step up to make a difference with groups like the Fire Department and EMS, Lions Club, FFA Alumni, and Albany Community 1st. They organize events for the community like tractor shows, picnics, antique car shows, and annual holiday tree lighting by the banks of the river.

A recent ordinance change opened up designated streets within the village for use by all terrain and utility terrain vehicles. Operators must observe posted speed limits, as well as guidelines including but not limited to: drivers must be 16 or over with valid driver’s license, and passengers under 16 must wear head protection on the routes. Enjoy the view from one of Albany’s favorite scenic spots: Sugar River Overlook Park (have a seat on one of the benches across from the library), on the downtown bridge overlooking the Sugar River and dam, or from the vantage point of your kayak on the gentle river. Albany Wildlife Area is just west of the village. This wooded and marsh area is ideal for hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching. Just south of Albany is a small Amish community. You’ll find stores offering spices, bakery, quilting supplies, and handcrafted items. Proceeds from the annual quilt and consignment auction help to offset expenses for the Amish school. In addition to several sales rings, you can shop the bake sale and enjoy a scoop of freshly churned homemade ice cream with a slice of pie.

When it comes to embracing green space, Brodhead is truly the best place. Cast a line, ride the trails, paddle the river, and explore waterways less traveled. There are ample opportunities for your adventurous soul. Brodhead’s gift to locals and visitors is the exceptional Pearl Island Recreational Corridor. The map on page 44 will guide you to parking, landing piers, bridges, picnic spots, and parks. The 23-mile Sugar River Trail begins downtown at the trailhead. A short hike or bike ride leads the way to the scenic and historic Clarence Covered Bridge.
When it comes to community spirit, Brodhead Chamber of Commerce leads the way. New last year in honor of Brodhead Chamber’s 75th anniversary was Family Fest in June. Family Fest will be back this year withmusic, food, games for kids, and fireworks. It all happens at Putnam Park. Consider yourself invited for the annual Covered Bridge Days in August. There truly is something for everyone – with live music, tractor pulls and shows,

pontoon rides on the mill race, and the juried Wild Flower Art Festival. Nothing kicks off the holiday season better than Brodhead’s Fire and Ice Festival in early December. Watch as chainsaw artists turn big blocks of ice into sculptures. The festival features a lighted parade, fun contests for kids and adults, carriage rides, and holiday shopping of course. Downtown Brodhead is home to a thriving business district with plenty of spots to sip, savor, and shop. Stop inand say hi to Tracy, thenewowner at "The Bar" (formerly M&J's Bar). A circa 1880 factory has been converted to production space and a store for 608 The Factory – featuring home goods and gifts. There’s also 608 The Market – with handpicked vendors offering new and vintage home décor, repurposed furniture and more. The Brodhead Business Center (located in a recently renovated historic building) already has several businesses in place, with additional retail and office space for lease. Community gatherings often take place downtown at Veteran’s Park. A popular Sunday evening Twilight in the Park concert series offers up a variety of musical genres. A visit to Ten Eyck Orchard must be on your list for family fun. Starting in late summer, you'll find apples and honey and other seasonal favorites – like apple cider donuts and hand pies.

Decatur Dairy offers cut-to-order award-winning Brick, Havarti, and Muenster cheese. Steve Stettler is Wisconsin’s only Master Cheesemaker certified in curds, and you simply must try them! There are some tables inside, but if the weather is nice we recommend a picnic table in the front yard at the factory. It’s the perfect vantage point for savoring a melty grilled cheese hot from the griddle while watching trucks pull in to unload milk from the cheese cooperative’s patron farmer members.

