It is almost redundant to preface this report with the words “this year has not been without its challenges” … for, in addition to dealing with damage and insurance claims from two severe storms during summer 2016–17 and overseeing changes on the Club’s management, staffing and general contractual fronts, your Board has also undertaken significant maintenance work required of our facilities and equipment, including a planned program of progressive upgrades of our gaming machines. Much of this work had been held over from previous years, due to financial or other constraints. Many of these tasks have this year been resolutely addressed, as the costs in doing so were judged far less than the longer- term costs of continued deferment. Our sporting sections have not been good performers this year: the Sailing Section has been dormant for some time, and the Fishing Section, by the second half of 2017 unable to achieve a quorum and deliver on the formal administrative responsibilities required of it by our Constitution, is now in a similar state of suspension. Until some commitment to the comparitively straightforward tasks of administering and operating such Sections translates into co-ordinated, active efforts by Members interested in supporting and promoting their activities, these sections must, sadly, remain in limbo. I will have more to say on the question of ‘commitment’ in general later in this report. In the first half of this year, Member Garry Clayphan took with gusto the reins of the LSChampagne Cruise, handed on by Past Rear-Commodore David Cameron. A great time was had by the dozen or more Club vessels enjoying the quiet delights of our Southern Bay waterways between 27th May and 2nd June and Gaye and I want to particularly thank Garry and Denise for their excellent stewardship; everyone greatly enjoyed themselves.

Conversations among Members suggest more such outings should be on the Club’s agenda – not necessarily long cruises but more modest events on weekends and long weekends, unencumbered by excessive numbers of participants or school holiday responsibilities. This is certainly achievable but only if Members become involved and help take responsibility for the management and planning. Garry will certainly welcome a hand, if we can prevail upon him to reprise his cruise captaincy again in 2018! Efforts will be made to re-establish the Bay Outings Committee and any Member wanting to participate is urged to give serious consideration to their involvement – and then get in touch with the 2018 Board and Flag Officers to help make it happen. On a similarly positive note, I am pleased to announce that we are in discussions with the organisers of the 2020 Contender National Titles for them to be held at the Little Ship Club. This event was last held at LSC in 1994 and the Contenders are eager to return to our venue. LSC Members will be kept informed of developments as negotiations progress during 2018 and we are confident that the proposed return of this event to the waters off our One Mile home will be a sound boating and business legacy for future LSC administrations and Members in the years ahead. Many friendly discussions have also been held with a number of other clubs and organisations around the Bay during the year, and I was proud to accept the traditional invitation to represent our Club at the official opening of the RQYS season on 9th September. Together with Director Bill Canfield, I also attended SYC’s similar festivities a week later at Southport. Earlier in the year, Rear-Commodore Matt Tesch represented the LSC at Karragarra Yacht Club’s annual sail- past/blessing events on 18th March.

The Rear-Commodore also came good, for ANZAC Day 2017, on a project which had been unrealised the year before due to his hospitalisation with pneumonia, and our Club has now tangibly reaffirmed its proud commitment to the memory and legacy of service personnel. On 25th April, following its inclusion in the blessing at the conclusion of the march-past, an AWM-approved sapling, directly descended from the original Gallipoli Lone Pine, was planted in the foreshore lawns of our Club between the RAN Bofors gun and the flagpole. In a very moving and well-attended little ceremony under bright sunny skies, this very special piece of living history joined the trove of our Club’s rich heritage. Norma Canfield’s puzzlement at the large gap in the polished granite tops of her renovated kitchen benches has by now (surely?) been assuaged by Bill, who arranged for the slab to be so beautifully engraved before its presentation to our Club. The stone will be post-mounted adjacent to the tree for all to savour in years to come. Vice-Commodore Chris Goodhew resigned from his Board and Flag roles from 1st September 2017 due to ill health and we wish him well for his treatment. In the ensuing adjustment of Board and Flag roles, Matt Tesch has been promoted to A/Vice-Commodore and Bill Canfield to A/Rear-Commodore until the Annual General Meeting. Also, from 5th September Mr John Cross, a well-known business identity in the hospitality industry and boating fraternity was appointed to the Board. As I reported last year, the constraints of our now quite-dated Constitution continue to impede the Club’s efforts to accommodate, adapt and evolve in response to changing circumstances in the 21st Century.

