This course explores the role of the law in the resolution of bioethical issues in medical practice
and medical research and how such decisions translate into public policy. Topics for discussion
will include: the constitutional and statutory basis for medical decision-making; physician-
assisted suicide; the legal and ethical issues in human genetics and the new reproductive
technologies; defining death and organ transplantation; the regulation of human research; and the
cloning and stem cell debate. Grade based on: Final paper: 80% Presentation of Paper 10 %
Attendance and participation: 10%
