Delegates, assisted by experts, from twenty-five countries of the world, participate actively in the work of the Commission. The rapidly increasing use of welded construction and its inevitable growing pains, such as the spectacular accidents caused by brittle fracture , have encouraged the development of methods of testing and inspection ; this development has led to collaboration between experts in inspection, between fabricators, steel makers and suppliers of other metals and inspectors of material and also collaboration at an international level with a vie\v to achieving objective readings of inspection apparatus, to making uniform the processes of measurement or scanning, to making available standards or reference documents for the diagnosis of defects in welded work, etc. From the beginning, friendly personal relations were established between the delegates on the Commission, in which a genuine team spirit exists. These friendly relations have resulted in the network of close and happy cooperation which is at present characteristic of the Commission and from which all its activity benefits. To organise its work more effectively, the Commission has set up \rnrking groups for the study of special problems, such as, for instance, the Collection of Reference Radiographs, the nomenclature in use in ultrasonic inspection, an illustrated work of reference on destructive tests, etc. In r 952, it appeared necessary to divide the activity of the Commission among Sub-Commissions, the titles of which are at present as follows (r) : Group Leader : L .
