CHRISTKINDL BRINGS HOLIDAY MAGIC

An old-world tradition made its debut in New Glarus in 2021, and Christmas will never be the same again. The Christkindli Market, hosted by New Glarus Chamber of Commerce, is a perfect fit for this village founded by Swiss immigrants. Outdoor

Stauffacher expected 500 people. More than 1,500 showed up. “It was more popular than we anticipated,” she said. “We had a lot of both visitors and residents attend. So many kids and so many dogs. It was a great event.”

New Glarus hosts a variety of successful festivals every year in this tourist- friendly town. From “Polkafest” to “Beer, Bacon, and Cheese”, “Oktoberfest,” and “Blues, Brews, and Food Trucks,” they know how to plan for a crowd. The Chamber plans to add

Christkindli to the calendar as a yearly tradition. Stauffacher says it may take time to match the size of the crowds at other established events, but she’s expecting big things for Christkindli in 2022. “It was so popular this year, next year we expect to have more vendors,” she said. “Our visitors loved it, residents loved it, retailers were happy. It was a really positive experience for the community. We were surprised at how many people came out, even in the cold weather.” New Glarus Christkindli 2022 vendor applications are available at www.swisstown.com/events. Preference is given to local vendors, but anybody selling Christmas gifts, decorations, and or food can apply.

a major part in developing the event. “It’s a European tradition that seemed like it would fit really well in New Glarus,” she said. Traditionally held during the Advent season, Christkindli (translated Christ child) markets feature cozy stalls of handmade holiday decorations, food, drink, and a festive atmosphere. Stauffacher and volunteers wanted to bring that magic to downtown New Glarus. Market vendors set up in small chalet stalls for “that old-world feel.” From holidays gifts and toys to decorations and clothing, there was something for everyone. Not to mention food stands with bratwurst, bakery, and drinks. Plus, alphorn players performed Christmas carols, there were free horse and sleigh rides, live carolers entertained visitors, and Santa himself was the guest of honor. THE CHALET OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE whimsical, magical, eclectic! Time to visit
