W
hen Caleb Watmore
started at Dubbo’s
brand new JB Home store in
September, he was listening
to a lot of underground
dance and trap. “I’m a big
hardstyle head,” the DJ and
producer says. “Its your
uptempo, 150bpm, really hard
dance music – you’ve got
your Melbourne bounce and
house which is sitting around
128bpm, but this goes one
step further.” He still loves his
dance, but listening to some
of the other wares in-store
prompted new appreciation
for a number of existing acts.
“Empire of the Sun’s new
aways the guy in the group to
download new songs, put them
on my iPod, and … supply
the music for pre-drinks”)
but it was a mate’s interest
in a hardware deal that got
him into DJing and creating
his own music. “I thought,
‘Why not?’ I played guitar,
and I thought 'I’ve got that
knowledge behind me, so why
not give it a shot?' It’s good to
have that theory behind you
as well, because you can hear
the songs that are in key, you
can break down a track, which
helps with the production
side of things because you’re
not just winging it, you’re got
a little bit of a plan.” Having
supported Tigerlily's solo tour
and Rudimental and Peking
Duk's Vanfest stint during
their various visits to Dubbo,
Caleb’s now taken a step back
to re-discover what it was he
loved about DJing in the first
place. “To build the passion for
it again,” he explains. “It’s easy
to lose yourself to that whole
popularity thing, finding gigs,
travelling. It turns more into a
task rather than a passion that
you once had.” Keep an eye out
for Caleb coming to a Vanfest,
Defqon or pre-drinks near you
soon.

their songs on the radio

to hear them and I thought it

didn’t know that backstory!”
He was also taken with
SAFIA’s debut album: “I was
pretty impressed – his voice
is unreal,” he says. “SAFIA
