53
cent of the solid waste generated in Addis Ababa is collected and
treated at the city’s two treatment plants at Kaliti and Kotebe.
Only five per cent of the collected solid waste is recycled.
The final effluent out of the treatment plants at Kaliti and
Kotebe is high in coliforms, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and
phosphorus, causing algal bloom in the receiving water body
(Belachew 2010).
MEDICAL WASTE
A study by EPA (2009) found that 430.7 tons of contagious
waste is generated by the 29 hospitals located in Addis Ababa.
