COMMISSION XII

SPECIAL ARC WELDING PROCESSES

M . KOMERG Germany.

l. CONSTITUTION.

Commission XII is the most recently established of the technical commissions of the IIW, the Governing Council having decided to set it up in 1954; it was constituted during the following year, a preliminary meeting being held in Paris before the first official meeting which took place on the occasion of the annual assembly at Zurich in September 1955· From the start, Mr. M. KoMERS (Ger– many) has been Chairman of the Commission.

2 . TERMS OF REFERENCE AND ORGANISATION.

The Commission's programme of work covers all special electric arc weldin g processes - welding under covering of flux powder, welding with continuous co\ ered or bare electrodes, with or without gas shielding, welding using substan– tially non-fusible electrodes, with or without gas shielding, and special processes such as stud welding, etc. In view of the importance of the processes listed above, it may be asked why the IIvV did not at first decide to set up a special Commission to study them. In this connexion and in regard to the decision taken in 1954, reference should be made to the chapter on Commission II (Arc vVelding). A study of the reports of the discussions which took place on this latter Commission between 1950 and 1954 shows that, from the point of view of the work to be undertaken, the dis– tinction to be made between arc welding with covered electrodes on the one hand, and the other arc welding processes on the other, has not always been thought