‘you’re crazy, I’m 17, I haven’t even graduated yet, I know nothing about aviation, and you’re asking me to help design a museum.’” But Weeden saw her lack of aviation background as a strength. “He told me, ‘you can write this history in a way that people who know nothing about aviation can understand it.’” Shickles helped design the pivotal Pietenpol display. Brodhead has a long-standing connection with these early planes thanks to the Brodhead Pietenpol Association’s annual fly-in. Pietenpol is a homebuilt airplane designed in the late 1920s by Bernard Pietenpol. After the stock market crash, money was scarce but flying interest soared. Pietenpol was the first to make an automotive engine work in airplanes. His first models used Ford Model A engines. “An airplane like that was perfect,” Shickles said. “A lot of the materials used were pretty common, and cheap. The regular civilian person could build an airplane in their garage. It appeared in a magazine and became famous so they started selling blueprints.” Shickles tackled the daunting task of consolidating thousands of documents and photos in the Kelch archives to create an educational exhibit. She was soon engrossed in forgotten history. “I was reading letters that had never seen the light of day,” she said. “Long letters, like reading a different language. It was nice to translate that into more of a story format that people could read.” Early aviation history is Kelch Museum’s focus. From a rare Pietenpol Air Camper constructed by Bernard Pietenpol himself, to bi-planes dating back to aviation’s Golden Age, you won’t see a new plane. The museum opened July 2021 to acclaim, but Shickles said the work is far from done. As archivist, she’s working on cataloguing and organizing materials to create a research library open to the public. And she’s working toward her solo pilot’s license, a far cry from the girl who didn’t want to take a plane ride the first day. · Rec Hall, Game Room & Camp Store · Canoe, Kayak & Tube Rentals (shuttle available) · Sites with Electric & Water Hookup · On the Sugar River - Bring Your Fishing Pole! With no plans to study aviation in college, Shickles said flying will always be a passion. “I’ve worked on a lot of different airplanes and flown in a lot of them,” she said. “You don’t have to get a degree to fly a plane.” And if she had one piece of advice for the disinterested? “You should have gone on an airplane ride 5 years ago,” she laughed. “Flying airplanes? That sounded crazy to me! But keep an open mind.”
When Hannah Shickles first walked into the hangar at Kelch Aviation Museum, she had no interest in airplanes. “I don’t even think I knew the word aviation, I knew nothing,” Shickles laughed. Everything changed in a blink of an eye. “I remember walking into that hangar, it was just breathtaking,” Shickles said. “Walking into this massive, 1200 square feet hangar, it was like in a movie. It was gorgeous.” Loving a hangar is one thing. Shickles still wasn’t sold on flying. “My first day volunteering they had the 1932 Curtis 12 W out. The plane was already started. They said ‘Hannah, do you want to go for an airplane ride?’ I said ‘No.’ And they talked me into it. I was really, really nervous.” And then, it happened. “I sat down in that seat, and everything faded away. Everything. Any stresses from life, just completely melted away and something just clicked. And ever since then I’ve been fully immersed in aviation.” HANNAH TAKES FLIGHT
Follow Kelch Aviation Museum on Facebook and Instagram to see the video series "History With Hannah" by Hannah Shickles, Archivist and Events Coordinator. Episode One: The Untold Story of Bernard Pietenpol and Westy Farmer.
That was September 2020. Now, the 18-year-old UW Whitewater freshman is the museum’s archivist and event coordinator. Ironically, Shickles never planned to be in that hangar at all. As a high school senior, she needed a community service project for graduation. Her plans to work at the local retirement center fell through due to COVID restrictions. When a guidance counselor told her Kelch Aviation Museum needed volunteers, it was her only option. And the rest is history, literally. Shickles’ volunteer hours turned into a passion for aviation lore and the storied Pietenpol planes Kelch is known for. When her required hours were up, Shickles stuck around after Executive Director Pat Weeden offered her a job. “Pat asked me if I wanted to become an employee and I said yes, because I loved being in that environment,” she said. “I told him,

Wisconsin is known for June Dairy Month, but here in Green County we celebrate dairy every day! Every year young women from Green County are chosen to represent their respective communities by serving as agricultural ambassadors known as Dairy Queens. Of course it’s fun to be royal, but wearing the crown means advocating for agriculture, developing skills in public relations, and taking part in community service. Sometimes it also means eating ice cream! The Dairy Queen program is sponsored by the Green County Ag Chest.

Yodeling, alphorns, and fondue…Swiss heritage is all over the menu when you spend some time in New Glarus! From festivals to family reunions, to girlfriend getaways or “bike first so you can eat more cheese” weekends, New Glarus has everything you need. Dig in to the roots of the area with a visit to the Swiss Historical Village and Museum. Here you will discover why the original settler’s cabin on the museum grounds is so-well preserved despite being nearly 165 years old. Downtown New Glarus is everything a downtown should be! It’s easily walkable – with plenty of benches for relaxing – plus fun spots to shop. There’s on-trend apparel and accessories for all seasons, giftware, home and garden décor, bath and body, floral, toys and games, antiques, vintage, and jewelry. Eclectic, unusual, and sometimes a bit quirky… The Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum is a hidden gem. You’ve heard of the Smithsonian? Well this is the “Swissonian” with "collections of collections" including everything from a poison spy ring, to a Swiss monastery table dating back to the 1700’s, to a Lion of Lucerne with a mysterious “French connection.” Fun stuff for kids and families: New Glarus “Cow Parade,” meet the goats at Swissland Mini Golf, sit in the desks at the one-room school house at the Swiss Historical Village, bike the Sugar River Trail.
Fun stuff for adults: See where Spotted Cow beer is made, join friends for wine and wood-fired pizza (and live music on weekends) at Bailey’s Run Vineyard, sip a flight of beer on the front porch at Puempel’s Olde Tavern, enjoy burgers and live music on the back deck at Toffler’s Pub and Grill, and plan for a special occasion dinner complete with cocktails at Kristi’s Bistro Restaurant and Bar. You’ll definitely enjoy eating local.

Fondue and Swiss specialties are popular, but there’s also pizza and pasta, Limburger cheese sandwiches, soup served in bread bowls made at the local bakery, and dishes with Mexican and Southwestern influence.