Some progress has been made but the modernising of such a traditionally- framed body of work is a painstaking and time-consuming affair indeed. Nor is this a ‘new’ experience for our Club; keen-eyed Members might recall the words printed on page 56 of LSC’s little history book Blue Sky White Star : “Another major task was begun in 1981 by Commodore Maschmedt, that being the updating and re-drafting of the Club Constitution. This is such a large job, that at the time of compiling this history [published 1986] , the task is still underway.” A key task for the incoming Board should be the identification (and employment, if required) of suitably- qualified person/s with a view to having a draft of the fully-revised and updated Constitution available for membership consultation by Easter 2018. Following a thorough legal assessment the updated, proposed Constitution should then be placed before Members at a Special General Meeting for their approval and its implementation before June 2018. Our Club is indeed fortunate to have such a group of talented directors from across many areas of business and industry and, with their willing commitment of expertise and time, the Club continues to be well-handled for the long-term benefits of Members. It is pleasing to note that a profit, although small, was delivered this year which indicates that we are holding our own. Of course, a more substantial outcome would have been welcome but the result is nevertheless a solid one, especially given the afflictions on our trading conditions due to weather (of which, more later in this report). Honorary Treasurer Greg Leggett has introduced a number of procedures that have significantly tightened fiscal policy and which have enhanced our Club’s operations.

Process and policy changes of this ilk can take a little while to work their way through all the interconnected systems but the benefits – in more stringent record-keeping and clearer accountabilities – are already bearing fruit. Bill Canfield’s name has figured already in my report but it is his honorary role as Director (Building & Grounds) for which our Club has much to be grateful this year. Evidence of this, although possibly unnoticed by Members, was the supply of a new hot water system for our bar (free of charge), upgraded urinals in the gents’ facilities, considerable financial savings on product purchased for maintenance and various other items donated by Canfield Plumbing. Bill has also made vehicles available for the transport of equipment to and from the mainland and has been instrumental in making our 2017 working bees a success. Two working bees have been held this year, enabling much useful work to be accomplished around our Club, from ‘mundane’ items like fixing handles, hinges and fenders to repairing tiles and trimming and removing tree branches. As usual, it is the same reliable cadre of willing Members who have stepped up to the plate each time – and in the many weeks between times – to achieve such great results. Working bees are a club’s greatest asset in building camaraderie and social interaction among members and it is a pity that we do not see more faces attending. Maybe 2017–18 will prove more beneficial … On behalf of LSC Members I especially pay tribute to and acknowledge Bill’s contributions and his staunch support for our Club. (Thank-you, also, to Norma and the family for allowing us to have as much of his time as he gave!) He will be missed as he is not renominating for a Board position in the 2017–18 year.

Staff under the guidance of our new General Manager Anthony Carter have provided excellent service and we must not forget the effort made by our executive chef Cameron Tobin, who has lifted the quality of culinary delights to a level well in excess of expectation. These efforts do not go unnoticed by Members, guests and casual patrons alike. Since Cameron commenced with us I have not received any complaints about the food quality or presentation. This has also been reflected by the increasing patronage of our bistro operations and the almost-universally positive reviews posted on our Club’s Facebook page and circulating on social media more widely. On behalf of your Board I thank all involved in the successful delivery of our Club’s food and beverage services over the past year; it’s been a great team effort throughout a number of challenges over the months and your keeping our Members, guests and visitors ‘well-fed and watered’ has been key to our results. As I write this, Anthony, Cam and the team have, apparently seamlessly, managed the interruption to the ‘F part’ of our F&B operations occasioned by the temporary shut- down needed to enable the floor of the kitchen and servery to be re-laid. And, co-ordinated with the A/Vice- Commodore’s marketing skills, our transport and tourism partners, as well as our membership base and the wider social media world, have been kept fully informed of progress. Another good outcome, this year, has been the long-anticipated and eagerly- awaited installation of a ‘proper’ coffee machine in the bistro servery. This has proven a boon, not only for bistro diners and guests but also for casual visitors and one of the long- term goals is to also tap into the morning commuter market of caffeine-deprived pedestrians on their way to catch the Flyer next door.

