This seminar provides an introduction to jurisprudence and the philosophy of law. In the first
part of the course, we will study various approaches to the traditional issues of analytic
jurisprudence, such as the concept of law, the definition of a valid legal system, and the
possibility of determinate legal truth. In the second part of the course, we will read selections
from contemporary scholars, jurists, and judicial opinions that set forth and illustrate contrasting
views of the role of a judge, the nature of adjudication, the meaning of the rule of law, and the
justifiability of judicial review under democratic principles. Course grade will be based on a
paper and class participation. Not offered 2012-2013
