Green County 2022 Guide

Yodeling, alphorns, and fondue…Swiss heritage is all over the menu when you spend some time in New Glarus! From festivals to family reunions, to girlfriend getaways or “bike first so you can eat more cheese” weekends, New Glarus has everything you need. Dig in to the roots of the area with a visit to the Swiss Historical Village and Museum. Here you will discover why the original settler’s cabin on the museum grounds is so-well preserved despite being nearly 165 years old. Downtown New Glarus is everything a downtown should be! It’s easily walkable – with plenty of benches for relaxing – plus fun spots to shop. There’s on-trend apparel and accessories for all seasons, giftware, home and garden décor, bath and body, floral, toys and games, antiques, vintage, and jewelry. Eclectic, unusual, and sometimes a bit quirky… The Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum is a hidden gem. You’ve heard of the Smithsonian? Well this is the “Swissonian” with "collections of collections" including everything from a poison spy ring, to a Swiss monastery table dating back to the 1700’s, to a Lion of Lucerne with a mysterious “French connection.” Fun stuff for kids and families: New Glarus “Cow Parade,” meet the goats at Swissland Mini Golf, sit in the desks at the one-room school house at the Swiss Historical Village, bike the Sugar River Trail.

Fun stuff for adults: See where Spotted Cow beer is made, join friends for wine and wood-fired pizza (and live music on weekends) at Bailey’s Run Vineyard, sip a flight of beer on the front porch at Puempel’s Olde Tavern, enjoy burgers and live music on the back deck at Toffler’s Pub and Grill, and plan for a special occasion dinner complete with cocktails at Kristi’s Bistro Restaurant and Bar. You’ll definitely enjoy eating local.

Fondue and Swiss specialties are popular, but there’s also pizza and pasta, Limburger cheese sandwiches, soup served in bread bowls made at the local bakery, and dishes with Mexican and Southwestern influence.