Whilst ashore, our grounds and gardens, although lessened in foliage cover following the storms’ cleanup, continue to attract enquiries from families, the corporate sector, prospective brides and grooms, and other community and boating organisations about hosting functions and events – and the ever-popular putt-putt golf, quoits and ‘beach cricket’ remain stalwart favourites. Moreover, the Club’s successful grant application for additional furniture for the premises will see the installation of more formal seating in the southwest corner of the main Flags lounge, three more sunlounges for the lawns, outdoor lounges and individual chairs for the bistro area. We also have in train a grant application for a ‘Combi oven’ to further improve the catering capability of our kitchen. Afloat, I am buoyed by the number of Members who have applied through the Club to the Royal Navy for a Warrant and permission to fly the Blue Ensign (Defaced). These applications take considerable time to process and when issued to vessels are something to be proud of and in keeping with the traditions of the Naval Auxiliary Patrol and the Little Ship Club. There are specific criteria for permission to be granted to be awarded the Warrant and applications may be lodged with the Hon. Secretary for processing. Our own burgee continues to appear on more vessels around the Bay and I encourage members to ‘fly the flag’ whenever cruising in our waters. On which, I remind Members that it is a requirement, when on the Club pontoon or our swing moorings, your vessel is wearing our Club burgee. We also have a request lodged with Marine Safety Queensland for an allocation of another three 15m swing moorings in the One Mile basin. Recent correspondence from MSQ indicates that we are on the short list but none in that size is currently available.

Discussions with MSQ continue for a full and accurate audit of moorings, including confirmation of correct location and occupation by the registered mooring owners, in accord with relevant legislation. In conclusion, and although I have already referred to many of my Board colleagues in this report, it would be remiss of me here to not formally acknowledge the sheer damn hard work and passionate commitment demonstrated by what – to coin a Nelsonian phrase – could only be described as this ‘happy band of brothers’ … those very few people who have consistently shouldered loads left by others who have not stepped forward in our shared interest. Gaye, Chris, Matt, Bill, Greg and Col: for your many hundreds of hours given freely and willingly to the service of our Club over the years, on behalf of all LSC Members, I thank you for all you have done, for what we have built together on the foundations left by those who have gone before, and for what will yet be possible with those still to come. Such dedication cannot be expected to continue, nor can the membership expect so few individuals to carry such a workload – in some cases impacting on their own family, recreational and business time. Traditionally, there once were committees carrying out many of these tasks. It would not be unreasonable for me to indicate that Members can expect a tap on the shoulder and be ‘pressed ganged’ onto a committee by future administrations. Our demographic continues to age and it is time for the next generation to stand up and protect the heritage of the Little Ship Club as did our forefathers. Vice-Commodore’s report

I have a number of people to thank for their extraordinary efforts in the past year (and before) in both their service to our Club and their guidance and mentoring in my role as Board member and Flag Officer: not least our Commodore, Vice-Commodore and Hon.Secretary, in particular, for their camaraderie and custodianship which has been insightful and educational. Special thanks also to Bill Canfield for putting us in touch with the very talented Leah Falcocchio, whose skills in Adobe Illustrator and commitment of time exceeded my own capacities to deliver our Club a fresh new suite of master artwork files for our signature formal crest. It was a delight to meet the doyen of our Club’s naval heritage, Alan Early, when I represented LSC at Karragarra Yacht Club’s annual sail-past and fleet blessing on 18th March, and it was a true privilege to be able to exercise my experience of that event in the conduct of our own ‘Commodore’s-at-Home’ annual events on Good Friday 15th April … even if the VHF protocols (certain PCs will know who I mean) were more ‘honoured in the breach than the observance’ on the day. to step in as Acting Secretary of the Fishing Section, attending weigh-ins and writing the section annual report, before stepping down in September to concentrate on treatment of a chronic medical condition. I have served for the best part of three continuous terms from the AGM of October 2014. This follows a much earlier stint in the service of Boards led by Past Commodores Paul Davy and Mal Parker. While the Constitution describes no specific V-C duties other than Director and assisting the Commodore, I have particularly assisted the respective Boards with Constitutional matters and ICT advice. During this year, I was also obliged

