Paul was the fourth overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. Playing for the New Orleans Hornets he scored 1,258 points for a per-game-average of 16.1. He also had an average of 5.1 rebounds per game and 7.8 assists per game. These numbers helped the Hornets go from an 18–64 season the previous year to a 38–44 season in Paul’s rookie season (a season that was played in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina). Paul’s performance in the 2005–2006 NBA season earned him a spot on the All-Rookie team and Rookie of the Year honors.
