IIW History 1948-1958

- 158 -

Mention h as principally been made above of the liaison between the IIW and ISO/TC 44 which is, of course, the ISO Committee principally concerned with the IIW's work. But it should be recalled that the IIW h as collaborated with other Committees and especially with ISO/TC II (Unfication of Boiler Codes); details of this collaboration are given in the report of Commission X I of the IIW. In add ition, Commission VII has t aken action to obtain other contributions in reply to questions raised and h as also circulated a certain amount of info rmation among the various technical Commissions of the IIW; such was the case, fo r instance, with regard to t he utilisation of image quality indicators for the radio– graphic inspection of welded assemblies (Commission V Testing, Measurement and Control of Welds of the IIW). In general, Commission VII makes a point of keeping the Chairmen of the IIvV Commissions informed, in so far as is necessa ry and possible, of the progress and results of the work of I SO Committees which could affect activities within the scope of their Commissions, and, vice-versa, of sifting from II\V \Nork a ny elements which might contribute t o the investigations undertaken within I SO Committees; a n example of this is the effect of the work of I SO/TC 17 (Steel) on impact t est s on keyhole or V-notch t estpieces. 4. WORK IN HAND AND FUTURE PROGRAMME. It will be apparent from what has already b een said that the work of Com– mission VII is automatically influenced by the development of the t echnical activities of the IIW on the one hand, and by the matters dealt \Nith by inter– national st a ndardising bodies on the other, in particular the I SO but also the IEC and perhaps, in the future, institutions which undertake standa rdisation work, such as the E uropean Coal and Steel Community. Certain questions are being studied within the II\V or the ISO which arise from problems encountered or from the use, as regards standardisation, of results which have led t o resolu– tions or proposals being put forward . Mention niay be made in this connexion, apart from what has already been said above, of matters relating to filler rods and electrodes for building up , the hydrogen content in weld metal, non– destructive inspection, the qualification of welders, etc. 5. CONCLUSIONS . As stated above, the p urpose of Commission VII of the IIW is not t o prepare international st anda rds, since I SO is responsible for this work, which it carries out following its own relatively slow but very strict procedure. But the Com– mission carefully examines the t echnical problems raised by standardisation matters a nd thus contributes effectively t o the progress of the corresponding work within I SO. The Commission 's task is rather t o ensure a fl ow of t wo-way traffic - on the one h and, of information and problems from ISO to the t echnical Commissions of the IIW particula rly affected and, on the other, of information or results of use for international standardisati on from the IIW Commissions to the I SO. It oft en h appens that a proposal, made by the IIvV as a r esult of special investigations, constitutes a working document for I SO where it gives rise to discussions which , in their turn, result in fres h investigation t o clarify certain important points and t o allovv the nature of the problems to be more firml y grasped . On the whole, it may be said that, while the prerogatives of the I SO as regards standardisation a re scrupulously respected, the collaboration of international technical organisa– tions such as the IIvV, whose purpose is not to st a ndardise, nevertheless assists greatl y in carrying out a task rightly considered t o be particularly difficult a nd delicat e. This method of wo rk makes effective cooperation possible.