Ongoing monitoring of our Club’s marketing budget has reduced spend this year while maintaining a presence across a range of channels, from select wedding features to more daily metrics such as scorecards at Point Lookout Bowls Club; opportunities continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis in the context of our Club’s overall marketing strategy, goals and finances. Six ‘Mailchimp’ e-communications have been delivered to Members in the past 12 months, the backroom rigour required to maintain a ‘clean’ database mailing list for every transmission being more than repaid by the positive feedback each has received. LSC’s social media rankings continue to improve with (as at 10th October) 1,358 ‘likes’ (up 32% on last year) and 3,864 ‘visits’ (up 61% on last year) of/to our Facebook page, respectively, which has also consistently maintained our 4.6/5 stars reviews rating as a hospitality venue; typical ‘post reach’ engagement figures have achieved between 1,000–3,000 people per event. Matthew Tesch Rear-Commodore Director (Communications) 2008 and 2010 and further commend this recommendation to the incoming Board. Chris Goodhew Vice-Commodore I can assure the current and incoming Board that I remain available for consultation as an ordinary Member, and hope to be back to full service next year. In the meantime, Sue and I will be attending the Club as treatment and time permit. I have also encouraged the Board to seek interested members to serve on a committee dedicated to the task of further modernising the Constitution beyond the amendments voted in

Hon. Secretary’s report

My year as Honorary Sectary draws to a close and as I reflect on the performance of our Club it certainly has turned a corner. Our OLGR, ASIC, RCC, AUSTRAC, ATO and other state and federal legislative requirements are all in order and up-to-date: all Board meeting minutes have been signed and filed, and further documentation regarding Board members has been lodged with the ATO, OLGR and ASIC. All that ‘alphabet soup’ will surely be familiar to Members who operate their own businesses! management, and liaison with local councils and various state and federal government agencies/departments. Although not particularly ‘difficult’ of itself, the role requires a very careful eye for detail, correct due process and diligent reporting. I have acted as Honorary Treasurer for the Little Ship Club (Queensland Squadron) for a little over a year now. Whilst it has been a challenging first year in the position I have enjoyed it immensely and believe that as a Club we have achieved much. Among our major achievements this year have been: 1. A welcome return to profitability; 2. Quality meals in our restaurant after securing the talents of a high- calibre chef in Cam Tobin; 3. Continued improvement in the Hackett and, more recently, the engagement of Anthony Carter, an accomplished club manager with 26 years’ experience; 4. Major repairs to club facilities The role of Company Secretary comprises a vast spectrum of responsibilities, organisational management of the Club including during the tenure of Julie and Craig

It is not a job – nor an honorary responsibility – for the ‘faint-hearted’ but nonetheless is vital to achieve and maintain the probity and good corporate standing of an organisation. The three-stage strategy commenced under Commodore Lyle Watkins is now complete, having stabilised the Club after rebuilding the membership base and controlling management processes. Our records are now all electronic with minimum hard copies stored at the Club. There is still a way to go to build a complete database and to properly itemise all files and that will have to be an ongoing work-in-progress for future administrations. This may well need to be an area where a line item is allocated in the budget for a resource to be employed to complete the total program. I thank all Board members for their generous assistance during my term. Gaye Morcombe Director (Honorary Secretary) 5. The introduction of an upgrade program for other Club facilities including gaming machines, the kitchen and bar equipment; and 6. Upgrades in controls and procedures within the Club. We look forward to continuing this program this year and increasing the services and amenities available to Members. I have reviewed the audit which was conducted by Club-appointed auditors Mobbs & Co, and after consultation with them I accept the Audit Report for the 2016–17 trading period. I encourage you to take time to read the Audit Report (pages FS.1–FS.24 in this document) prior to the AGM and I am more than prepared to take questions on the day. Thank-you to all those Members who attended our 2017 working bees. Our facility is ageing and in need of considerable TLC. While large-scale repairs to infrastructure are (rightly) beyond our membership capability, less intensive jobs can and should be carried out from time to time. We have achieved much on a limited budget thanks to the contribution of equipment and services, free-of-charge from various Member-owned businesses; thanks, everyone! I need to acknowledge Hugh and Gordon Bletchley (Brisbane Wholesale Hardware) for their kind donation of a hot water system for our bar and also Charles Ainsworth (Manly Mower Service) who continues to support the Club with repairs to our garden equipment and for his donation of a reconditioned rotary mower.

