The
Nitty-Gritty
When a Chicago Blackhawks player goes
down hard on the ice, team physician
Michael Terry (left) is usually there to see
it. Terry goes to most of the NHL team’s
games, sitting behind the bench ready to
offer his help. Along with on-the-scene
diagnoses of concussions and treatment
of cuts, Terry, an orthopedic surgeon,
performs operations on the players.
The years of training sports physicians
undergo lets them perform a range of health services for athletes.
For Terry, one of those procedures is
arthroscopic
surgery.
For another team doctor on the field or in the locker room, it
might mean popping a dislocated joint back into place. While
all sports medicine professionals offer care, both preventive and
after an injury, the specifics of what each does defines their job.
Here’s a more detailed look at just some of those specific tasks.