Last but not least, thank-you to those stalwarts, the same faces, the same pairs of hands who always make an effort to attend and help when required. On behalf of the Board and Members, thank-you all, very much. Members need to take on board the Commodore’s remarks in his 7th October email regarding the choice to be made between being an active part of ‘a club of shared interests’ or a bunch of people wanting to enjoy visiting a ‘destination venue’ when it suits them. Engaging with the first delivers the benefits of the second; it doesn’t work the other way round. My tenure as a Director is ending this year; it has been a privilege to serve and I look forward to supporting our Club as Member in the future. Bill Canfield Director (Building & Grounds)

House & Social report

We have not had any additional functions this year other than the normal festivities associated with traditional events. That said, the most important event of the year from a club perspective has been the LSChampagne Cruise organised and managed by Garry Clayphan. With his little band of helpers Garry put together an exceptional cruise following on from his predecessor David Cameron. Corporate support was excellent as was the participation by Members. Everyone will be pleased to know that Garry has agreed to run next year’s cruise and, by consent, participant numbers will be capped to keep it both manageable and comfortable for all. I must begin by thanking Rear- (now A/Vice-) Commodore Matt Tesch for his continued support and ongoing help with the membership portfolio, deputising in my stead in early 2017, and helping actively maintain our database for periodic ‘Mailchimp’ communications. Membership continues to fluctuate with our ageing demographic now retiring from boating activities and active involvement in our Club, but I can report we have had significant signings from new applications – particularly since the start of the 2017–18 membership year in July.

Once dates are set, destinations are finalised and details released, you will need to put your hand up and secure a place very quickly. A fee for a ‘no show’ (making a booking and then cancelling) will be added to the cruise’s charitable donations contribution pool in 2018. Notably, during this year’s cruise, the ‘fines department’ flourished during the few days in company; together with the additional raffles held, a substantial bank was achieved and, as traditional, a donation to VMR was the overall outcome of the event. Well done to everyone; see you on the LSChampagne Cruise next year! From observations there is no doubt that our executive chef Cam Tobin with his excellent menu, skill and presentation has been a major contributor to the influx of visitors and new membership alike. Our membership database has been intensively and repeatedly interrogated and purged of outdated/incorrect information, a process begun by Karen Davy and maintained this year. Communications Member communications remains a topic under active consideration by your Board, with a range of options evaluated; all have their pros and cons but each always returns to the vexed matter of active membership engagement and support to maintain timely content of interest and relevance. A quarterly, rather than monthly, publication has been proposed but, although ostensibly freeing-up 75% of the editor’s year, it not only peaks the production effort higher (with 90 days of pre- and post- topics to cover), it also lacks ‘real-time newsworthiness’. A smaller page size (e.g. A5 rather than A4) would appear to lessen the workload but pieces would need to be shorter, smaller and more tightly edited and advertiser space would also reduce; a similar design effort is needed even if the page size is 50% smaller. More success has been had in 2017 with the periodic ‘Mailchimp’ email communications to Members; investigations into evolving the current ‘plain text’ template format into something more colourful remain ongoing. But, as the Commodore noted in the most recent such message, it’s not sustainable to always expect the same few pairs of hands to be doing the lion’s share of the work.

Material collated (e.g. QRBC updates supplied by Club representatives), r eported on (e.g. MSQ NOTAMs, etc) or original contributions (e.g. trip reports, recipe notes, etc) by myself appeared in all 13 editions and the item count (124 pieces) represented fully 59% of the total content output. Modest success was obtained with the monthly cover photo competition, with 10 Member images used across 61% of editions – but none at all received after the ninth. More tellingly, just eight original contributions were written by Members and, as 50% of these were from Board members, that means only four of 210 pieces (just 1.9%) came from the general membership. Many Members continue to lament the lack of a regular monthly eNews. The responsibility for this is individual, circumstantial and shared by all: first, because I set the bar too high with its high-calibre design, second because I did so when I had much more time to tackle each month’s compilation and, third, because of the overwhelming lack of support and contributions from Members to filling its content. Everyone – by all accounts – enjoyed receiving and reading each edition, but scant indeed was the active input from the membership base, as this simple survey shows. Across 13 editions a total of 210 items (reports, articles, news topics or image collations) was counted. Board/Flag reports appeared in all 13, comprising 21.4% of the content total. Section or Club manager reports appeared in only three-quarters of the editions, for a total of 11% of the overall content.
